Stanford hired Bob Bowlsby primarily because he's a great fund raiser. It would be my guess that, behind the scenes, he's working very hard to get wrestling scholarships fully endowed there. |
Obviously there isn't one easy answer. Things are more complex than ever. There is the ever present title ix issue that underlies everything.
A school like Maryland was able to add women's teams when football finally had success and more people paid to attend games.
That allowed the wrestling alumni and friends to show how important OUR sport is by adding more scholarships in a 4 year period than any other sport in the department.
As Fan indicates, one of our next efforts will be reaching out to our older alumni, many of whom were terribly alienated by long time coach Sully Krouse, to bring them into the fold and hopefully begin to endow scholarships.
We're also trying to get our club team up and running as a viable entity. All the while trying to increase interest in the team among the more casual local fans. But we've now got a pretty good "product" to sell in College Park with
Hudson Taylor,
Mike Letts, a bunch of other very giid wrestlers, new coach Kerry McCoy, and great coaching staff. Everyone loves a winner and more people should jump aboard because of that.
It's been a long hard climb to get where we are......
