For No. 9 Clovis Wins 9th Team Title over No. 11 Bakersfield and many other topics visit

There?s no such thing as an easy opponent at the CIF State Wrestling Championships, coaches are fond of saying, but some certainly are more difficult than others.

Never was that more apparent than when four (No.11) Bakersfield High wrestlers ran into four semifinal opponents ranked No. 1 in the state by The California Wrestler website Saturday at Rabobank Arena. All four lost, and though two rebounded to take third place, that draw might have done in the Drillers in a record-setting team race.

?This meet is so good every draw looks bad,? BHS coach Andy Varner said. ?But it was tough. You?ve just got to be better than your draw.

?They could have just given up or conceded, but they didn?t. They fought, and they fought back hard.?

Ultimately, (No. 9) Clovis won its ninth state title with 186 points to the Drillers? 177. Off in the distance, third-place Selma finished with 100.
