ban basketball - your martyrdom is misplaced. I have been a Hawkeye season ticket holder for 20+ years. I attended 3 Panther home meets this year and chatted with many of the Iowa fans that I know. I also know of several Hawkeye fans that contributed to the UNI "wrestling enhancement fund". Did you?

Ban, I think you have gotten a bad impression of "us" Iowa fans. I like UNI I just can't understand why they can't get over the hump and become a national power once again.

I think most Iowa fans are frustrated that Penrith hasn't done better.

No need to try to make me into something I'm not. So, I'd appreciate the smartass gestures staying to yourself.

Why, yes, I have contributed more money to the UNI wrestling program than anyone on here, I'll bet. I've been doing it for years as a booster, the "enhancement fund," and through the Panther Wrestling Club.

Us martyrs try to keep ourselves looking squeaky clean!

Ban, I've never met a Hawkeye fan or a Cyclone fan that lothes the Panthers. In fact they are usually everyones second favorite team. Sure every fan base has the hard cores that don't like any other team no matter what. Please try not to lump us all together when wallowing in your self pitty.

UNI wrestling has and always will be my second favorite team. I get frustrated with them because, while I like Penrith, I think he needs to be axed. He constantly has decent recruiting classes but never does anything with them. UNI fans like to throw out the twenty something consecutive regional championships, but if you know anything about wrestling you know that is total BS. IMO UNI needs a new coach and fast. It is a prime position that if done right would bring UNI back into the national spotlight. They don't have to contend for a title every year, but is once per decade too much to ask? I love UNI and want to see them win again!

Ah, yes. Just the "fan" that I'm speaking of.

Uh no. Fair weather fans only follow and cheer for the team when they are good. I follow and cheer for them all the time. I just wish they were good again. Maybe you need to reevaluate your definition of a fair weather fan.

Fair enough, sorry. I think that the few who are SO overcritical have gotten to me a bit too much.

The NCAA is in the process of reviewing all of the Division I membership requirements, but this most likely take the shape of increasing the requirements not decreasing as the review was prompted by the concern about the number of schools jumping to Division I status. Should be interesting to see what they come up with.

With Division I FCS football, Northern Iowa will be at the minimum number of men's sports starting in 2008-09, so they don't have the option of dropping a men's sport to balance their gender equity numbers. As a state institution, I wouldn't be surprised if the new AD's comments were geared toward creating leverage to convince the Iowa state legislature to grant UNI some gender equity funding to bridge the gap and increase opportunities on the female side.
