That, mixed... Rich Franklin is a man who has made his name in the UFC off of great fights, middleweight dominance (before Anderson Silva) and respect. That, mixed in with results have left Franklin as one of the most successful, fan-loved figures in the UFC.

Luiz Cane, however, has used brutality and KO's to establish somewhat of a name for himself in the UFC.

With his only loss coming by disqualification at UFC 79 to James Irvin, Cane has not lost since then, with wins over Jason Lambert, Sokoudjou, and recently making his UFC debut, Steve Cantwell.

What does this mean for Cane? Better than that; what does this mean for the UFC?

Fighting Franklin is a big step up in competition for Cane, fighting a man that just came off a very impressive victory over Wanderlei Silva. Cane's striking is very dangerous, but likely shouldn't be compared to the ferocity of Silva.

For Franklin, this could be a nice filler bout, waiting amid the results of UFC 101's loser between Anderson Silva and Forrest Griffin. An impressive win over Cane could give Franklin a shot at Silva at 205 or Griffin, whomever loses the bout.

For Cane, a win over Franklin provides a nice win to his resume, and some better competition in the very near future. Dana White will likely take a Cane win, and glorify it to the point of calling him the next Cain Velasquez at 205. Is that the case?

Either way, it's an interesting bout to say the least, and one matchmaker Joe Silva should take a look at before passing aside. It won't be your standard striker-grappler bout, which should mean both guys will be looking to throw.

Combined, Franklin and Cane have 21 TKO wins (compared to just 10 total submission wins-9 coming from Franklin) so this has the makings of a good bout.

Before there was Junie Browning, there was Chris Leben, pissing on people's pillows, drinking himself into oblivion, and picking fights.

The win over Santiago looks even better now, as the American Top Team member is on a prolonged winning streak since leaving the UFC, while losses to Anderson Silva and Mike Bisping aren't anything to shake your head at.



69. Shane Carwin


UFC Record: 3-0
Victories Over: Christian Wellisch, Neil Wain, Gabriel Gonzaga

The way he's flattening opponents, Carwin could make a monstrous climb up this list in no time flat. Most impressive was the win over Gonzaga, as not only is he considered a solid contender at heavyweight, but Carwin was also able to withstand an early attack and finish the fight himself, all inside two minutes.



68. Spencer Fisher


UFC Record: 8-3
Victories Over: Caol Uno, Dan Lauzon, Thiago Alves

"The King" is easily one of my favorite fighters and not because of the shared name. Every fight he's in seems to turn into a war and he's come out on the winning end more often than not.

The two fights with Sam Stout were epic, as was the fight with Frankie Edgar. Despite speculative stories around the Internet earlier this week, I don't see Spencer Fisher going anywhere any time soon.



67. David Terrell


UFC Record: 2-1
Victories Over: Scott Smith, Matt Lindland

This is a name some might not be familiar with, simply because following his UFC 59, David Terrell seemingly fell off the face of the Earth. He's been rumored to return on several occasions, but always comes down with an pre-fight injury.

While the win over Lindland was outstanding, it's his loss to Evan Tanner for the Middleweight title where people best remember Terrell.



66. Tyson Griffin


UFC Record: 6-2
Victories Over: Gleison Tibau, Thiago Tavares, Clay Guida

Outside of his win over "The Carpenter," Tyson Griffin hasn't beaten another member of The UFC 100. While both losses come to fighters featured higher up the charts, Griffin hasn't beaten anyone of great stock (save for Guida) in the UFC and still earns accolades off his win over Urijah Faber from back in 2005.



65. Stephan Bonnar


UFC Record: 5-4
Victories Over: Eric Schafer, Keith Jardine, James Irvin

I get it: You and Forrest had that great slugfest to end Season One of The Ultimate Fighter. Thanks. Now beat someone meaningful again already, and Mark Coleman doesn't count. My gas tank lasts longer than Mark Coleman's, and I'm a smoker who nobody would characterize as athletic. And what happens if somehow Coleman wins?



64. Frankie Edgar


UFC Record: 5-1
Victories Over: Spencer Fisher, Tyson Griffin, Sean Sherk

Edgar is one of two or three fighters with a legitimate argument for a title shot at 155. His one loss came to No. 75 Gray Maynard and the back-to-back wins over Hermes Franca and Sean Sherk help to erase that memory.

While I think Diego Sanchez will get the winner of Penn vs. Florian, I'd love to see him step into the cage with the New Jersey native with a great last name.



63. Joe Stevenson


UFC Record: 7-4
Victories Over: Nate Diaz, Gleison Tibau, Dokonjonosuke Mishima

The verdict is still out on Stevenson, at least in my books. The win over Diaz was solid and Mishima is considered a Top 10 featherweight, and you can't totally fault the guy for losing to three of the top lightweights the UFC has to offer in Penn, Florian and Sanchez.

But every time he gets a chance to take the next step, he stumbles, and that is why he is now stuck in lightweight purgatory, without any clear indication of where he goes next.



62. Renato "Babalu" Sobral


UFC Record: 6-4
Victories Over: David Heath, Chael Sonnen, Travis Wiuff

You can also include former heavyweight champ Maurice Smith among Babalu's victories, while his losses add to his ranking as well.

After all, you can't really fault a guy for twice being stopped by Chuck Liddell at the height of his success and losing to another former heavyweight champion in Kevin Randleman. The Jason Lambert loss, that one you can fault him for.



61. Caol Uno


UFC Record: 3-4-1
Victories Over: Fabiano Iha, Din Thomas, Yves Edwards

The prime example of wins not necessarily being everything, Uno fought B.J. Penn to a draw for the Lightweight title when Jens Pulver vacated the belt, and has lost to Pulver (while champion), Penn, Hermes Franca and Spencer Fisher. Uno is a warrior who helped pioneer what is now the UFC Lightweight division.

1. I'm not going to stop talking about UFC 100 for the next seven days.
2. The UFC has to promote every fight with one of their biggest stars as their "toughest test to date" in the same way that you love the man or woman you're with right now more than anyone you've ever loved in your life before...wink wink.
3. In part, this is a social experiment to see if all the rabid GSP fans here on Bleacher Report will jump all over this post.

Now that we've got that out of the way, let's get down to brass tacks, shall we?

With UFC 100 next on the schedule, the promo pieces are everywhere these days, including being shown 497 times during the last episode of The Ultimate Fighter. Trust me, I counted.

As I mentioned in point No. 2, I know there is a portion of the billing that is obligatory; you're not going to build up a fight like this as Georges St-Pierre faces an easier challenge than he has as of late when he takes on Thiago "The Pit Bull" Alves. I get that.

But here's the rub: In pushing Alves, the UFC is referencing his "demolition" of Matt Hughes. Once again, some of this is understandable as Matt Hughes is a much more widely known name than Alves' actual last victim, Josh Koscheck, and it's not like Alves ran through vintage Matt Hughes.

The Matt Hughes Alves beat was the same guy that eeked out a decision over Matt Serra a couple months back, and beating that guy isn't as big an accomplishment as the UFC Marketing & Publicity department would like you to believe.

Here is where we start to have a little fun. Just so people don't start calling me a homer and thinking that I'm firmly planted on Team GSP for this fight simply because he and I have the same home and native land, the main person of reference in all this will be Thiago Alves himself.

While I could certainly just bring up names of St-Pierre's record, going back through Alves' fights and analyzing them on their own and in reference to GSP's performance against the same opponent will be more unbiased. Or at least that's what I'll tell myself and all of you for right now.



Josh Koscheck

Alves and Kos fought back in October with "The Pit Bull" earning a unanimous decision over the TUF 1 alum. While Alves clearly dominated the fight from bell to bell, it should be noted that Koscheck stepped in and took this fight on short notice when Diego Sanchez got injured during training.

While the short notice change of opponent changes things for Alves, I'm one of those people who believes that the guy who has been training for an extended period regardless of opponent should always come out on top of the guy who just got the call a couple weeks ago.

All that being said, when GSP made his return to the ring after losing his welterweight belt to Matt Serra, it was Koscheck that he faced and the two went the distance as well, with GSP earning the same unanimous decision that Alves would later earn.

That makes Josh Koscheck a push.



Matt Hughes

I've already stated that this wasn't the Matt Hughes who dominated the welterweight division for all those years. Personally, this was the fight where I knew without a doubt that Matt Hughes should be hanging them up and heading back to the farm.

Alves definitely clobbered Hughes with a sick flying knee, but again, there is a wrinkle. Alves failed to make weight for this fight, and while it wasn't like he came in weighing 220 or anything like that (he weighted 174), the energy and strength that Alves didn't have to expend cutting those final, most difficult, few pounds is something that can easily impact a fight.

Hughes is an interesting opponent when it comes to GSP because the two have had three fights, with St-Pierre holding a 2-1 edge and back-to-back wins. While the second victory came only six months prior to Hughes loss to Alves, the first win came in November 2006, when Matt Hughes was still Matt Hughes.

Edge: St-Pierre



Karo Parisyan

"The Pit Bull" smashed St-Pierre's current teammate and training partner when they met at UFC Fight Night 13, securing a stoppage in the early stages of the second round due to strikes. While I'm not a big Karo Parisyan fan, the guy is a solid opponent for anyone at 170, and Alves steamrolled him in impressive fashion.

On the other hand, GSP earned a unanimous decision victory over "The Heat" when he made his debut with the organization back at UFC 46. Normally, this is where I would go on about how much more evolved GSP is as a fighter now and whatever and whatever to make my case, but we're using Alves as the template, and he had the more impressive win.

Edge: Alves



Jon Fitch

This is the one that people (like myself) will use as the measuring stick for this fight. Alves and Fitch met back at Fight Night 5 in June 2006 when they were both starting to climb the ranks of the welterweight division.

Fitch took the win, stopping Alves in the second round. Here, too, I could play the "he's come a long way since then card," but results are results and we're looking at results.

As we all know, St-Pierre put an end to Fitch's UFC winning streak last August with a thoroughly dominating performance, although he wasn't able to put away the former Purdue Boilermaker. Still, with scores of 50-43, 50-44, and 50-44, it's clear to see how lopsided this one was.

Edge: GSP



Now that we're through with the similar opponents—where GSP has a 2-1 edge with one Josh Koscheck push—it must be acknowledged that both of these fighters have evolved and come a long way from earlier fights. If Alves were to step into the ring with Jon Fitch again, I truly believe the outcome would be very different, just as it would if GSP and Parisyan mixed it up again.

As much as I would love to sit here and cite GSP's battles with vintage Matt Hughes, two wins over B.J. Penn, and the domination of Jon Fitch as clear examples of why he should have less of a problem with Thiago Alves on July 11, I just can't bring myself to do it.

Penn never did and never will have any business fighting in any weight class except lightweight. I know he wants to test himself against the best and avenge being "robbed" the first time out against St-Pierre and whatever, but the dude is lightweight, and if GSP didn't pound the bejesus out of him the way he did at UFC 94, I would have been shocked.

I already stated my belief that Alves-Fitch 2 would go differently than Alves-Fitch 1 turned out, so that crosses him off the list, too, and while the extra weight and declining skills of Matt Hughes certainly worked in Alves' favor, he really did lay a beatin' on the old farm boy that night in London, only to follow it up with an even more impressive performance against Josh Koscheck.

Truth be told, when I started writing this piece I didn't think this was the conclusion I would come to. I actually made the "Alves lost to Jon Fitch" argument last night at work, but in looking back at things and being realistic and objective, there is only one conclusion that I can stand behind without wavering:

Thiago Alves IS the toughest test to date for Georges St-Pierre and the welterweight champion better be prepared.

Rankings apparently came into play when Tyler Clark made his decision to leave Iowa State and transfer to Iowa.

The two-time NCAA qualifier was listing some of the factors Thursday that led to his departure from the Cyclones when the business major mentioned the University of Iowa’s Tippie Business School, which recently ranked 44th nationally by U.S. News. Iowa State was unranked.

Of course, Iowa’s No. 1 wrestling program factored into the equation too.

“Right now,” Clark said, “this is the place to be.”

Clark, a 125-pounder, feels so strongly Iowa is the place for him that he’s sacrificing a scholarship check and an opportunity to compete next year to join the Hawkeyes.

Clark said Iowa State granted him a conditional release after coach Cael Sanderson left the Cyclones for Penn State and Kevin Jackson took over in Ames. Clark was restricted from transferring to Iowa penalty-free. Thus, he can’t have contact with Tom Brands or the Iowa coaches until his first day of classes in the fall, he’ll have to pay his way through school next year without scholarship assistance and he won’t be eligible to compete for the Hawkeyes next season.

Clark’s situation is similar to what four current Hawkeyes went through in 2006. Seniors Brent Metcalf, Jay Borschel, Dan LeClere and Joe Slaton, along with graduated senior T.H. Leet, left Virginia Tech after their first year at the school to attend Iowa and follow Brands, who had been named the head coach of the Hawkeyes that April.

Clark, however, didn’t use his redshirt at Iowa State so he won’t lose a year of eligibility next season and has two years left to compete.

“I would like to wrestle,” Clark said. “I’m on track as it is to graduate in four years. I’ve kept up on my schooling, so it would’ve been nice to graduate and have wrestling done in four years and focus on getting my master’s. But it might be a blessing in disguise. This could be a big improvement year for me. Not having that redshirt coming straight out of high school, I gained a lot of experience and I really didn’t have a chance to focus on my weak areas. This might be a time I can do that.”

Clark said a year of strictly training will give him an opportunity to hone his basic skills and get back to wrestling with an attacking style.

“I was like that in high school, and I kind of drifted away from that,” he said. “I’d like to get back to the way I was — always attacking, always being the aggressor.”

Clark picked Iowa State over Iowa during his senior year at Bettendorf. He said he was drawn to Ames by the recruiting pitch and plan that Iowa State assistant Cody Sanderson offered and envisioned himself going into engineering at the time.

The Cyclones pulled Clark out of redshirt for the National Duals in 2008. He went 18-12 as a freshman and posted a 25-8 record last year, notching a victory in January against national champion Angel Escobedo of Indiana before going 1-2 at the NCAA Championships.

Clark said “there were quite a few factors” that led to his decision to leave Iowa State.
“Obviously, coach Sanderson quitting was a big disappointment. I really liked him and it sucked to see him leave,” he said.

“I wanted to wait and see who the (new) coach was. There had been rumors that (Iowa assistant) Terry (Brands) was going to take the job, so I wanted to wait and see. I didn’t really make a decision until I found out who the coach was. I went and talked to coach Jackson maybe two and a half weeks after that and told him I wanted a release.”

Jackson told The Des Moines Register he got the feeling Clark “wasn’t comfortable with the change” and said Clark “would have had a tough time making our lineup next year with Andrew Long and Anthony Valles.”

“That’s not the reason I left,” Clark said. “I don’t run away from a challenge. If I did, I wouldn’t be coming into the returning national champions’ room, so it’s not that I’m running. But at the same time, he’s got to motivate those guys who are still there. Anthony Valles and Andrew Long are both tough competitors, and he’s got to find a way to motivate them.”

Clark will be reunited with high school teammates Jordan Johnson and Nick Trizzino at Iowa.

“I’ve talked to a lot of guys (at Iowa), and they’ve been pretty nice and welcoming,” Clark said. “They haven’t really held any grudges that I know of. I’ve talked to some of the guys at Iowa State, some close friends and they all understand. They just said you’ve got to do what’s best for you, and I believe this is the best place for me right now.”

I have struggled with this statement for days now because, well, what isn't great about football?

Let me lay it out there for you. I am not a fan of the sport. It's not a passing fancy or a seasonal attention-getter—uh—football is life for me.

I breathe it in during the season, and when it's no longer there, I no longer know how to fill the void.

Sure, there are ways to kill the time: NFL Draft talk, pre-season prognostications, Organized Team Activities (OTAs), mini-camps, etc.

All serve the purpose of giving me my dose, but none satisfy me like the actual season.

Bring me the big hits, the great runs, the playmakers, the pageantry, and the passion. The game can not be encapsulated in a word or a cliché.

It's Walter Payton. It's Reggie White. It's Sammy Baugh. It's Joe Greene. It's Tom Brady. It's Hines Ward. It's Vince Lombardi.

It's about the history and the hard-core nature of each team's fans.

It's about playing the game hard for 60+ minutes and leaving absolutely nothing on the field.

In short, football is about turning an inch into a yard. It's about making "the catch"—no matter how improbable. It's about playing hard for the other 10 guys on the field because there is no such thing as "saying die" as long as there is time left on the clock.

It's men playing hard for the glory—contracts be damned.

So, what's the best thing about football in one word?

Everything.



Joe Burgett—Wrestling

What I love about professional wrestling would have to be the entertainment it brings.

It is not a sport as we all know; however, it is sports entertainment. It brings a sport-like feel with the matches, and then they provide entertainment with storylines.
There is no ladder match or Hell in a Cell match in football or MMA.
Sure, since they are competitions, other sports are naturally entertaining.
But professional wrestling can make you feel as if you're watching a TV show similar to House, How I Met Your Mother, or Lie to Me. Despite knowing that the event is scripted, you become emotionally invested in seeing who will win, which is unknown to the spectator. That is entertaining to watch.
Then, you see athletic ability that you would see in a sport like basketball, football, or MMA.
When you watch a good wrestling match, you become engrossed in the potential outcome and the display of athleticism. So, it's the best of both worlds if you will.
It bring the sports aspect along with a TV-show feel. It's all entertainment, which is fun to watch.

What is the thing about football that makes it so compelling?
It's one thing—the competitive nature of the sport. Each game is usually decided by one or two-goal margin, and often, games finish in a draw. This provides compelling action, as each game is fought to the end because there is almost always the opportunity to rescue a result from the game.
This competition provides frenetic action with players giving their all for their clubs—not playing for the money, but for their teammates, their fans, and their clubs.
One word applies to football—global. But "local" applies, too. The fans show just as much passion for their respective teams from Brazil to Bath City FC.
So, why do I follow football incessantly?
Is it the intrigue, the history, or the action? It's all of these things.
But, most of all, I follow football for basically every aspect of it—from the players to the fans, from the dedication to a club to the World Cup.
I love it all.

Dorothy Willis—MMA
In the early 1990's, my sons and I began to watch MMA. The first matches had no time limits and were very ruthless, with far fewer rules than today's MMA. The reforms which have been made since then were much welcomed in my opinion, and helped to legitimize the sport in the eyes of the world.

As a sixty-three-year-old mother of two grown sons, who were involved in martial arts and both wrestled in high school, the grandmother of six children, four of whom have been in karate, and two grandsons who love the sport of wrestling—I have a special affinity for the sport of MMA.


Ever since the first time I saw Georges St-Pierre fighting in Canada and tried to understand what the French commentator was saying, I have known that MMA had become my favorite sport.
St-Pierre had "GRAND HOTEL" printed in black paint on his back at the fight, and put on an outstanding performance.
Watching him, even after he signed with the UFC, has been like watching a beautiful new type of combat dancing. He is so graceful and has such fine-tuned kinesthetic sense in knowing where his body is in relation to his opponent. He has no false starts and appears as if every move has been choreographed in order to have the most-devastating effect upon his opponents.
Since I was a Professional Physical Education major in college, I can fully appreciate how much conditioning and control it takes to perform on such a high level in every fight.
Seeing the human body in performance of Mixed Martial Arts can be very beautiful, and St-Pierre's moves never cease to amaze me.
Although other fighters, especially Anderson Silva, have come close to St-Pierre's style. Rush will continue to be my favorite fighter in my favorite sport.

Bob Warja—Baseball
This game sucks you in like a squeegee, fills you with hope and joy, then rips your heart out and makes you watch. Yes, that’s baseball, and I love it.

Watching a baseball game is much like riding a roller coaster; the highs and lows of the lead changing hands during a game is akin to the thrill of an amusement park.

It’s like a drug—as quickly as the high comes, you get the crash of reality spilling all over your favorite team.

And, ultimately, you are left at home watching someone else win the World Series.

Still, you enjoyed the ride.

Baseball is something handed down from father to son; something that becomes more than just a game and ends up becoming your best friend and worst enemy. All the while, you beg for more.

It’s the crack of the bat and the smell of the freshly cut grass. It’s the thrill of the big fly, and it’s the excitement of a pitcher’s duel.

It’s a thinking man’s game; one that seems slow and sleepy. Yet, it is always punctuated by strategy and intensity. It’s a game within a game.

It’s a quirky game, filled with superstition and steeped in tradition; and, occasionally—no matter how long you've been watching—you will see something you've never seen before.

There’s a long history filled with statistics that truly mean something; and it’s a marathon of a season so there is always hope regardless of how your favorite team did on a given day.

It’s athletic and graceful; yet, at the same time, it can be frustrating and maddening, But, it doesn’t matter because it’s baseball—the American pastime.

It’s simply the greatest game in the world.

If you are going to be in Las Vegas for the weekend of UFC 100 and want to squeeze in some extra MMA, then perhaps "Tuff" Girls" may be just what you’re looking for.

Taking place the night before the biggest event in MMA history, UFC 100, “Tuff Girls” will showcase amateur women fighters who could one day be competing with professional fighters like Gina Carano and Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos.

Tuff-N-Uff, the nation’s premiere amateur mixed martial arts organization, will present an all-female MMA card at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 10. “Tuff Girls” will be headlined by Barb Honchak and Las Vegan Meegan Thomas who will fight in the 125-pound weight class for the Tuff Girl Belt.

Barb Honchak has compiled an impressive record of 6-1, while her opponent Meegan Thomas is undefeated with three wins under her belt. The other bouts will feature battles in weight classes ranging from 105 pounds to the 170 pounds.

The state of woman's mixed martial arts is at a critical juncture with "Carano vs. Cyborg" just around the corner. In order to capitalize on the momentum of that event, it will need stars to rise up from the ranks and be the future of the sport.

And don't be surprised if you see some UFC fighters hanging around. Call it a hunch but we were also able to confirm it with VP of Tuff-N-Uff Jeff Myers who said it's not uncommon to spot your favorite male fighters in attendance.

Lesnar looks to exact revenge upon Mir, who holds the only win over Lesnar in his short career.

Whoever emerges will be known as the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion. As for the other fight, it’s an epic fight between two friends that is years in the making, with the winner most likely considered the top heavyweight in the sport today.

George St. Pierre-Alves vs. Renato Sobral-Gegard Mousasi

In another tough battle, we have a welterweight title fight going up against an exciting light heavyweight fight. St. Pierre is looking to defend his belt for the third time against an opponent in Alves who many consider his toughest test to date.

With a win, St. Pierre could position himself into a super fight with Anderson Silva.

Sobral is sharp veteran who most consider a top 10 light heavyweight fighter.

Mousasi is a young phenomenon who many consider to be the best young fighter in all of MMA. This will be Mousasi’s first official fight as both light heavyweight and in the United States. A win for him would catapult him into the consciousness of all MMA fans.

ANTHONY ASCUE: And we are joined here today with Bellator WW champion, Lyman Good. Lyman thank you very much for doing this.

LYMAN GOOD: Thank you for having me.

AA: Now you are born and raised in the city that never sleeps, the big apple, New York. Which is on the cross hairs of every MMA org and fan right now. That is on every MMA promoter’s Christmas list. I have to ask, what’s the MMA scene like in New York right now?

LG: As far as fan base goes I feel it’s starting to integrate. People are definitely starting to learn more about it and become educated in the sport and the rules. It’s definitely growing here.

AA: Do you feel as though mixed martial arts will have a solidified place in New York in the immediate future? I know that is what many promotions and people are trying to get accomplished right now.

LG: Yeah, I would think the next big change for MMA would be going to New York. It would be great for the sport and the city, and financially it would help the city out as well. So it’s something that definitely needs to and will happen.

AA: Well said, now you are a fighter in a city that doesn’t regulate the sport that you fight in. And with you and guys like Matt Serra being fighters in a city that doesn’t support the sport that you’re in, to you…what does it mean to be a fighter? And does it change anything for you at all to not get the home town support?

LG: To be honest, being a fighter means more to me than the actual fight itself. And wherever that fight may take place. Fights last 15-25 minutes and are a representation of every moment that you had to go through to get to where you are. That’s the fight.

But it’s all the things that you go through to get there that really boil down the core of the fighter. The discipline, the respect, the honor, the humility, every aspect that you’re instilled upon to get to the fight, that’s what being a fighter means to me. Everything else is secondary.

AA: Now of course you are one of MMA’s fastest rising stars. Your name is starting to get thrown around, and there’s a bit of a buzz starting to generate toward you. 10 straight wins, first ever Bellator WW champion, very impressive accolades for someone who is still under the age of 25.

Have you started to notice anything different about your career now that you’re starting to gain some public interest?

LG: Yeah. My last fight definitely got me a little notoriety as a fighter. But it’s not the be all, end all or anything. I do feel though that there is a difference in credibility between where I’m at now and where I was at the start of my career.

AA: Do you feel more pressure to put on better performances now with more eyes paying attention to you?

LG: I think so. But I also think it all depends on the fighter. Some fighters will let that bother them, some fighters won‘t. There’s always going to be pressure, it just depends on how you handle it. For me it’s just a matter of staying on the task at hand. It’s about me, my training and my opponent.

AA: And speaking about you, where do you feel you stand in the overall WW scheme of things? I mean ranking wise, where do you feel you stand right now?

LG: I don’t know, I want to say that I’m at the bottom, only because it’ll make me work harder to get to the top. But as far as rankings go, I don’t really pay much attention to that.

AA: Fair enough. And now to change gears a bit, as I understand, you’re not only a fighter but you’re a coach as well for a martial arts school in Manhattan, is that correct?

LG: Yes. That is correct.

AA: And how long have you been coaching for now?

LG: About three years now. It’s going on three.

AA: So what got you into coaching?

LG: It’s one of those things that early on as a student you start to learn the benefit of having a good coach. And in the process it makes you want to learn more from the community and give more back to the community as well.

AA: And how are things working out with the gym?

LG: It’s going good. Everyday we got new students coming in and acquiring about classes and wanting to enrol and learn more about martial arts. And the great thing about it is that it’s not always about fighting.

You know we get students of all caliber that come here to participate in martial arts for many reasons. Maybe it’s stress release, or to learn self defense, or to gain some confidence, so there’s many reasons.

And the great thing about what I do is now I get to give back all the teachings that was taught to me. You know all the things that I’ve learned I try to instill onto my students. So it’s very rewarding.

AA: And is this something that you see yourself doing after your fight career is over?

LG: Definitely. That’s both my short and long term goal in life. I always want to teach. Like I’ve said earlier, I always want to give back all the things that were given to me.

AA: Now it’s well documented that while growing up, you’ve had a bit of a rough childhood. And it was actually your mother that got you into martial arts, at a young age. I mean coming from your experience with all the things you’ve had to over come and go through as a kid, how did martial arts begin to change you as a person?

LG: Martial arts, I think, is really about the diligence of someone’s character. So for me, when I got off the streets and started training, there was just a lot of things that really tested me as a person. It’s a matter of learning and as a kid I learned a lot from martial arts, and from my mother.

I learned never to give up from my mom. And that lesson and mentality has really tested me as a person. It tested my tenacity to want to get better. It tested my patience. It tested me both as a person and as a fighter.

You know as much as being a fighter is both physical and mental, I believe that as human beings that we’re all mental and emotional creatures. So those lessons you learn that shape your character, definitely define you as a person in whatever it is you do with your life. For me it was fighting.

AA: And in the midst of all that training and evolution into adulthood, was there ever a moment where you felt that this was something that you could do as a living. That competing in martial arts and MMA was a viable option to financially support yourself?

LG: Yeah. The longer I kept doing this the more my path became clear to me. As I started getting better, I felt as though that I was good at it and this was what I had to be doing. Not just because I was good at it but because this was where my heart was at.

And you should always follow what your heart is leading you to. If your heart’s not into something you definitely shouldn’t be doing it.

AA: And when you came to this realization, and maybe even before, who were the guys that you looked up to? I mean as a young man, who were your role models that you saw and said, "That’s who I want to be like."

LG: To be honest, very few people. I’ve had very few role models in my life. It’s been written about me that I’ve had a very rough childhood and as far as role models go, I didn’t have many to look up to. But if there was one source of light that I had at the time, it would always be my mother.

She raised three kids on her own, she busted her ass and worked hard as hell just to make sure that we were fed, for at least that one day, at a time when we were getting tossed around from shelter to shelter.

I mean there was never any question or doubt about it, she always gave herself to us, and for me it was always like damn you know, where did she get that type of strength from?

AA: So with clearly all of the positive changes that your mother and martial arts have given you in your life, I mean what do you say to the parents and people that still look at a sport like MMA as a barbaric bloodsport and as a bad image for kids and society?

LG: I think they’re wrong. Completely. A lot of what goes into a fight, between the people who take part in one professionally, is heart and conditioning and sacrifice. It’s a lot of the things that make a person strong.

All this sport really is, is two people at their best being put against each other. It’s years and months of training for the opportunity to showcase your abilities and reward yourself for your hard work and sacrifices.

I don’t see it as barbaric at all.

AA: And speaking of people’s views on the sport, what do you think of the fans of MMA today? Do you feel that they’re progressing and evolving with the sport and learning what they should about it?

LG: Absolutely. Like I said earlier, I feel that MMA is definitely starting to integrate. It’s definitely more broadcasted, more advertised. People are getting more accustomed to it and they’re starting to learn more about it. Which is important because it helps them learn more about what goes into the fight. So yeah people are definitely learning more about the sport now.

AA: Now I think it’s safe to say that most casual MMA fans are mostly just familiar with the UFC. As they seem to be the flagship for mixed martial arts right now. What’s it like to fight in one of the organizations outside of the giant that is the Ultimate Fighting Championship?

Do you ever feel as though you’re fighting under their shadow?

LG: I wouldn’t say that I feel under their shadow, no. The UFC just has its course and notoriety for how long it’s been around. But fighting for the UFC and fighting outside of the UFC all lead you on the same road. It’s just a different course you’re taking to the end.

I mean in the UFC, you can have a fighter that has that credibility because he’s in that company, and it’s seen by an executive in the back that’s mulling over who is going to fight who and how they’re going to market it. And you have that versus a smaller org where maybe the fans are maybe more connected to the fighters in the bouts. And they know the backgrounds and story and you’re able to have a household name because of that.

I mean take Bellator for example. They’re a company that gives the fighters a lot of control. Then in the UFC, which I have nothing against, but over there I feel that it has more to do with strings being pulled, and who’s more famous and all that stuff. Compared to who really deserves it. You know, who really deserves that title shot.

AA: And with Bellator in mind, seeing organizations like Bellator, Affliction, Dream, StrikeForce, and whatever have you, seeing those organizations open up shop and put on big events, do you feel as though more MMA fans are starting to open their eyes to more MMA outside of the UFC?

LG: Yeah I do. I mean with all the new organizations opening up, you know if anything it creates great adversity between the fighters. And per organization with great fights and notoriety because of them, it singles out who is the best. Or at least the best in that organization. Which can create a household name.

And to the fans credit, they are doing a great job of getting to know more about the fighters and where they’re fighting in and who they’ve fought. So that knowledge can lead to more overall depth in talent and spawn more household names. Which is always good for business.

AA: And with that in mind, and speaking of household names, you yourself are at the cusp of possibly being one in the very near future. Certainly an organization like the UFC can help with that process. Tell me, what are your thoughts on possibly fighting for the UFC one day?

LG: I’m still thinking about that. It’s an ongoing thought process in my head as far as that being a possibility in my career. Right now I’m just taking it one step at a time.

To tie this in with one of the things I’ve said before, I’ll never be complacent. I’ll always put myself at the bottom because it makes me work that much harder to get to the top. So if the UFC is the pinnacle then I feel like I have time to achieve it. Like there’s always going to be time further down my career. For now I need to improve, and get better.

But when the time is right, it will definitely happen.

RALEIGH -- It looks like blob of wriggling pudding staring out through a single, puckered eye. You can see it caught on camera, clinging to the concrete pipes below Raleigh's Cameron Village: the Sewer Monster.

It's really a colony of prehistoric creatures known either as bryozoans or moss animacules, thousands of wormlike animals, biologists report. Clustered together in a glistening mass, they feed through tentacles on whatever floats past. More common in ponds, they have turned up in a set of sanitary sewer pipes under one of the country's oldest shopping centers.

Shacked up in a six-inch sewer main, the clusters of worms are about the size of a golf ball, estimates Ed Buchan, an environmental coordinator with the city. But the video footage, captured with a tiny, snakelike camera, makes the monster appear at man-eating size to viewers watching at home.

That may explain why a two-minute video tour of the Sewer Monster's lair has spread across the Web like flesh-eating bacteria, prompting nationwide cries of horror and disgust.

"Mystery Life Form in NC Sewer!" read one headline, followed by this comment: "It looks like meat. HEART MEAT!"

At Cameron Village on Wednesday evening, visitors were split into two groups: Those who had seen the sewer monster video and been horrified, and those who planned to Google it the minute they had the chance.

Maria Schmitt, Jeff Lepley and Annie Powell, all 21, were in the latter camp, but they quickly rectified that using Schmitt's iPhone.

"It looks like a brain or something," Schmitt said. "That's in the pipe?"

"I'm glad I don't live here," said Powell, a Houston native.

The trio immediately regretted their decision to watch the video before eating dinner at the Village Draft House.

"I'm glad I didn't order pasta," Schmitt said.

Raleigh Public Utilities Director Dale Crisp said the video was not shot by the city, but rather by a contractor hired by the property owner. Lynne Worth, property manager for Cameron Village, was out of the office on Wednesday and could not be reached for comment.

Crisp said the city first learned of the video several weeks ago when a link was sent to an employee in the stormwater division. Raleigh has two teams of employees whose sole task is to send tiny cameras into new and existing sewer lines and then review the footage for anything out of the ordinary.

This latest footage surprised even the professionals who thought they'd seen it all.

"I don't know if we've seen anything move on its own inside a sanitary sewer line," Crisp said. But shop owners in Cameron Village only laughed, especially those at North American Video, which has an impressive horror film collection.

This isn't the first time a bryozoan has ventured inside a sewer pipe. Denver's utility workers discovered some last year but opted to leave them alone. So far, said Mitch Terry, of the city's water and sanitation district, the weird cluster of creatures hasn't clogged anything.

Bryozoans are harmless, said Thomas Kwak, biologist at N.C. State University. He likened them to coral or anemone, retracting when they are disturbed, catching what they can. If they were to take on the qualities of a Sewer Monster, it would be a very slow attack. Bryozoans move at a rate of 1 to 10 centimeters a day, Kwak said.

"They can get as big as the size of a watermelon," he said.

If the city found such an infestation, Crisp said, it would clear it quickly.

"Anything other than water, human waste and toilet paper and you run the risk of having a blockage created by any debris, whether it's a sack of worms or anything else," he said.

M-1 Challenge, billed as the “World Cup of Mixed Martial Arts,” is a team-based competition which features a series of events around the world where MMA clubs from different countries compete against each other. Each team consists of five athletes with one in each weight class ranging from lightweight to heavyweight. Teams are placed in Group A though Group D.

The latest destination for this weekend’s competition is Seoul Korea where six different teams are in action. The slated match-ups pit Bulgaria (1-1) vs. Finland (1-1), USA West (2-0) vs. Imperial Russia (0-2), and Brazil Naja (1-1) vs. Korea.

The M-1 challenge operates as a global minor league MMA system, and if successful, fighters can work their way to the main stage of the sport like past M-1 fighters Fedor Emelianenko, Andrei Arlovski, Keith Jardine, Alistair Overeem, Yushin Okami, Ben Rothwell, Mike Pyle, Melvin Manhoef, Denis Kang, Martin Kampmann, and others have done.

With that said, lets take a look at five of the individual matches which feature fighters who could be headed to a major MMA organization in the not too distant future.



Welterweight Fight: Janne Tulirinta (Finland/11-3) vs. Ivan Ivanov (Bulgaria/5-2)

Tulirinta is even better then his his 11-3 indicates. Already a talented submission fighter, Tulirinta’s standup game has made remarkable strides this season and is the best welterweight in this year’s M-1 Challenge. With the welterweight division outside of the UFC lacking, Tulirinta could be ready now.

Tulirinta did not suffer a scratch during his 11 second TKO over USA East’s Anthony Ford just 30 days ago. Ivanove is a legitimate threat and with the win for Tulirinta will put himself in a position to take his career to the next stage.



Middleweight Fight: Giva Santana (USA West/12-1) vs. Radmir Gabdullin (Russia Imperial/4-1)

12 of Santana’s 11 wins are via armbar submission. “The Arm Collector” is looking to add to that list and take Gabdullin’s arm back home with him to Team Oyama in Orange County, Calif. But with a strong Sambo background and all four of his pro wins coming via submission, Santana will not have an easy time on the ground.

As such, don’t be surprised we if we see some of Santana’s improving standup, as his striking skills have begun to evolve thanks to a lot of sparring with USA West heavyweight Shane Del Rosario. With a another submission win, Satanta would make a nice addition to the Strikeforce Middleweight division.



Heavyweight Fight: Shane Del Rosario (USA West/6-0) vs. Maksim Grishin (Russia Imperial/2-2)

After competing for ShoXC and once for the M-1 Challenge, Del Rosario finds himself with a perfect 6-0 record and a reputation for being one of the most dynamic strikers in the heavyweight division. A member of Colin Oyama’s Team Oyama, Del Rosario has been working hard with Giva Santana to improve his ground game.

If his submission skills can rival his standup ability Del Rosario will move one step closer in his evolution from a top heavyweight prospect to a legitimate title contender. A win there could send Del Rasario into a high profile fight under the Affliction or Strikeforce banner.

But a win over Grishin is hardly a given, as he is rates as one of the best prospects coming up in the new generation of Team Imperial fighters.



Lightweight Fight : Hacran Dias (Brazil Naja/11-0-1) vs. Yui Chul Nam (South Korea/12-2)

Hacran Dias is one of the best blue chip prospects fighting out of Brazil fight now. With a record of 11-0-1, Dias is good enough to compete in any organization in the world right now. A Nova Uniao fighter, Dias made his M-1 Challenge debut in May during an event in Sao Paulo.

Facing fellow M-1 Challenge rookie Amirkhan Mazihov, Dias needed just 3:58 to finish the fight courtesy of a rear naked choke. Dias will look to improve his M-1 Challenge record to 2-0 and if successful the sky appears to the the limit for his undefeated prospect.

Nam has a impressive record but is looking to record his first M-1 Challenge win following his decision loss to USA West’s Dave Jansen during the ‘09 season opener. Being that Jansen is one of the top lightweight prospects in all of MMA, there is no shame in losing to Jansen, and with an upset win over Dias, Nam will be right back in the mix.



Welterweight Fight: Do Hyung Kim (Korea/25-5) vs. Eduardo Pamplona (Brazil Naja/11-2)

Kim is one of the most charismatic fighters in all of the M-1 Challenge Kim is a tremendous fighter who without question rates as one of the top prospects in this year’s competition. The Sunhu Gym product holds notable victories in his career over the likes of Mikhail Malyutin, Erik Oganov, and Farouk Lakebir.

Kim is moving up to 170 for what looks on paper to be an amazing matchup against Pamplona. With just one loss in his last 12 fights, Pamplona is looking to take his career to the next level following impressive wins over notables such as Juliano Belgine, Daniel Acacio, Jose “Pele” Landi-Jons, and Jorge Pantino. A win over Kim could be exactly what he needs.





Lightweight Fight: Dave Jansen (USA West/11-0) vs. Amirkhan Mazikhov (Russia Imperial/2-1)

Rising lightweight prospect David Jansen improved to 11-0 following his hard fought decision victory over Yui Chul Nam during April's M-1 Challenge event in Japan. This Team Quest member has already fought three times this year capturing notable wins having over Matt Lee and Flavio Alvaro.

Jansen wasn’t originally part of the 2009 roster with Palace Fighting Championships 155 lb. champion Brian Cobb listed as its lightweight representative. However, Cobb left USA West just ten days prior to the M-1 Challenge season opener on Feb. 21 in order to accept a contract with the UFC as a last-minute replacement at UFC 95.

The last-minute move from Cobb to Jansen has paid dividends for USA West, as Cobb was TKO’d by Terry Etim at UFC 95 and has not fought since. This isn’t an article designed to trash Brock Lesnar.

This is an indictment of his championship status based on a multiple things.

This is an indictment of the UFC for putting him in this position and, in my opinion, taking some of the luster away from their own heavyweight title. I have felt this way for a while, but I read something this morning that made it necessary for me to vent.

In a recent editorial by Michael DiSanto on UFC.com, he comments on the upcoming Mir/Lesnar fight and states this:

“The interim champion is so far superior to Lesnar on a technical level in every aspect of the game, other than wrestling, that it is a bit disturbing. But for Lesnar’s freakish physical gifts, he would stand no chance against an amazing technician like Mir.”

That statement alone is a major part of my issue, but before we get into that I want to look at a few other items.



Did Lesnar deserve his title shot?

This is one of the biggest points of contention for a lot of people. Regardless, Lesnar is the UFC Heavyweight Champion, and to this point has won 75 percent of his four fights.

Impressive? Maybe. Let’s look a little deeper.

Lesnar started off his career in K-1 against a Min-Soo Kim. Lesnar won this fight and gave Kim his fourth loss in as many fights. Kim is obviously not a world beater, but no one would expect a fighter to take on a champion in their first fight.

It wasn’t an amazing victory, but it was a victory. Lesnar at this point was 1-0 and got signed by the UFC to be the next big thing.

Dana White obviously had high hopes for Lesnar, matching him up against Frank Mir in his UFC debut. A win over a former champion like Mir would catapult him up the ranks towards a title shot.

Lesnar didn’t win. Mir caught him in a submission and dragged his record down to 1-1.

Many would consider this a significant setback for a fighter on the way up the ranks. White did not.

Brock’s next fight came against Heath Herring, who the UFC is now calling a “contender” in the prefight hype. I don’t know where this “contender” talk comes from, and I don’t what he is contending for.

Fact is, “The Texas Crazy Horse” hasn’t won back to back fights since 2004, and while he has lost to some of the best in the world, his most notable wins are probably Cheick Congo or maybe Evan Tanner back in 1997.

Lesnar did win this fight, and was impressive in doing so, but is that enough for a title shot?

Not in my books. Herring would not have earned himself a title shot with the win.

The UFC is very thin in the heavyweight division, and Brock can sell pay-per-views. That is why he got a shot so early. Anyone who argues against TUF should have an even bigger issue with Lesnar’s status.



Does winning the Heavyweight Title alleviate these concerns?

A lot of people who support Lesnar will argue that he beat Couture, and that proves him as a champion.

I am not buying it.

Beating Couture is his most (only) notable victory of his young career, but it wasn’y shocking and it wasn’t an upset.

You were kidding yourself if you didn’t see Lesnar winning that fight. Lesnar is huge, and his size cannot be ignored. Everybody always gives Randy a chance, but he didn’t have much of one that night.

Remember, Couture spent a huge portion of his career at 205 pounds, which is probably his optimum fighting weight. He moved back up because he saw an opportunity in a soft division.

How can we call it a major upset or accomplishment when 285-pound Lesnar (and I am being generous) beats a 45 year old, 220-pound Randy Couture?

Age aside, that is a 65-five pound differential!

For your reference, 70 pounds is the difference between a lightweight and a heavyweight.



What does it take to be a champion?

MMA has become so widespread, and the techniques have become so varied and technical, that we are seeing highly tuned “Martial Artists” compete for titles.

Fighters like GSP, who have shown amazing levels of dedication and put in years upon years of training (in many fighting styles) to reach the pinnacle of the sport.

Fighters like Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida that have worked and developed their own unique brand of striking, that nobody can solve, to become world class superstars.

Fighters like BJ Penn and Fedor that will take on any challenger in a moment’s notice, plus have the striking and ground skills to dominate wherever the fight goes.

That brings us to Brock.

He does not have the background of a martial artist. MMA wasn’t his first choice. Heck, it wasn’t even his second choice.

Yes, he had a very impressive collegiate wrestling career, but he hadn’t participated in any sort of legit wrestling competition since the year 2000. That is seven years before he started in MMA.

The other champions have very impressive backgrounds, while Lesnar has wrestling, plus he has big and athletic.

Wow! That is quite the pedigree.



The new form of BBJ!

The fact that the UFC has Lesnar learning on the job, while holding their most prestigious title, seems wrong to me.

I think it is an insult to the fighters that have put in the work. I think it is insulting to the fighters that have put their life into MMA and dedicated themselves to being true mixed martial artists.

When the sport has reached an era of experts, elite fighters, and true mixed martial artists, Brock sets it back. He isn’t about a refined skill set—he is about being the biggest and being athletic.

In other words, he is an MMA freak show, and that doesn’t seem right to me.

How can this be fixed? If Mir can pull off a win on July 11, it will be a step in the right direction.

If he can pull the upset, Lesnar will be proven to be a second-rate fighter. Mir is a huge underdog, though, and as much as I want Mir to win, I know a victory is less than likely.

Brock is just too big. No, not too skilled. Just too big.

Does anyone else agree that this takes the “art” out of Mixed Martial Arts?

I suppose you can argue that Lesnar is the creator of a new style of BBJ. Let’s call it “being big jitsu”.

Is this what the heavyweight title is coming too?

Bobby Lashley is starting to make some noise. Some people are hyping him up as the next big thing. He too is a master of “being big jitsu”.

He may not have fought the same level of competition, but I don’t believe Lesnar has proven himself a great deal more. Whether you agree or not, someone that big and that strong with a solid wrestling base will always be hard to beat.



Where does Brock belong?

With athletes the size of Lesnar and Lashley coming into the mix, the MMA world will have to make adjustments.

I think the only logical step is to add a super heavyweight division. There may not be enough fighters now, but in time there will be.

The fact is, Lesnar is not a heavyweight, and he shouldn’t be fighting guys that are 220 to 230 pounds for titles. Whether the UFC or MMA in general make the distinction, Lesnar is a super heavyweight, and is in a class of his own.

If Lesnar beats Mir, who is next? Does Randy have a chance in a rematch? Can Big Nog beat him? If not, what happens to fighters their size?

Is this the end of the heavyweight division as we know it?

Like all of you, I'm prone to this kind of activity myself, taking it one step further with an actual list of up and comers at the start of 2009 while I was writing for another site.

Now that we've reached the midway point of the calendar year, I've gone back to that original list and made some revision. Not that I was too far off the mark or anything; actually, I've had a pretty solid year of prospecting.

Outside of Jake Rosholt, who suffered from the folding of the WEC Middleweight division and a sudden step up in competition, most of the list have done pretty well.

Actually, most of the revision come from guys succeeding and no longer really qualifying as prospects. After all, how can I rightfully call Eddie Alvarez a prospect after the display he put on during the Bellator Fighting Championships or give Brock Lesnar top billing when he has the UFC Heavyweight title around his waist?

I still think neither has reached their ceiling, but they're too well known for prospect status anymore.

There are, however, an ever-expanding crop of up-and-comers willing to step in where Rosholt fell off and Lesnar and Alvarez departed. These are my picks for the best prospects in Mixed Martial Arts today. As always, I look forward to your thoughts and recommendations in the comments.



10. Ben Askren

I'm hesitant about tossing another former collegiate champion with limited experience into the 10 spot again, as this is where Rosholt landed in the original incarnation. This one, like the selection of Rosholt previously, is completely predicated on Askren staying away from the name-brand organizations while he builds up his skills.

If he takes his time and adds to his impressive wrestling pedigree, he could be a star in a couple of years.



9. Luis Cane

Very much a known commodity after three impressive wins in the UFC, I truly believe the 28-year-old Brazilian can continue to climb the ladder in the Light-Heavyweight division.

His lone loss in the Octagon came via DQ for a knee to a downed opponent (James Irvin) and he looked great in dismantling Jason Lambert, Sokoudjou and Steve Cantwell. While he's currently the odd man out at 205—everyone else seemingly has an opponent lined up—Cane is in the mix and only a couple good wins away from talks of a title shot.



8. Gray Maynard

Another holdover from my original list, "The Bully" has since added another win to his undefeated record and earns extra attention through Frankie Edgar's win over Sean Sherk at UFC 98.

While some dislike Maynard's heavy reliance on his wrestling skills—you know, the old lay and pray—grinding out wins over quality opponents while continuing to improve the other areas of your game is okay by me.

September will be a serious test for the former Michigan State Spartan, as Maynard has been matched up against the returning Roger Huerta at Fight Night 19.



7. Blagoi Ivanov

Normally, guys who have never taken part in a Mixed Martial Arts fight would not make a list like this, but these are not normal circumstances. Anyone who beats Fedor Emelianenko at anything will garner my attention, whether it's Tic-Tac-Toe, a game of Gin or a Combat Sambo as Ivanov did back in November.

The day after Fedor takes on Josh Barnett at Affliction: Trilogy, Ivanov will make his debut at Sengoku 9 against veteran Kazuyuki Fujita. We'll find out very quickly if Ivanov has what it takes.



6. Anthony "Rumble" Johnson

I think Anthony Johnson has what it takes to one day be the UFC Welterweight Champion. That being said, he's not there yet. He's displayed outstanding striking and I loved the aggression he showed the second time around with Kevin Burns, but right now, he is able get by simply on athleticism and it will take more than that to become a champion.

I look for Johnson to take a step up in competition (Dustin Hazelett, Brock Larson) before the year is over.



5. Chris Horodecki

Maybe I'm a little biased because he's Canadian and from London, the last Ontario city I called home before becoming a West Coast kid. Or maybe Horodecki deserves to be on this list, thanks to his 13-1 record including wins over Ryan Schultz and Bart Palaszewski. Why don't we wait and see what happens at Affliction: Trilogy when "The Polish Hammer" takes on Dan Lauzon before making our final decision?



4. Josh Grispi

He's not yet 21, he's 13-1 and riding a three-fight win streak in the WEC with wins over Mark Hominick, Micah Miller and Jens Pulver, the last of which took just 33 seconds. What's not to like? The crazy thing is that Grispi isn't even the best prospect in the division...



3. Jose Aldo

That honor belongs to Aldo, who needed just eight seconds to split Cub Swanson's eyebrow open and close the book on their fight at WEC 41. The Brazilian sensation is just 22 and has decimated five consecutive opponents under the WEC banner.

We might find out real quickly if Aldo is as impressive as he's looked thus far, as many believe he will be the next challenger for Mike Thomas Brown's featherweight title.



2. Cain Velasquez

Personally, I think the Cheick Kongo fight was a bit of a step backwards for Velasquez, and I really don't like the matchup against Shane Carwin at UFC 104 either. But sometimes you have to take a step backwards before you can charge ahead.

Velasquez has all the talent in the world and he will surely continue to improve his striking. If he were a light heavyweight, he'd be afforded an opportunity to come along at a more reasonable pace, a la Luis Cane.

But the lack of strong competition and noteworthy contenders in the heavyweight ranks will force Velasquez to face a tougher challenge sooner than others.



1. Jon Jones

Where Velasquez looked just average against a veteran like Cheick Kongo, Jones looked outstanding against "The American Psycho" Stephan Bonnar at UFC 94. Yes, he also looked gassed by the end of things, but check the picture that led off this piece.

Dude broke out a belly-to-back suplex against a veteran like Bonnar, not to mention several other impressive throws and an assortment of spinning elbows and precise strikes. There are still elements he needs to work on - stamina being No. 1 in my books—but "Bones" has as bright a future as anyone in the business.

90. Kendall Grove
UFC Record: 5-2
Victories Over: Alan Belcher, Evan Tanner, Jason Day

I can already hear the Nate Diaz fans calling me every name in the book for having the pride of Stockton below the winner of The Ultimate Fighter, Season 3. Grove was actually pretty close to being bounced from the UFC after consecutive losses, but strong wins over the late Evan Tanner and Jason "Dooms" Day showed he deserved to stay in the UFC and earned him a place at #90.

89. Thales Leites
UFC Record: 5-2
Victories Over: Pete Sell, Nate Marquardt, Drew McFedries

Proving that fighting in a title fight recently doesn't automatically vault you up the rankings, Leites' only win over a top tier opponent is against Marquardt, which truthfully was more of a loss for Nate the Great than a win for Leites.

88. Brandon Vera
UFC Record: 6-3
Victories Over: Justin Eilers, Assuerio Silva, Frank Mir

We all know Vera is where he is today because of that win over Mir, a brutal beating that lasted less than 90 seconds and propelled "The Truth" into getting his ass handed to him by Tim Sylvia and Fabricio Werdum. Other than the wins mentioned above, he's beaten no one of consequence. If it wasn't for the UFC's desire to expand into the Filipino market, Vera would be gone.

87. Luis Cane
UFC Record: 3-1
Victories Over: Jason Lambert, Sokoudjou, Steve Cantwell

Now here is a guy who could rocket up this list in the next couple years. His three wins inside the Octagon are all solid wins—Lambert is tough as nails and holds a win over Babalu, Sokoudjou strong as the come (for the first round) and Cantwell looked great in his debut. He's currently the odd man out in the LHW picture, but that won't last for long.

86. Cheick Kongo
UFC Record: 7-3
Victories Over: Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, Mostapha Al-Turk, Antoni Hardonk

You would think seven wins in the UFC including one over Cro Cop would get you higher up this list? You would think that... Truth is, the Cro Cop who came to the UFC wasn't the same lethal Cro Cop we all loved in Pride, and really not a single guy that Kongo has defeated made their way onto this list. Not even Cro Cop.

85. Cain Velasquez
UFC Record: 5-0
Victories Over: Jake O'Brien, Denis Stojnic, Cheick Kongo

Another member of the 80s ensemble who could certainly climb the ladder in a hurry, Velasquez needs a couple more notable wins to have me completely sold on his future. I think he's got the goods, but I also think he's a year or two away from being dominant. Don't even get me started on the UFC's decision to put him in the cage with Shane Carwin at UFC 104.... brutal!

84. Roger Huerta
UFC Record: 6-1
Victories Over: Jason Dent, Leonard Garcia, Clay Guida

I don't care about Sports Illustrated covers (unless they're mine) and I don't care about a balls-to-the-wall style that makes for exciting fights. Huerta has beaten a guy who was just on TUF 9 (Dent), a featherweight (Garcia) and Clay Guida amongst his six UFC wins. Guida is solid, but he came awful close to losing that fight don't forget. We'll see what happens when he gets in the cage with "The Bully" Gray Maynard at Fight Night 19 in September.

83. Nick Diaz
UFC Record: 6-4
Victories Over: Robbie Lawler, Drew Fickett, Gleison Tibau

Listen, Diaz is a much better fighter now than he was in the UFC and so hold onto your complaints. He was just a kid and just figuring it all out, as was Lawler when they met at UFC 47. And it's not like he lost to stiffs either - Karo Parisyan, Diego Sanchez, Joe Riggs and Sean Sherk make up his four losses. Bring him back to the UFC and watch him climb this list.

82. Hermes Franca
UFC Record: 6-4
Victories Over: Caol Uno, Jamie Varner, Spencer Fisher

Before you start booing me, his losses are to Frankie Edgar, Sean Sherk, Yves Edwards and Josh "The Punk" Thomson. The win over Uno came just after he fought BJ Penn to a draw for the Lightweight title, Jamie Varner hasn't lost since and Spencer Fisher will be making an appearance a little later. He may have crazy hair, but Franca is legit.

81. Fabricio Werdum
UFC Record: 2-2
Victories Over: Gabriel Gonzaga, Brandon Vera

The record may be 50/50 but the competition was always stiff, as Werdum's two losses are to Andrei Arlovski and Junior dos Santos. Despite recent events, Arlovski was still dangerous at UFC 70 and dos Santos landed a killer punch that put him on the fast track to stardom. And that's just his losses. Personally, I wish the UFC had kept Werdum around as he would make an excellent "prove yourself" opponent for some of the young up and comers.

Imagine if in addition to the aforementioned a fighter also had to worry about being fired for losing. That means you lose your job, your source of income. So what would the most viable solution be?

To fight to win, not to finish. The difference being that fighting a bit safer taking less risk if it's within the fighters ability to do so is fighting to win. Not going for the finish and just looking for the points to get a solid decision victory is a means to keep one employed.

This doesn't really concern the upper echelon of fighters in the UFC. Guys such as George St. Pierre, Anderson Silva, Brock Lesnar, BJ Penn, Rich Franklin, Randy Couture, and those with such drawing power needn't concern themselves with such issues.

They are far too valuable an asset to let go for a few losses, especially if it means the competition would profit by signing say a Chuck Lidell. Yet at times when one recalls the debacle of Anderson Silva versus Thales Leites it would appear that Silva was playing it safe looking to win not to finish.

However, if you are one of the many struggling in the undercards, making $5,000 or less a fight, you could easily find yourself in the cross hairs of the firing gun.

So does the fear of being terminated in addition to other factors leave the fans with fighters who are less willing to put it all on the line and go for the finish? There is no concrete proof of this, but time will tell, and with more fights becoming tentative battles one must wonder if the attempted tactic of fear has indeed become the double edged sword it usually is.

"You better win or your fired" might drive some to go for broke and risk it all in a glorious brawl. However, it's far more likely that a fighter finds the ways to win with less risk to himself and his paycheck. Think about it if you knew that one method would ensure you are employed and the alternative risked termination: Which would you choose?

That question is rhetorical, especially in such uncertain times and tough economic hardships. With all the responsibility fighters must concern themselves with to perform their job, the added stress of being put out of work cannot be helpful.
