Wes Hand returned to the Iowa wrestling program two years ago with designs of helping lead the Hawkeyes back to the level they reached before his departure.
Hand is leaving Iowa again with the Hawkeyes sitting at the top of the college wrestling pedestal.
The 32-year-old, who wrestled on four NCAA championship teams at Iowa and spent this past season as an assistant coach on the school's first national title team since he was a senior in 2000, is departing to "pursue other interests," according to a statement released Tuesday by the Iowa sports information department.
"The Iowa wrestling program has made monumental strides in the last two years, and Wes Hand has been a big part of our march to a national title," Iowa coach
Tom Brands said in the statement. "We wish him the very best in the future."
Hand was a two-time All-American during his career with the Hawkeyes and an NCAA runner-up in 2000. He launched his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Iowa before taking a job in 2002 at Virginia Tech as an assistant to ex-Hawkeye Keith Mourlam and stayed with the Hokies when Brands took over the Virginia Tech program in 2004 before they both returned to Iowa two years ago.
"I would like to thank all the athletes, staff, administration and alumni I've been associated with during my athletic and coaching career at Iowa," Hand said in the statement. "It's been a privilege to be part of such a great athletic program and University."
Hand's departure leaves Brands with two assistant openings to fill, though interim assistant
Doug Schwab would be a probable candidate to get one position. The Hawkeyes promoted Schwab from a volunteer assistant role last fall when
Dan Gable stepped down from the Iowa staff.
"We have some pretty good in-house people," Brands said. "We have strong applicants in house, and we have some strong applicants coming in from the outside as well."
