Championships can be very sweet.

Twinsburg senior Michael Baker’s 182-pound wrestling championship on Friday night at the 51st annual Brecksville Holiday Tournament was especially sweet – like a Georgia peach.

A defending OHSAA champion (171), Baker became the first Twinsburg Tiger in history to win a BHT title when he rallied from 5-3 deficit to overtake defending Georgia state champion Brooks Climmons (H.M. @ 182) 9-6.

Billed as the featured match of the finals, and therefore saved until the end of the meet, the No. 1 seed Baker-No. 2 seed Climmons bout lived up to the hype.

“That was an awesome last minute in that match,” Hall of Fame Twinsburg coach Dave Mariola said. “They were both equal all the way up to that last minute and it came down to who wanted it more.”

And while Baker won four decisions to reach the championship bout, Climmons breezed into the final with a bye, a pin, a tech fall and a major decision.

“They are both great wrestlers. They are both state champs,” Mariola said. “That kid (Climmons) is ranked really high in the south, but Michael just wasn’t going to give up.”

With the match tied at 5-5 with 0:30 left, Baker took a single-leg shot and Climmons stepped aside and appeared in position for a takedown. Baker countered when he continued to spin around the junior from Pope, Ga., and got the 2-point takedown.
