Default Please explain the RPI

I'm curious....If wrestler A is 22-3 and his 3 losses are to 3 wrestlers with comparable winning pct's, is his RPI higher/same/lower than wrestler B, who is also 22-3, against the exact same wrestlers, but his 3 losses were to wrestlers with losing records? How does it work?

It is based on 3 things:
1: your winning %
2: your opponents' winning %
3: your opponents' opponents' winning %.

So based on your example, both guys had the same winning percent (1), and since they wrestled the same guys, #2 and #3 are the same, so same RPI.

Based on that example, shouldn't criteria 3 be different?

If wrestler A loses to 3 guys with statistically equal or better records, and wrestler B's losses were to statistically worse opponents, wouldn't wrestler B have a slightly lower RPI because of those losses?

I barely passed the required stats class (go liberal arts!), but I would imagine that statistically better would carry more weight than statistically worse.

If it doesen't, then no one sholud complain about the alooted qualifiers from the previous system. Because then technically, you could have a few tiers of wrestlers with all the same RPI's. especially if programs start decreasing.

Or I could go put my english degree to good use and leave the math to Adults.

Your guess (based on your admitted performance in statistics) is correct.

I still think they would have the same RPI.

Wrestler A's record is 22-3 for a winning percent of 88% or .880
Let's say Wrestler A's opponents have a combined winning percent of 85% or .850
Let's say Wrestler A's opponents' opponents have a combined winning percent of 90% or .900
Wrestler A has an RPI of (0.25*.880) + (0.5*.850) + (0.25*.900) = .870

Wrestler B's record is 22-3 for a winning percent of 88% or .880
Wrestler B had the same opponents as Wrestler A, who have a combined winning percent of 85% or .850
Wrestler B's opponents' opponents are the same as Wrestler A's opponents' opponents, who have a combined winning percent of 90% or .900
Wrestler B has an RPI of (0.25*.880) + (0.5*.850) + (0.25*.900) = .870

Wrestler A's losses were to better guys (on average) than Wrestler B's losses, but that means A's wins were against worse guys (on average) than Wrestler B's.

It's not very likely that there will be many (or even two) wrestlers with the exact same RPI. The only reason it is the same here is because the two wrestlers had the exact same record and wrestled the exact same number of matches against the exact same guys.

Yeah, but I can read Olde English. Which is twice as dead of a language than Latin and Sandscrit. So there. Math jerk.

That makes sense actually. What I forgot to take into account is that Wrestler B would have 3 more quality wins than wrestler A who had better losses. If one can have a better loss.

Yeah, I can't stay out of a good math problem (or a bad one for that matter). It's like crack to me. Me and Euclid are tight.

Sure, it works that way if winning percentage was the sole criteria, but it isn't. The quality of the competition matters, therefore the wrestler losing to lower quality talent will have a lower rating.

It is pretty rare for two wrestlers at the same weight class to have an identical RPI rating.

A couple of things to remember when looking at the RPI it only factors in Division I matches at the weight class the wrestler is competing at in the post-season. In addition, the wrestler must have had a minimum number of matches and his opponents as well.
