You know that feeling of disappointment when you've been anticipating a specific matchup between two individual wrestlers or teams at a dual meet tournament ... only to have it not happen because things didn't go as expected in the bracket. That's not an issue at the third annual Journeymen/Asics Sprawl & Brawl, to be held Sunday at West Gym at Binghamton University in Vestal, New York. InterMat's Mark Palmer talks to event organizer Frank Popolizio about the event and what fans can look forward to at this year's Sprawl & Brawl.

Upset time
It hasn’t taken long for the upset bug to strike college wrestling. No surprise there. But what happens in November means little. It’s what happens in March that counts.

Two national champions, Ohio State’s Mike Pucillo (he won at 184 in 2008) and Missouri’s Mark Ellis (winner at 285 in 2009) were beaten. Pucillo, a runner-up last season at 184, fell 5-2 to Dustin Kilgore of Kent State in the finals of the Oklahoma Gold Tournament at Brockport, N.Y.

Ellis finished fourth in the Central Missouri Open. He lost 4-2 in the semis to Dustin Finn of Central Oklahoma and then 2-1 in the tiebreaker to teammate Dom Bradley in the consolation semis. Oklahoma State’s Jared Rosholt won the weight.

Bradley is no slouch, having won the most recent Junior World title in freestyle.

Here’s a look at the winners of last weekend’s top tourneys:

Ohio State still hasn't released a projected line-up for this one, so I'm guessing at 125 and 133.

125 Triggas dec McDonald
133 Fisk Mdec Harrington/C. Palmer
141 Humphrey dec Ciasulli
149 Palmer Mdec at least Tanen
157 Nemec toss up Bilodeau
165 Sponseller toss up Galante
174 Rella toss up Hamlin
184 Pucillo dec Craig
197 Kennedy dec Magrum
285 Rey dec Morrison

The way I see it, tOSU is solid in 4 matches with at least one bonus (Palmer) among them. Lehigh is solid in 3 matches with one bonus (Fisk) among them.

That means it comes down to the three toss ups in the middle (157, 165 and 174). Assuming Lehigh wins 2 of those three (they're wrestling really well with two tough duals under their belts) it's one of those duals where it all comes down to bonus points.

The Buckeyes win this one, but it'll be really close.

Biggest early season dual thus far (and will probably be the biggest one we get until Iowa v. Iowa State).

125: Frank Perrelli dec James Knox 3-0 Cornell
133: Steve Bell dec Mike Grey 3-3
141: Alex Krom dec Kyle Dake 6-3 Maryland (Much as it kills me to predict)
149: Jon Kohler dec Corey Manson (One toss up to Maryland) 9-3 Maryland
157: DJ Meagher dec Kyle John (And one to Cornell. Meagher impressed me last year at National Duals anyway) 9-6 Cornell
165: Josh Asper dec John Basting 9-9
174: Mike Letts dec Mack Lewnes (Going to keep riding the Letts bandwagon) 12-9 Maryland
184: Steve Bosak dec Corey Peltier 12-12
197: Hudson Taylor dec Cam Simaz 15-12 Maryland
285: Josh Arnone dec Pat Gilmore 15-15

So I have it coming out to a tie.

Lots of very close match ups here in breaking this down. Could see as many as seven of these ten matches possibly going the other way than how I predicted them.

Kerber's injury may be big in swinging the dual. Had he been here I'd have picked him to beat Asper, which thereby would have swung the dual to Cornell.

Nov. 17, 2009

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia 197-pound senior Brent Jones, who scored a key major decision in one of the Cavaliers’ three dual victories in Sunday’s ACC Challenge, has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week.

Jones swept his three matches at 197 pounds at the Challenge, which was hosted by North Carolina. He now has 85 victories in his career as he moved into an 11th-place tie with Derek Capanna (1985, 1987-89) on the all-time UVa wins ledger. Jones led the now-19th ranked Cavaliers as they defeated Bucknell 20-13, Gardner-Webb 50-0 and 16th-ranked American 20-19.

Jones also added to his school pins record, recording his 36th career fall against Gardner-Webb's Travis Porter. In his final match of the day, Jones recorded a key major decision against American’s Kenneth Clessas. The bonus point from that match was crucial as UVa won by a point against American – the Cavaliers’ first-ever win over a ranked team. Jones also scored a 9-7 decision vs. Bucknell’s Joe McMullan, helping Virginia to the team win in that match.

ACC teams return to action Friday night with a pair of non-conference matches, as 10th-ranked Maryland visits Cornell and NC State is home against Utah Valley State.

The NC State Open is set for Saturday, where ACC member Duke will also be among the teams competing. Maryland will remain in Ithaca, N.Y., for the Body Bar Invitational, while some Terrapin wrestlers will compete in the East Stroudsburg (Pa.) Open. Tournament wrestling is also on the docket for Virginia Tech, which will compete in the Navy Classic.

Duke will take part in Sunday’s Keystone Classic at Philadelphia.

141 is a tough weight in every conference -ACC ,Big 10,Big 12,MAC, but the PAC-10 has every 141 ranked in the top 25 . Drouin barely beat Adinas ? the other day and he is the top seed and adinas the last seed .

Also,Marion is not ranked and LeClere is back in for Iowa .??

EVANSTON, Ill. – Stanford wrestling opens the 2009-10 season with three wins at the Northwestern Duals, Saturday, at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill. The Cardinal edged Purdue, 19-16, in its first dual before dismantling host Northwestern, 27-6. Stanford concluded the day with a 22-9 win over Northern Iowa.

Three Cardinal wrestlers went undefeated as redshirt juniors Justin Paulsen and Zack Giesen and redshirt sophomore Nick Amuchastegui all recorded 3-0 records. Five other Stanford wrestler’s posted 2-1 records – senior Jake Johnson, junior Dylan rush, redshirt freshman Mike Kent and true freshmen Bret Baumbach and Ryan Mango.

On the evening, UW won six matches while NWC, an NJCAA school from Powell, Wyo., took four bouts in the UniWyo Sports Complex. However, the Cowboys were on the plus side in three of four lopsided matches and those bonus points are what ultimately propelled them to victory in the season-opening dual for both teams.
Despite Wyoming’s team win, Cowboy head coach Mark Branch was not satisfied with his team’s showing in front of the home crowd.
“Although we did have a couple guys who performed okay, I expect a certain tenacity and attitude from my team and I did not see that tonight,” Branch said. “No one wrestled to the best of their ability. I could make excuses for them but that will not help us in the long run. The particular make-up of our team on any given night does not matter. The bottom line is that we have to go out and perform.”
Returning All-American and No. 5-ranked Joe LeBlanc led the way for the ‘Pokes with a win by fall at 184 pounds. The Cowboy sophomore pinned NWC’s Jarrett Baker at 4:04 in the second period after rolling to a commanding 12-2 lead. LeBlanc racked up two takedowns, two nearfalls and a reversal before putting his opponent on his back.
Another UW sophomore, No. 17 ranked Michael Martinez, got his team a big win at 125 pounds. Martinez used four takedowns, three nearfalls and a reversal to earn a technical fall win, 18-3, over Phillip Grout.
Tyler Davis, also a Wyoming sophomore, wrestled at 165 pounds and worked hard for a 9-1 major decision victory over Zach Oppenheimer.
The Cowboys also got wins from redshirt freshman Kasey Garnhart at 133 pounds, senior Cory VomBaur (141) and junior heavyweight Matthew McLaughlin.
Four Wyoming wrestlers competed for the first time for their team in a dual match: Garnhart, sophomore Mikah Kadera (157), McLaughlin and redshirt freshman Colton Zier (149).
UW sophomores Alfonso Hernandez (197), Dallas Hintz (174) and Kadera each dropped one-point decisions to the Trappers.
“Give credit to Northwest tonight,” Branch continued. “They had everything to gain, were more aggressive and wrestled with more heart. We are going to have to change our approach if we expect to improve during the Cowboy Open.”
On Saturday, Nov. 14, UW will host the 37th annual Cowboy Open tournament, all day in War Memorial Fieldhouse. The event is sponsored by UniWyo Federal Credit Union.
Nearly 20 collegiate teams are expected to bring competitors and among NCAA DI schools bringing full squads are three Western Wrestling Conference rivals of the ‘Pokes: Air Force, Northern Colorado and Utah Valley. Event officials are anticipating nearly 400 individuals will compete.
Tournament tickets are good for the entire day and are $10 for adults, $5 for youth 18 and younger. UW students can watch the event free with a valid ID.
Cowboy Open results can be followed on TrackWrestling.com and matches are scheduled to begin on 10 mats at 9 a.m., running all day through the finals on Saturday evening.
Defending event champions for the Cowboys are Shane Onufer (Elite, 174 pounds) and L.J. Helbig (Amateur, 184 pounds). UW also had three runner-up finishes and had five student-athletes place third at the tournament in 2008.

I really like this matchup regardless of who your team is, this is my personal non-biased opinion(wink, wink)
125 Big edge to Sanders as Triggas...

I really like this matchup regardless of who your team is, this is my personal non-biased opinion(wink, wink)
125 Big edge to Sanders as Triggas doesn't look like he'll even be the starter I'm giving a major to the Goph's no matter the competitor
0-4
133 Paddock will have a nice year but as a fan of wrestling I hope Ness breaks through this year and wins the whole thing seems like an A+ person
0-8
141 Humphrey no doubter but I think it will stay to a decision
3-8
149 Palmer, I don't care who wrestles for Minny but I'll be generous and say decision
6-8
157 Key Match of the dual and I give the edge to Nemec. As HSlers both were highly reguarded but Nemec is the better folkstyler
9-8
165 Marquee matchup but I love Schlatter and hope he brings home a title this year but at his best he only wins by 7
9-11
174 Rella takes this one Gophers are better here than in the past but Rella will AA this year and takes this match
12-11
184 I am giving benefit to Gophers and calling this only a major (due to Gold open results, he doesn't look right)
16-11
197 Bucks will be significantly better at 97 this year with Magrum but I'll give the gophers this one but this is a see-saw-er
16-14
HWT Morrison and Berhow will be close but the coin landed on tails so I'm going with Berhow in a dec.
16-17 Gophers
Really there are 4 key matches to decide this dual @ 57,74,97 and HWT so we'll have to wait and see how it pans out. Whomever grabs the bonus and wins the swing matches will decide this one (as it does in every great matchup)
Too bad Schlatter wouldn't have stayed at home and be a 57 for the home-boys

This year, with most of their firepower coming back from last year, the Chipps should be locked, loaded, and ready to continue their run as one of the premiere programs in the country.

"We have very high expectations for this season. We want our athletes and program to continue to improve in every aspect. Our conference continues to improve and challenge us therefore, with our conference schedule and our non-conference competitions, we expect to be seasoned and do very well at the NCAA tournament both individually and as a team," said coach Tom Borelli

Mike Miller is back at 174lbs and will look to become CMU's first NCAA Champ in nearly a decade. Miller finished 2nd at last year's NCAA tournament, losing to Steve Luke of Michigan who graduated, and is a consensus #1 in all preseason polls.

"We have had a national finalist for the past two seasons and are proud to have represented Michigan college wrestling in the national spotlight. We are excited that Mike has received this pre-season recognition," said Borelli. "We also know a lot of hard work goes into the process of being prepared to win a NCAA individual championship. Mike is certainly no stranger to this work or preparation and we are confident that he will do everything in his power to accomplish this lofty goal"

The Chipps have one other All-American coming back this year in sophomore Scotti Sentes, who finished 7th at 125lbs last year as a true freshman. This year Sentes will be going up to 133 and swapping with senior Conor Beebe, who was a National Qualifier at 133 last year and has been at 133 his whole career to this point.

"Conor has always felt that he was better suited to wrestle at 125 but because of team needs he has wrestled at 133. Scotti Sentes has outgrown 125 and Conor wanted to compete at what he feels is his more natural weight during his senior season. I feel this change will benefit them both individually and consequently our team," said Borelli.
Check back to cmuchippewas.com for a photo gallery from today's match, as well as a recap of CMU's performance at the Michigan State Open on Sunday.
MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan opened the dual meet portion of its schedule with a 32-6 win over Chattanooga Sunday at Rose Center.

The 13th-ranked Chippewas won nine of 10 individual bouts, with the lone loss being a void at 141 pounds. CMU scored bonus points in three matches and allowed a total of just two takedowns and three reversals in the victory.

Matt Steintrager built a 5-0 lead on takedowns in the first and second period against Demetrius Johnson at 125 pounds, but Johnson reversed Steintrager late in the second period, escaped to open the third and took Steintrager down on the edge of the mat to tie the score at 5-5. Steintrager scored an escape with one minute remaining for the decisive point.

Scotti Sentes was victorious in his debut at 133 pounds, pinning Josh Statum at the 4:49 mark. After a scoreless first period, Sentes quickly worked Statum to his back in the second period and scored three back points before eventually sticking the pin.

UTC scored its only team points when CMU voided the 141-pound match.

Tony D'Alie scored a takedown 10 seconds into his 149-pound match with Dean Pavlou, and he added three more takedowns and built a riding time advantage of 2:02 in a 10-2 major decision at 149 pounds.

In the only matchup of ranked opponents, Steve Brown earned a 6-5 decision over Joey Knox at 157 pounds. Brown, ranked eighth nationally, scored a pair of first-period takedowns and added a reversal in the second period of take control of the match. Knox, ranked No. 16 nationally, tallied an escape early in the third period and a takedown in the closing seconds for the final margin.

Tyler Grayson added three team points for the Chippewas with an 8-3 decision at 165 pounds. Grayson scored a takedown in each period while building a riding time advantage of 2:03.

Mike Miller, the nation's top-ranked 174-pounder, opened his season with a 3-1 decision over Chattanooga's Jake Young. Miller and Young traded escapes before Miller scored the decisive takedown in the third period.

Redshirt freshman Ben Bennett earned his first career victory at 184 pounds, claiming a 5-4 decision over UTC's Jason McCroskey. Bennett scored the only takedown of the bout in the first period, but the pair traded reversals before Bennett added an escape late in the opening period. A pair of escapes accounted for the rest of the scoring.

Eric Simaz scored an escape and a takedown in the second period on his way to a 4-0 victory at 197 pounds. Simaz held a riding time advantage of 2:28 in the match.

Jarod Trice capped the win with an 11-1 major decision at heavyweight. Trice scored four takedowns in the victory and added riding time.
Just wondering if it possible too have a forum for updated coverage of any and all wrestling available on TV and Web streaming? Maybe I'm stating it wrong, just one click on your web site that is continually updated for all coverage.

Interesting stuff.

125: Andrew Long is back wrestling with a nice performance, majoring Krutsinger in the finals.

133: Cody garcia, a D-2 national champ, has a nice performance winning the weight with a decision over Nate Moore in the finals. The guy is legit, he beat Jordan Oliver last year.

141: Unfortunately, Gallick Med FFT'd in the Semi's, or else he would have met Joe Slaton in the Finals. Slaton ended up winning 14-7.

149: Mueller won in a relatively empty weight.

157: Interesting results, with ISU's back up, SOrenson, beating Derek St. John in the semis, and then Sorenson beat Brett Robbins in the Finals, after Nate Carr Med FFT'd.

165: Jon Reader dominated his way through a weight without many names in it.

174: Duke Burke has a nice tournament and wins the thing with consecutive 3-1 decisions over Iowa's back up, Lofthouse, and his own back up, Spangler.

184: Grant Gambrall upsets Jerome Ward 6-2 in the Finals. Ward did beat the guy who beat him in wrestle offs, Joe Curran, in the semis.

197: Varner dominates teh bracket with 4 pins and an 8-0 major.

HWT: Zabriskie wins in relatively uneventful fashion, but he doesn't appear to have given up a point.

I hadn't seen this before. It's freestyle, but still good to see. Schlatter gets a couple nice TDs and an exposure on Howe, while never really being in danger of being scored on. Also, he doesn't really look smaller than Howe. I always thought Howe was on the larger end of the spectrum of 165s.

Looks like Oklahoma State is going to run away with this thing.

VERY intersting quarterfinal matchup at 184 - Chris Perry vs. Deron Winn. Who do you have? I think Winn beats him in a close match...
Ellis/Rosholt/Bradley at heavyweight, wow

With Escobedo graduating and only Brooks left at 125 Goldman will be forced to wrestle Wright next year and the kid will be in the top 25 at 125 by year's end .
He'll place in the big 10 next year and will be a fixture in IU's line up for the next 4 years .
Brandon is as good a light weight as I've ever seen come out of Indiana -that includes Esco and Tshirt and Humphries .
Not quite as good as Esco was in high school but close . I'll bet he chose IU because they said he could wrestle right away . Goldman probably sent JoeD to his house .

Wyoming Wrestling to Host Two Weekend Events
The Cowboys will dual Northwest College on Friday night and then host the Cowboy Open on Saturday.

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Nov. 12, 2009) – The quest for the 2010 postseason begins this weekend for the University of Wyoming Cowboy wrestling team, as they open their season by hosting two home events. Wyoming will dual the Northwest College Trappers on Friday, Nov. 13 and then host the 37th annual Cowboy Open tournament, presented by UniWyo Federal Credit Union, on Saturday, Nov. 14.
“It will be nice to start the season from the comforts of home,” second-year UW head coach Mark Branch stated. “Since we will wrestle a lot of matches this weekend, it will be good not to have to deal with outside things such as travel issues.
“With the multiple events in Laramie this weekend, high school and UW, I am hopeful that fans from all over the state of Wyoming will get a chance to watch some of their home-grown talent on the wrestling mat.
“Our focus as a team will be to execute in areas that we have stressed in preseason. We need to wrestle with confidence, not be conservative and not be hesitant.”
The Northwest College dual will begin at 5 p.m. in the UniWyo Sports Complex. Ticket prices are $5 for adults and $3 for kids 18 and younger, while UW students are free with a valid ID. In a special promotion, a ticket for the Cowboy Basketball game against South Dakota State will gain the holder free admission to the wrestling dual, while an adult wrestling ticket will earn fans admission to basketball later Friday night.
It is the first time the two teams will have met in a dual match, however both squads were represented at NW College’s tournament last Saturday and there were some head-to-head match-ups between the two teams. Wyoming was 3-2 in those matches, featuring mainly back-ups and freshmen who will redshirt.
Tentatively scheduled to wrestle in the dual for the Cowboys are all four returning NCAA qualifiers from last season: sophomore All-American Joe LeBlanc (184), sophomore Michael Martinez (125), senior Cory VomBaur (141) and sophomore Shane Onufer (165). Three Wyoming natives could also see mat time on Friday night: redshirt freshman Kasey Garnhart (Ten Sleep) at 133 pounds, redshirt freshman Colton Zier (Basin) at 149 and sophomore Mikah Kadera (Sheridan) at 157.
Seven starters, including three NJCAA All-Americans, return this season for Northwest College head wrestling coach Jim Zeigler. The Trappers will be trying for their 16th consecutive finish in the national top-10. Northwest College placed 10th at the national NJCAA tournament in 2009.
Last year’s NJCAA national runner-up at heavyweight, Landon Harris, compiled an impressive 32-3 record on the mat in 2009-10. Joining Harris are returning All-Americans Saul Guerrero (133) and McCade Ford (141). Both placed in the top eight at last year’s junior college nationals.
A long-time Wyoming tradition will then continue on Saturday, Nov. 14, when UW will hold the 37th annual Cowboy Open tournament, all day in War Memorial Fieldhouse.
UW also had three runner-up finishes and had five student-athletes place third at the tournament in 2008.
http://www.cyclones.com/ViewArticle....B_OEM_ID=10700
AMES, Iowa – The No. 2 Iowa State wrestling team was firing on all cylinders Thursday night in Hilton Coliseum. ISU handled South Dakota State 43-3 for the first dual win of Cyclone head coach Kevin Jackson’s career.

ISU made an impact with its offense in front of a home crowd of 2,528. The Cyclones recorded 29 takedowns to South Dakota State’s four. ISU also counted heavily on back points in the contest, scoring six three-point nearfalls and seven two-point nearfalls.

“We came in as the more heralded team and we needed to wrestle like it,” Jackson said. “We have a lot of things to learn and only a couple of guys have really taken over at their weight class. The rest will be determined by how we wrestle at the Harold Nichols meet this weekend and then at Omaha.”

Making the first dual start of his career at 184 pounds, senior Joe Curran kicked off the 2009-10 Cyclone wrestling campaign in impressive fashion. The Elk Point, S.D. native scored a technical fall over South Dakota State’s David Michaud by a score of 17-2 (5:52). Curran notched five takedowns in the match.

“Joe has been making the most connections in training and that is why he was out there tonight,” Jackson said. “He and Jerome Ward have a battle going and both have done a good job. Joe went out tonight and went after his man from the start. That is what we are looking for this season.”

Two Iowa Staters had pins on their mind Thursday night. Heavyweight David Zabriskie struck first for the Cyclones with a 4:17 stick of SDSU’s Jeremy Swier. The fifth-ranked senior had built a 14-3 lead before recording the fall.

Two-time All-American junior Jon Reader added six team points to the Cyclone effort with his pin of the Jacks' Weston Blasius at 165 pounds. Reader notched the fall in the first period in 1:42.

“The matches are the fun part,” Reader said. “We have a veteran team and all of us were here this summer training. It was great to get out and wrestle somebody outside of the wrestling room.”

Senior Cyclone Duke Burk proved too much to handle for South Dakota State’s Joe Rasmussen at 174 pounds. Burk ran the first period score to 14-1 before finishing off his Jackrabbit opponent with a takedown 21 seconds into the second period for the technical fall, 16-1 (3:21).

No. 1-ranked 197-pounder Jake Varner started off his senior campaign with bonus points over 11th-ranked Tyler Sorenson of SDSU. In the premier match of the night, ISU’s Varner controlled the bout with a 13-4 major decision.

Second-ranked Cyclone 141-pounder Nick Gallick handled his SDSU opponent, Dustin Walraven, by major decision, 14-2. Fellow ISU senior Mitch Mueller followed with a strong 12-5 decision of the Jackrabbits’ Nick Hagar.

The son of former Cyclone three-time NCAA champion Nate Carr scored bonus points for ISU. Nate Carr, Jr. notched a major decision over Nick Flynn of South Dakota State by a score of 9-1.

Senior Iowa Stater Nick Fanthorpe picked up a win by forfeit at 133 pounds.

Making the first start of his Cyclone career, true freshman Dallas Collier of Aiea, Hawai’i was dropped by SDSU’s Aaron Pickrel by decision, 9-3.

ISU hits the mat Saturday for the Harold Nichols/Cyclone Open at the Lied Recreation Center. Action begins at 10 a.m.

Iowa State wrestling coach Kevin Jackson believes returning NCAA champion, 197-pounder Jake Varner, came back from February's World Championships in Denmark stronger, wiser and even better.

That could be bad news for Varner's foes, starting with today's 7 p.m. season-opening dual against South Dakota State at Hilton Coliseum in Ames.

"You really can't match that experience," said Jackson, a two-time world freestyle champion who will make his college coaching debut.

Varner likely will match up against the Jackrabbits' top wrestler Tyler Sorenson, who went 14-4 last season.

"It will interesting to see if the South Dakota (State) kid comes to compete or he comes to stay close," said Jackson, whose preseason No. 2 Cyclones finished third at last season's NCAA Championships. "If he tries to keep it close, it's up to Jake to try to have that point margin at the end of the match and try to do it the way he's been trained to do it."

Varner finished 2-1 in Denmark, branching out in terms of technique and level of competition after a banner 31-2, 2008-09 championship season.

"Back here, you've still got to be on you're A-game, but it brings you along a little farther, I guess," Varner said of competing among the world's best.

Jackson excelled within that elite group many times. Now he'll be back at Hilton - in a suit, not a singlet, preparing others for the type of success he achieved.

"This year is going to be full of firsts and I think to get our season started in Hilton Coliseum with a dual meet in front of our home fans ... definitely there's going to be a smile on my face," Jackson said.

"We're all eagerly anticipating seeing our athletes perform and seeing if they're making those connections that we've been working on for a while now."

Hawks have 'some unfinished business'
Iowa wrestling aims for national, individual titles
Andy Hamilton • Iowa City Press-Citizen • November 12, 2009

The national championship trophy from March still sits in the glass case at one end of Iowa's wrestling room. It looks just the same and shines every bit as bright as the one the Hawkeyes won the previous year.

But Iowa's newest title trophy still feels hollow to the Hawkeyes.

Sure, they swept through the seventh perfect season in team history and went wire-to-wire at the top of the national rankings. But Iowa has been all about individual championships since Tom Brands became the head coach in 2006, and the Hawkeyes came up empty in pursuit of their greatest goals.

Iowa rallied through the consolations at the NCAA Championships to claim its second straight national title, the second in school history that came without an individual champ.

"I don't think anyone committed to our program was really happy with how it transpired and how we won," All-American Daniel Dennis said. "We want multiple, multiple, multiple champs. It's the same title, and I don't want to say it was meaningless because it wasn't -- it was impressive how we were still able to walk away with the title -- but I don't think anyone was really excited about it."

Iowa held its annual media day Wednesday. It was a chance for the Hawkeyes to reflect on what transpired nearly eight months ago and look forward to rewriting the final chapter this season.

"There's some unfinished business there," Brands said. "You open the door for the opponent to be happy for your demise a little bit, and that's probably what stings the most even though we won the team title. I know there's 85 Division I schools that would trade places with us in a heartbeat, but that's not what it's about to me. It's not solely about the team title, it's about getting those results where guys are feeling good about themselves."

It's about picking up a gold trophy next March in Omaha that feels solid.

Iowa certainly has the firepower. The Hawkeyes are ranked No. 1. They have seven All-Americans on their roster, and Brands could assemble a lineup with seniors filling eight weights.

"We've got a pretty talented group of guys here who can go out and put a whole lot of points on the board," said senior Brent Metcalf, a 2008 national champion and runner-up last season. "Being a senior maybe means they've been through it before and they should understand and grasp the idea of how to go and do it. Does that mean it's automatic? Does it mean that because they're a senior and because it matters more this year that it's going to happen? No way.

"We have to keep that in mind as a team, as individuals that the talent is there, we've shown it and proven it, but we have to go and perform, and you've got to go and do it when it matters most."

Brands and his staff went through a thorough dissection after last season. The knockout performances weren't as recurrent as they had been the previous season. The practices weren't as dazzling. Something seemed slightly askew throughout the year.

But the Hawkeyes kept winning. They went 24-0 and extended their dual winning streak to 38. Still, Iowa had to rally to repeat as champions of the Midlands and the National Duals, and its bid for a second straight national title was in jeopardy entering the tournament's final day.

Past All-Americans Charlie Falck, Alex Tsirtsis and Jay Borschel got knocked out of the tournament before they could reach the medal stand. Dennis spent nearly a month on top of the national rankings and slipped to seventh. Heavyweight Dan Erekson, who placed fourth, was the only Hawkeye who left the tournament with a better placing than his seed.

The biggest stunner came in Iowa's final match of the season when Metcalf's 69-match winning streak was snapped by Darrion Caldwell in the 149-pound title bout.

"The thing that always comes up to me is the two seniors who left with nothing," two-time All-American Phil Keddy said of Falck and Tsirtsis. "It's not about them being an All-American. Both of those guys had goals of being a national champ and they're both going to have that regret forever. All of us seniors have another chance, where they didn't get that. I look at that as a lesson to be learned."

There were lessons Brands and his staff learned, too. Brands didn't integrate sweeping changes, but there were subtle tweaks.

Iowa assistant Doug Schwab said the Hawkeyes adjusted the length of practices to keep the wrestlers fresh in their mind and make the workouts more efficient.

"You look and you try to figure out why we didn't perform like we were capable," Schwab said. "I think last year we deferred to our athletes in some situations, and it didn't work out. You can't just hope that a guy comes around.

"Not that we were hoping, but we're taking them by the hand, and we're going to lead them so they do come around. It was a good learning experience to still win and still go undefeated as a team throughout the year and maybe not really ever feel like you performed at your top level. I guess that says a lot about our guys, that they rise to the occasion when needed."

There's an unrelenting sense of urgency surrounding Iowa wrestling. It's the product of a program that demands national titles that come wrapped with individual bows. It's the result of a team loaded with talent.

Dennis and Metcalf anchor Iowa's first four weights. The Hawkeyes figure to be strong at 141 once they figure out who they'll use there.

Joe Slaton was a national finalist as a sophomore at 133 pounds. Dan LeClere started on Iowa's 2008 title team. Neither is a cinch to start at 141 this season with the emergence of sophomore Montell Marion.

Freshman Matt McDonough cut down from 133 and won Iowa's wrestle-offs at 125.

"The motivation level is high at those two weights we lose," Brands said of 125 and 141. "I don't see a lot of guys questioning themselves or looking at it like (the season is) long and grueling and hard. I look at guys who are motivated there."

There's motivation at the other end of the lineup. Ryan Morningstar was seconds from the national finals at 165. He eventually placed third. Borschel finished third as a sophomore before last year's slip. Keddy went 34-5 at 184 with all five of his losses coming to graduated seniors.

Chad Beatty took an 18-4 record into the NCAA meet at 197 before a 1-2 exit. Erekson had eventual champion Mark Ellis of Missouri on the ropes in the national quarterfinals.

The Hawkeyes have carried those defeats around for nearly eight months. The shortcomings left Iowa with a hollow trophy sitting in the glass case at one end of its practice room.

"One of the biggest things for this year for me and for a lot of guys on the team is feeling good about that win," Metcalf said. "Let's go and win a national title and let's feel good about it. Let's dominate, let's go and perform the way we really can."

Depth is one of the Hawks' strengths
Andy Hamilton • Iowa City Press-Citizen • November 12, 2009

Iowa's All-America heavyweight just got his surgically-repaired arm out of a sling Monday, two of the team's top contenders at 141 pounds might not be in the lineup until after Christmas, and one of the Hawkeyes' prized freshmen is a few weeks from getting on the mat again.

It's a good thing depth is one of Iowa wrestling's strong suits.

The Hawkeyes could be without heavyweight Dan Erekson until January, and Joe Slaton and Montell Marion might be absent from the lineup nearly as long.

Erekson underwent surgery last month to repair a pectoral tear. At the time of the injury, the senior said the timetable for his return was somewhere in the range of two to three months.

"Everything's going good, on schedule," Erekson said. "I got the sling off Monday. The last couple weeks I've been riding the bike, lifting weights. At six weeks, I can get more active."

Erekson returned from a midseason ankle injury last season to win the Big Ten title and place fourth at the NCAA Championships. He said the pectoral tear sounded like Velcro coming apart.

"Right away, you think negative things," Erekson said.

"But I've been in that spot before, I've been injured. You've got to reverse it right away and be positive. How can I get better? What do I need to do?"

Erekson said he will be back in the Iowa lineup "when I can kick somebody's butt." In the meantime, sophomores Jordan Johnson and Blake Rasing are expected to take his place.

Iowa coach Tom Brands said he expects Erekson will be ready for the start of the Big Ten dual season in January, if not sooner.

"If we had to rush it, we probably could, but there's no reason to," Brands said.

The forecast isn't as clear with Slaton and Marion. Brands said the Hawkeyes are "wading through some issues" with the 141-pounders.

Slaton did not compete last weekend in Iowa's wrestle-offs. Marion beat senior Dan LeClere in the final round, but Brands indicated Wednesday that LeClere would open the season as the starter for the Hawkeyes.

"Right now, he's the number one guy for whatever reason," Brands said. "He's got a job to do. If he does the job and doesn't look back.... He's going to be head-to-head with Slaton and Marion at the Midlands. The Midlands will be a big proving ground of where we're at at those weight classes."

Freshman Tony Ramos, a three-time Illinois state high school champion, said he's close to getting back on the mat after undergoing surgery nearly six weeks ago to repair a fractured knee.

Ramos said he's on track to possibly start drilling again in three weeks and hopes to wrestle Dec. 29-30 at the Midlands Championships.

"They had to go in and pull a chip out and pin it down in place," Ramos said. "I'm way ahead (of schedule). (Doctors) told me three or four months. They were thinking January or February."

Metcalf focused on reclaiming title
Posted on Nov 10, 2009 by KJ Pilcher.
IOWA CITY — One match doesn’t define University of Iowa wrestler Brent Metcalf.

You won’t see him celebrate a win or dwell on a rare loss.

So, it’s not surprising that his focus to recapture a national title and reassert himself as the nation’s top wrestler isn’t blurred by a need to avenge last year’s disappointing national finals loss to North Carolina State’s Darrion Caldwell.

“My job is to go out and wrestle and go out and win,” Metcalf said. “It really doesn’t matter to me who’s in my way.”

Something he’s done with regularity in two seasons with the Hawkeyes, compiling a 72-2 record and winning the 149-pound national title in 2008.

But it was Caldwell, who handed Metcalf his only two collegiate losses, that snapped his 69-match win streak with an 11-6 decision in the 149-title bout in March.

Like a scar, it lingers but you function with it when the pain subsides.

“You can’t lose a match and can’t not care about it,” Metcalf said. “That’s not how it works.”

Metcalf said he was affected briefly, but had to rebound before his next competition — U.S. World Team Trials in May.

“You’re never going to put something like that completely behind you because you care about it enough that it matters to you,” said Metcalf, the 2008 Dan Hodge Trophy winner, given to the nation’s top wrestler, and Jesse Owens Big Ten Male Athlete of the Year. “At the same time you can’t let it drag you down.”

Caldwell is red-shirting this season after undergoing surgery Oct. 5 to repair an injured shoulder. Caldwell told NCSU’s student newspaper that he suffered the injury while rollerblading Labor Day weekend. His absence prevents a rematch, but that’s not the top priority.

“Would you like to have another crack at the guy?,” Metcalf said. “Of course you would, but it’s not my decision.”

Metcalf has been compared to former Hawkeye wrestler Lincoln McIlravy, a 3-time national champion who was upset in the finals as a junior by Illinois’ Steve Marianetti.

Metcalf said he talked with McIlravy, but more so with former Iowa Coach Dan Gable, whose only college loss came in the finals of his senior season at Iowa State.

Gable went on to the most dominant Olympic wrestling performance by winning a gold medal without allowing a point in 1972 at Munich, Germany. McIlravy was also an Olympic medalist.

“Just reminders that what defines you is what is going to happen in your career,” Metcalf recalled of Gable’s advice. “Just positive stuff. Just moving forward and continue to what I’m doing at a higher level.”

Iowa Coach Tom Brands noted that Metcalf is motivated by being the best. Extra motivation is unnecessary, but remains a factor.

“It’s a catalyst,” Brands said. “I don’t think Brent Metcalf has any more urgency with this loss though. I think his work ethic and his approach is where it needs to be regardless.”

Metcalf said his mindset is the same and that’s becoming the best wrestler in the country, in the world and even of all-time. Nothing has derailed his preparation, according to Brands.

“He’s pretty much doing what he needs to do. He’s done it all summer,” Brands said. “Getting better every day is the focus it has to be. His philosophy is to get better every day. To get tough when it’s time to get tough.”

What I mind most interesting is that he wrestled as a true freshman, qualified for NCAAs and then went on a two-year mission (LDS?) to Japan before last season. With the rust officially shaken off and his performance against Saddoris & Kisner, he could be in for quite a year.

This poor depraved young man is truly in a dark spot right now and needs your support.

I reluctantly engaged him in a conversation regarding whether Virginia Tech would have been a top 10 team last year with the Iowa 5 on them. He of course said they would not be a top 10 team.

After we broke down every weight he conceded that they would be top 10. However, when he realized this made me right, he actually went back and did the math for every weight to see if VT would in fact be a top 10 team.

Will somebody please trade him a 25 pounder so that these great lengths will not have to be gone through in order for him to reinforce in his mind that he can potentially be correct about things.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The Novachkov brothers -- Boris and Filip -- each won a pair of matches to solidify their spots in the starting lineup, highlighting Cal Poly's Green vs. Gold intrasquad wrestling match Saturday afternoon in Mott Gym.

Boris Novachkov, who redshirted last year after a 15-6 record as a freshman, earned a fall and an 8-5 decision against Brandyn Rocha to anchor his position at 133 pounds.

Filip Novachkov, an NCAA qualifier a year ago and 23-9 overall, posted 16-3 and 19-4 decisions over Andy Wagner at 141 pounds.

Several other weight classes were locked up as well with Mustang wrestlers winning twice against their teammates.

At 125, Micah Ferguson was a 9-7 and 11-9 winner over Jake Tanenbaum while Eric Maldonado was an 8-6 and 10-2 winner over Nick Fisher at 149.

Ryan DesRoches won by a fall and a 19-4 decision over Grant Haschak at 174 and Ryan Smith earned a 19-7 decision and a fall against Kelan Bragg at 197.

At 165, Steven Vasquez and Travis Rasmussen traded low-scoring decisions before Vasquez locked up the position with a 12-4 major decision.

At 184, Tyler Holt edged Ben Crosby 3-2, but Crosby returned the favor with a 7-5 decision. A third bout will be held early next week.

The same holds true at 285 as Lenny Romero beat Jim Powers 8-3 in the first meeting, but Powers edged Romero 3-2 in overtime in the second matchup.

Finally, at 157, NCAA All-American and two-time Pac-10 champion Chase Pami beat Geoffrey Doss with a 12-4 major decision in the opening bout. In the second meeting, Pami trailed 4-2 when he was forced to default due to injury.

Cal Poly officially opens the 2009-10 season Saturday with a Pac-10 dual meet at Cal State Fullerton, starting at 1 p.m.
