What a month it?s been for New Oxford?s Jordan Conaway (No. 6 @ 112).* He started by winning the first state wrestling title in school history.* Then he beat the top 112-pound wrestler in the nation.
Then, of all things, his future college canceled its wrestling program.
The official stunner though came shortly after:
Penn State?s Cael Sanderson called.
?I just about dropped the phone,? said Dave Conaway, Jordan?s father and coach. ?When I answered, Jordan was on the phone with some guy from Nebraska. I said, ?Cut it off! Cut if off!? I?ve got Cael Sanderson!
?Cripe, why would you want to fly there and back for something that might not be as good??
And now Jordan Conaway is ready join the Penn State Nittany Lions ? the recently-crowned national champions. He?s ready to learn under Sanderson, arguably the nation?s greatest wrestler who turned Penn State into a title-winner in only two seasons.
To recap, Conaway just went from winning that PIAA title to beating Evan Silver (No. 3 @ 112), the nation?s top 112-pounder at the Dapper Dan Classic in Pittsburgh ? to exchanging Liberty University wrestling for Penn State.
What a month.
?It?s been a whirlwind, like we were stuck in a tornado,? Dave Conaway said. ?Bad things are hitting you first and then, the next thing you know, good things are hitting you ??
Things really got wild when Liberty, also a Division I program, announced it was reclassifying its wrestling program to a club sport two weeks ago.
And the Conaway phones began burning up the very next day.
The list included coaches from Virginia, Virginia Tech, Michigan, Minnesota, American and Nebraska.
