Random quote from the article:

Still, this is not as bad as the tattoo that Washington Wizards G/F DeShawn Stevenson added this past offseason -- a Pittsburgh Pirates "P" on his cheek. The only problem is, it's backward. Did you do it yourself in a mirror, DeShawn? Because it looks like a 9. "If you're standing [farther away] it looks like a P," Stevenson told The Washington Times in what has to be the leader for Dumbest Quote of 2009.

Um, nope, still backward, DeShawn. From close-up, from far away, from the Hubble telescope, still backward. Luckily, it's only on your face.

For some, Week 11 was easy pickens, not so for others. We had six players tie for the Week 11 Jimmy the Greek of the Week title, CB, Gage, nywrestler4life, RYou, Ms. Stardust, and tpay, the most winners for the weekly title. All had 8 of 10 correct for 12 points. For Ms. Stardust, this is 2nd title in a row having won Week 10. It is the first title for CB, nywrestler4life and tpay. Little Gage picks up his 4th Jimmy title, the most we've had by a player in a single season.

With 12 points on the week, Gage jumps back into the lead for the regular season championship. Entering 4 points down to SGallan, the 5 point bonus was the difference as Gage had the right pick to put him back into a one point lead with 2 weeks remaining in the regular season. (Dang for some, the season ends next Saturday.)

the lovelorn, after chasing the guy she loved to NY, after all the breakups and getting back together, after four years of sweetness, bitter and pains, found what she really wanted.

‘That's what love is, risking a part of yourself.’

I can’t remember what the exact circumstance is when Felicity said that. But this was all she was doing, waiting for the guy Ben, who was kinda immature and unperceptive.

After all the things they’d been through, there was always a dawn on the horizon with the one you love waking up right beside you.

After his father’s surgery, holding Felicity’s hand when they walked out of the hospital, Ben said that it’s not about the thing that they are the best student, it’s just they care.

Ben: Sometimes I think u should be with someone else, sometimes I think u should be with Noel.

Ben, I wanna be with you.

Noel, the one who had spent the past three and half years of his life waiting for someone who wants to be with someone else. Actually he’s kinda guy most of the girls dream of yet maybe the pathetic part is that they have to figure this out till the last minute, just like Felicity.

‘She loves u, not me. You guys love each other, and u should be together.’

See, how cute the guy is.

It's amazing that things just don't work out the way you think they are. He sighed before Felicity the day before his wedding to another girl.

Week 10 was not kind to our players, but SGallan and Ms. Stardust were sharp enough to foresee a few of the upsets, hitting 6 of the 10 games and take the Jimmy the Greek of the Week title for week No. 10. This is the first title for Ms. Stardust and the 3rd title for SGallan. SG's. 3rd title ties Gage for most titles so far.

PHOENIX -- Phoenix police have arrested two people accused of stealing about 1,000 bags from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport passengers, authorities said.
According to an overnight report from the Phoenix Police Department, Keith King, 62, and Stacy Legg-King, 38, were arrested on burglary charges after officers discovered the bags during an investigation into luggage theft from Sky Harbor.

http://www.kpho.com/news/21507442/detail.html

It appears that this couple have stolen over 1000 pieces of luggage from Phoenix Sky Harbor airport. I have traveled through this airport a number of times since my son and his family live there and I visit as often as I can, but have always had to wait for my bag and golf clubs at the belt. Just wondering if anybody has had any problems with LOST luggage there.

I'm looking at the rankings and I can't tell you how much I'm hoping for all of the unbeaten teams (aside from either Alabama and Florida for obvious reasons) to remain unbeaten through the end of the season.

Right now it's possible for the following to end up undefeated:

Florida/Alabama - whoever wins the SEC title game

Texas - Big12 champ

Cincinnati - BigEast champ

Iowa - Big10 champ

Boise State - WAC champ

TCU - MWC champ

In past years, when there has been multiple teams with one loss, you could always say to any of the team, "if you'd won all of your games you wouldn't have to worry about this....." This year, you could have an Iowa team, with a much stronger schedule than Texas, Cinci, or Bama, left out because they started too low in the pre-season rankings. You could have a Boise St. team, who demolished the pac-10 champ, being left out of any BCS bowl game because of the conference in which they play and because TCU is ranked higher.

I know they won't all end the season unbeaten, but as a play-off fan, I can certainly hope for the unbelievable outcry that would happen if all of them ended unbeaten after the regular season and at least 4 of them were unbeaten after the bowls.

Anyone else rooting for complete BCS chaos?

Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott said he will meet with suspended Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount and school officials over possible reinstatement.

Blount was suspended for the season after punching a Boise State player in the aftermath of Oregon’s 19-8 loss to the Broncos in the season opener.

Scott says he’ll meet with Blount, university president Richard Lariviere, athletic director Mike Bellotti and coach Chip Kelly. He didn’t say when the meet will take place.

Congrats to Jake T and Big Stiffy for their 2nd Jimmy the Greek for Week titles. Both had 8 of 10 right for 12 points. Stiffy had the week in the bag until the result of the Minny v Mich State game was tallied, but he took the loss and while Jake T saw the Minny upset coming to tie for the week.

Jake T, cap'n combover, SGallan and Viratas were the only ones to pick Minny over Michigan State.

Jake T also called the Oregon win over USC, as did Gage, JensenS, Stardust and Trusty

Even though Gage missed the bonus pick this week, he scored enough wins to retain the lead for the season championship. SGallan was one in the minority to pick Auburn over Mississippi State and now moves back to within 2 points of the lead. Big Stiffy and Zapp Brannigan are not far behind the leaders.

TELEVISION REVIEW

'The Botany of Desire' Oct. 28
By ROBERT LLOYD Television Critic

Based on Michael Pollan's book of the same name, “The Botany of Desire,” airing tonight on PBS, looks at the ways in which plants have advanced their agenda, metaphorically speaking, by making themselves attractive to humans. There is a lot of speaking in metaphors in the two-hour documentary, much of it by Pollan himself, who regularly takes pains to remind us that he is, in fact, speaking metaphorically, because we have no words to describe the psychology of species beside our own. Besides, a little anthropomorphizing can be a useful thing when you're telling a story, especially when the moral is that we are all in this together, plants and people and every living thing, and so mutually dependent that it's impossible to tell the user from the used.

All plants share an "existential predicament," Pollan says, in that they cannot move. And yet they have gotten themselves around the world, sometimes stowing away, but sometimes showing a bit of metaphorical leg, like Claudette Colbert in "It Happened One Night," to flag down a ride. It was Pollan's inspiration to try to view this process from the point of view of the plant. The four species profiled here are the apple tree, which does its work by sweetness; the tulip, which seduces with its beauty; cannabis, which gets you high, dude; and the potato, which, if I understand it correctly, gives you the illusion of "control" by being easy to grow with a high yield and full of calories and nutrients.

This is, as you might imagine, an extremely pretty show -- not the potatoes or the pot so much, though some of the marijuana plants, reshaped by hydroponic farming and a kind of "extreme sexual frustration" (that's correct) to get you even higher -- dude -- look like Dale Chihuly glass sculptures. And the Peruvian potatoes come in a surprising variety of shapes and colors, each adapted to its own mountain microclimate. (Compare and contrast with the Burbank Russet, the McDonald's French fry potato, which has taken over Idaho.) The tulips are, of course, beautiful, and the apples look good enough to eat, even the ones that aren't.

Besides being nice to look at it, it is full of interesting things to know. We visit the wild apple forests of Kazakhstan, get the lowdown on Johnny Appleseed, the cider boom, and the rebranding of the apple as a talisman against doctors. The marijuana section, which includes clips of films I'm sure I saw in health class (and footage of Louis Armstrong that I'm sure I didn't) is the certainly rare instance in which a public television documentary, by virtue of its theme, paints pot as a success story. We go to Amsterdam's pot-filled "coffee shops" and to labs where mice are made forgetful. (THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, mimics the naturally occurring brain chemical anandamide, which helps us forget -- something we never would have learned if some people didn't smoke pot and other people didn't study them.)

For the tulip, we travel to Holland in the 17th century, when a prized bulb could cost as much as a house, and where today the international flower market is largely based, a multibillion-dollar trade in what Pollan calls "exquisitely useless" things. The humbler potato takes us to the Andes, and to Idaho, and to Ireland, where the spud first fed a nation and then, when a spore killed them all, didn't.

That was not the fault of the potato, but of a decision to plant only one variety of spud all over Ireland, so that when disaster came, it came everywhere. Though Pollan sees human interference in plant life as part of the evolutionary process, its effects can be disastrous. (Except in marijuana, apparently, where we've done great things.) Monoculture, in which naturally occurring varieties of a plant are suppressed in favor of the ones that sell, is the enemy of genetic health, requiring the farmer to pour on the pesticides. Pollan's pitch is for diversity; all four segments are essentially a pitch for working with, rather than against, nature.

He remarks at one point how strange it is that humans and bees should react positively to so many of the same things -- the same sorts of colors, patterns, perfumes. And whether it is the case that the bee is more human than you might have imagined or the human more of a bee than you would like to imagine, Pollan's larger point is that we are all in it together. While that is not exactly news, it remains the great still-needs-to-be-really-learned lesson of our time, if we want a future with buds and bees in it.
A dad who shot dead a judge and a senior politician because they molested his three-year old daughter has become a national hero after going on the run in Lithuania.

Horrified Drasius Keyds, 37, gunned down the perverted pair on Monday after police turned a deaf ear to his pleas for justice for his tortured tot.

Now in hiding, Keyds has become a hero on YouTube and Facebook with hundreds of thousands of fans from all over the world pledging support.

"You are a hero to all of us," reads one Facebook message. "What you did is nothing but justice."

Mugs and t-shirts with his image on them have begun appearing alongside the logo "Drasius: Lone-avenger".

Keyds' nightmare began a year ago when daughter Deimantela told him about a meeting set up by his then fiancee with judge Jonas Furmanavicziusa and the Speaker of Lithuania's parliament , Andrius Us.

The pair allegedly raped and abused the youngster who reported her ordeal to her father.

But a year long campaign for a police investigation failed when detectives told Keyds there was not enough evidence to proceed with a case.

Now the fugitive dad is being offered a safe haven in neighbouring countries like Poland.

Parliamentary deputy speaker Stefan Niesiołowski said: "This is a clear case of incompetent law enforcement on the original crime."
A representative for Phillips also announced the former Mets general manager was entering a treatment facility "to address his personal issues."

Phillips' acknowledgment Wednesday of his relationship with 22-year-old Brooke Hundley was splashed across the New York tabloids for days, embarrassing the Bristol, Conn.-based sports giant........
Alabama v. Tennesee was a FG contest, but it was still a good one. Cody could have been penalized for taking his helmet off immediately after blocking the kick(during the play essentially) which would have given Tennessee more yards and a closer fg attempt. But who wants to win like that?

Jack Nelson, long-time Washington DC bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times, died this week. He was 80.

A white Southerner, he risked his career -- and life -- as a reporter covering the major events of the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s, including the March on Selma. He was one of those brave journalists who made the world aware of the bigotry in action in the US South 45 years ago.

Truly bizarre -- and upsetting. Makes you thankful these guys weren't in the cockpit of the US Airways Airbus that made the "water landing" in the Hudson in January...

Pilots missed Twin Cities by 150 miles _ but how?
By JOAN LOWY (AP) – 2 hours ago

WASHINGTON — Were the pilots distracted? Catching up on their sleep? Federal investigators struggled to determine what the crew members of a Northwest Airlines jetliner were doing at 37,000 feet as they sped 150 miles past their Minneapolis destination and military jets readied to chase them. Unfortunately, the cockpit voice recorder may not tell the tale.

A report released late Friday said the pilots passed breathalyzer tests and were apologetic after Wednesday night's amazing odyssey. They said they had been having a heated discussion about airline policy. But aviation safety experts and other pilots were frankly skeptical they could have become so consumed with shoptalk that they forgot to land an airplane carrying 144 passengers.

The most likely possibility, they said, is that the pilots simply fell asleep somewhere along their route from San Diego...

(For the rest of the story: http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/...vjYdQD9BH4FIG2

The Christian Science Monitor tells us this isn't the first time airline pilots have been caught napping -- or too engaged in cockpit conversation: http://www.csmonitor.com/2009/1024/p90s01-usgn.html

Sales dies at 83
By DAVID N. GOODMAN, Associated Press Writer

Soupy Sales, the rubber-faced comedian whose anything-for-a-chuckle career was built on 20,000 pies to the face and 5,000 live TV appearances across a half-century of laughs, has died. He was 83.

Sales died Thursday night at Calvary Hospice in the Bronx, New York, said his former manager and longtime friend, Dave Usher. Sales had many health problems and entered the hospice last week, Usher said.

At the peak of his fame in the 1950s and '60s, Sales was one of the best-known faces in the nation, Usher said.

"If President Eisenhower would have walked down the street, no one would have recognized him as much as Soupy," Usher said.

Also in the article, which I found particularly amusing:

Sales was born Milton Supman on Jan. 8, 1926, in Franklinton, North Carolina, where his was the only Jewish family in town. His parents, owners of a dry-goods store, sold sheets to the Ku Klux Klan.
