When you are expected to win state wrestling team championships the day before the three-day tournament ends, you know you?ve got something epic going on in your program. Eventually, though, you are going to run out of amazing performances.
Yet the (No. 5) Graham wrestling juggernaut set sail for virgin waters yet again Friday night, nearly doing the unheard of and nearly topping the 200-point plateau after just two days. The Falcons advanced eight wrestlers to tonight?s championship finals and ended with a total of 194.5 points on the team scoreboard.
Another state Division II title is assured, of course, as the closest competitor is over 100 points behind (Oak Harbor, 92.5). It is the 11th straight state title and 13th overall for the Falcons, who are now driving head long into a second decade of dominance. They?ll look to add to their total of 56 individual state champions in tonight?s 5:30 p.m. finals.
Graham is also on its way to its second-highest team point total ever. The all-time all-division state record of 282, set by the Falcons in 2009, may be out of reach. But the school?s next highest total, 223 last year, is definitely in the crosshairs.
?There?s nothing better than when the team wins the state title on Friday night,? said Graham coach Jeff Jordan, who has never coached a team that didn?t win a state championship in his 10 years as Graham?s head man. ?It?s a relief right now. The guys are so team oriented. So when the team reaches its goal, it is nice. We can relax and eat together as a team tonight and let off a little steam, then come back tomorrow and get after those individual titles.
?Eight in the finals, I?m very happy with that,? he continued. ?The goal was seven, and it would have been nice to have all nine, but eight is very impressive.?
