Simley’s Jake Short entered the Cheesehead Invitational in Kaukauna, Wis., as the top-ranked 145-pound wrestler in the nation.
He left the tournament Saturday, Jan. 5, as the top 152-pounder.
The senior, moving up a weight class to make a run at Apple Valley freshman Mark Hall, won the championship at 152 with a 3-1 victory over Brian Murphy of Glenbard North (Ill.). A showdown with Hall, a freshman who entered the tournament top-ranked in the country at 152, never materialized.
Murphy, ranked No. 3, defeated Hall 3-2 in overtime in the semifinals. The loss snapped Hall’s 90-match winning streak dating to the 2010-11 season.
Short was hoping for a chance to atone for a 3-0 loss to Hall at the 2011 Minnesota Christmas tournament in the only meeting between the two.
“I wanted to wrestle Hall badly, but he got beat by someone else first,” Short said by phone. “I can’t do anything about that. I wrestled the best guy, and it happened to be Murphy.”
Hall, 27-1 this season, rebounded to place third with a 3-0 victory over Beau Breske of Hartford Union (Wis.).
Short, 27-0 and selected the tournament’s outstanding wrestler, won the 145 crown last year. He also was selected the MVP of last month’s Christmas tournament and went 6-0 at the Clash Duals.
Short said he plans to finish out the season at 152 pounds.
