I wonder who Iowa gets to replace Hand?

Faust, Fullhart, or Mocco, maybe. Could Mark Perry or Luedke step in as a volunteer coach?

I'd love to see Fullhart finally "come home". I've watched him wrestle from junior in high school to his Northern Plains title this year.

Many Iowa fans believe that if Mark Perry is on the staff his brother will come to Iowa - not really a solid reason to hire a guy. During the Gable tenure it seemed like the most success came when there was an assistant that "balanced" Gable - jRob, Johnson and Z. That little slump in the late '80s came with Barry "in the room". He was just too much like Gable. The beauty of hiring Perry would be that he would put that same kind of balance on the current Hawk staff. It's the Disney Mickey/Arthur management theory.

But Perry would hardly be a big guy on the staff. Does Mocco training in IC signal something?

Has Perry been around the Iowa wrestling room since NCAA's? In the interview he gave as he came off the mat from his final match, he made it fairly clear that at that point he wasn't very interested in continuing with wrestling. I think he mentioned something about going back home to work for a relative, and then even mentioned an interest in working for the Secret Service.

The "balancing" of the coaching staff is interesting. Why was it more effective to have balance that way, vs. having an entire staff of Gable clones?

I like Mark but would only want him to be our coach if it meant that Chris would come to Iowa. I also think that is a poor way to pick a coach. I would not be dissapointed if Fullhart filled the position. He has def put his timein on the mat to deserve consideration. I really like the idea of getting Mocco to fill the position. What would be better than having the current olympic representative coaching your big guys? Recruits would love a chance at training with one of the best in the world. It would also be a big finger waayyy up high in the airto the cowboys! That would be my favorite part about the prodical son comming home.

The Disney management theory says that the most successful organizations have a personality and skill balance within the leadership - everyone can't be the same if you want sustained sucess. Applying that to the Gable days may well be a figment of my imagination. But it also seems that jRob and Marty Morgan are different personality types - the same with Cael and Hartung (yes - I know that Hartung left).

Zadick and Schwab are too much like Brands. In theory, at least one of the new guys ought to offer that balance. Maybe that guy is Fullhart and maybe it's Mocco - and maybe I'm full of crap.

GG- That makes sense. But now that I think about it, previous differences in management/coaching styles also seem to have possibly caused problems and riffs in the past (I'm referring to rumors of bad blood between head coach Z and his followers, and asst. Brands and his followers).

Also, regarding Hands' departure, wouldn't they replace an upper weight coach with another upper weight coach? Or not necessarily?

They would definitely be looking for someone in the upper weights. Mike Faust is the strength and conditioning coach and he is a heavy weight.

There was definitely a difference of opinions between Brands and Z.

On a lighter note:
  • As a wrestler, Wes was always gea at hand fighting.
  • Let's give Wes a hand for a job well done at Iowa.
  • I got to hand it to Wes, he did his best at Iowa.
  • Let's face it, guys, Wes has to play his best hand and move on.
  • I think that we should all give Wes a helping hand at trying to acclimate himself into a new position.
