Each bracket will be a 33-man bracket at the NCAA Tournament

Their will be a 110 Automatic Bids given to each of the qualifying tournament champions.

An additional 140-170 bids will be allocated prior to the qualfying tournaments. The wrestling committee will set a threshold and look at these three factors.

1. Winning Percentage
2. RPI Rank
3. Coaches Poll Rank

If you meet 2 of the 3 standards you earn a bid for your qualfifying tournament at that weight class. So you might see at a tournament 125 with 2bids, 133 with 4 and then 141 with 1.

Following the qualifying tournaments, the NCAA Wrestling Committee will meet in person to allocated the remaining bids to round out the 33-man brackets.

Good, it appears I was wrong about the absence of having national wildcards awarded after conference tourneys. Although holding back 50 qualifying spots does somewhat diminish the importance of conference tourneys.

Seeing who the committee chooses will generate a ton of discussion.

The NCAA Wrestling Committee did a good job of coming up witha plan that met the NCAA mandate while maintaining the importance of the qualifying tournaments. They were able to come up with a plan that got away from the NCAA cookie cutter model which would have seen 110 spots allocated by the conference champion then the remaining 220 spots decided by a committee following all the qualifiers.

What if the number of wrestlers that meet two of those criteria are more than 33 in a weight class?

The pre-assigned will probably be 25-28 per weight class so the threshold will be set to ensure those approximate numbers.

Following the tournament the committee has a number of criteria items that will see if a person will get placed on the board for possible selection. From there the committee will review updated RPI and winning percentage along with wins against wrestlers receiving automatic qualification, head to head matches amongst wrestlers up for consideration, common opponents, last ten matches and placement at their qualifying event will be reviewed as well.

The remaining spots will be handpicked by the committe to ensure there is 33 per field.

Negative. I was talking about how some guys(in the old system), if mildly injured, would choose to injury default to 6th in the bigten, since they'd already qualified (bigten took top 7 automatically). Seeding has nothing to do with it. It is a simple tactical decision to keep a guy from getting injured further, since the real goal, is simply to advance out of the conference tourney.

None of which really means much now, since we've had the system clarified.

Thanks for the explanations. It looks like they've gotten a good balance of keeping conference tourney's important, while leaving room to ensure that more of the best 33 in each weight make it into the bracket.
