For 2011 PIAA Championships ? Opportunity Lost For Some Title Hopefuls and many other topics visit

This season?s PIAA Wrestling Championships will be remembered as a tournament where opportunity was lost. This area had three wrestlers looking to repeat as champions and none did.

There is no sugar-coating it. This was a disappointing tournament.

The losses derailed Charleroi?s Cody Wiercioch (No. 4 @ 160), South Fayette?s Nick Carr (H.M. @ 160) and Canon-McMillan?s Connor Schram (No. 5 @ 112) chances of winning a gold medal. Worse for Schram and Wiercioch, it meant an opportunity to become a four-time state champion was lost.

Only nine wrestlers in the history of the PIAA Championships have managed to do that. The last was Jeremy Hunter of McGuffey, who captured his fourth in 1993. Jim Conklin (1940-43) of Waynesburg, who was the first to do it, and Cary Kolat (1989-92) of Jefferson-Morgan, also are on that list.

That it?s been so long since it?s happened shows how difficult this tournament has become and what an accomplishment it is for any wrestler.
