According to this article, he's thinking about giving it a shot. What sets this apart from other such articles is that they interviewed Gentry, Canada's last Olympian at 74 kg and our current #2.

I did some searching for a similar thread about a year ago. GSP did compete in some local tournaments in the early 2000's, won some medals as well. He was splitting matches with jr. national medalists (ie Byers, Chicone); couldn't find any results against top level sr. guys. Based on those results he has a ways to go to challenge for our spot, not sure how much wrestling he has done in the training room since.

There is a pretty good training situation in Montreal if he does decide to make a go of it. Gia Sissouri wrestles and coaches there. World 5th placer and Olympian Zilberman (96 kg) and Olympic Trials runner up Marghetis (74 kg) wrestle there.

http://www.canada.com/edmontonjourna...2-dfe98d0b0413 (article here, Gia left Edmonton to go back to Montreal shortly after it was written).

Thoughts, esp from Canadian wrestlers, but any one really?

Close loss to Russia, with Herbert at 84 USA might have won.
Video any one? The Paulson match sounds like a blast... I thought those two might be moving up in weight since the Travis wrestled 84 at Hargobind, but maybe not.

So what is the story with these guys? Are they switching to freestyle permanently?

Haze is right there in Greco, it would be shocking to see him switch. Then again I have no doubt he'd be near the top of the ladder with some freestyle experience.

Ware is a bit of an enigma. From tournament to tournament, you don't know if he's going to go 132 or 145 - and lately you don't know if he'll be freestyle or Greco! Frayer was much larger than him from the finals video, guess he's a classic tweener. Still, it would be nice to see him stick with a weight/style and go full bore - he has all the technique and ability to make the world team.

I don't know whether to really post this thread in the college, high school, or FS and GR forum. I know that since Canada wrestles in the international styles mostly; it kind of makes me what to post it to this forum.

For any Canadians, I have these questions to ask:

Just what styles are wrestled in high school and college (what Canadians mostly call "university") in Canada? Is it FS or GR or both? What are significant rule changes, if any, from the rules produced by FILA?

This may be hard to answer, but has any Canadian wrestled American folkstyle? If so, what are the main differences in terms of the experience? Have you found it hard to transition between styles? Which styles, folkstyle or FS/GR are the most rewarding and fun experiences for Canadians?

Do you find that wrestling is a popular sport among students in Canada? Has it gained the kind of traction it has in the United States with youth clubs and school/college teams?

What other things are significant about high school and university wrestling in Canada that you think Americans should know?

Yes I've posted this in three different areas so let's hear your favorite memory having to do with freestyle/greco or international wrestling.

I'll start
It was my sophomore year wrestling, and my first year wrestling freestyle. I was wrestling juniors at 191.5 and drew a nationally ranked wrestler from Grant's Pass (I don't remember his name). I caught him on his back and touchfalled him in the first round of the state freestyle tournament at Marshfield High in Coos Bay (Steve Prefontain's school).

I also got to watch my cousin wrestle Kenny Cox and get tossed like a rag doll for 5 twice.

That same year our club went to Butte Montana for the western regionals. What an incredible tournament.
