Very disappointing, and would be even more so if it was even remotely surprising.

The entire athletics department at that school is woefully mismanaged and the wrestling team has been getting the shortend of that mismanagement especially over the last couple of years.

If this really is the end of the program and they can't some how salvage it all I can think is that I hope Matt Cathell finds a good home somewhere.

Del State is not going to be only program where the APR is going to be cited.

Life's not the breaths you take, the breathing in and out that gets you through the day ain't what it's all about. It's the moments that take your breath away.

I had heard this was likely a few weeks ago, that they weren't scheduling any matches for next year because they were expecting the axe at any time. Depressing.

Well when our sport is lightyears behind in marketing, running our programs the right way and stability, what do you expect?

This has been happening for decades now and we still just sit on our asses and do nothing.

We will be nothing more than some recreational club sport where we sometimes practice 3 days a week, sometimes show up for practice, practice on old aerobic mats and every now and them compete for "national" title of some sorts.

So you are saying women's crew, field hockey, womens lacrosse, water polo, etc., to a great job of marketing? It isn't about marketing. There is a common cause for the losses over the past decades. And that is what most have sat on their rear ends and done nothing about.

He wasn't referring to your son, or any Del. St. wrestler for that matter. He was saying what wrestling will turn into if schools keep dropping as they do. I realize you're upset, ubi, but read the whole post before ripping into somebody, mmmkay?

I'm very disappointed with Del. State, but I'm not surprised.

I could care less about those other sports as we have no control over them. However, we do have control over wrestling and we've done nothing to promote or market our sport, along with sitting on our butts and not attending duals, donating money, etc.

We've basically done ourselves in. We only have oursleves to blame. Its not like any of this is new. And still, we have coaches at the college level who see this stuff and still do absolutely nothing.

You contradict yourself. You state you could care less about those other sports, yet attempt to create a criteria for wrestling to justify our existance. The top two women's lacrosse teams in the country meet on a beautiful April day and there are a few hundred people in the stands. Yet they don't need to market themselves as you feel wrestling must.

News flash for you, there are more Division I women's lacrosse teams than there are Division I wrestling programs. And it isn't because there are more participants in lax at the high school level.

Guess what, most people in those other sports don't care about wrestling. We're considered non-revenue for a reason, just like the others. We can market ourselves until the cows come home and we're still going to be a non-revenue sport that appeals to a certain segment of the population.

Read Jason Bryant's most recent column in WIN. Hopefully you practice what you preach by subscribing to wrestling publications, joining the NWCA etc. You hear of few, if any, women's teams cut due to "the economy."

More frequently we're now held ransom to fund ourselves, and a women's team. You don't hear about women's water polo needing to fund themselves.

Or in Delaware State's case, their Women's Equestrian team ( http://www.dsuhornets.com/SportSelec...05&SPSID=82303! THAT team certainly supports the mission of an HBCU! Or the ever popular women's tennis team composed almost entirely of foreign players, most from Russia.

I will agree that we hurt ourselves by maintaining the current two semester competitive season.

But you are kidding yourself to think it is a wrestling only problem. It is a men's sports problem due to the misinterpretation of title ix.
