I'm anxious to see Ness at 133 next year, if he does indeed chose to go at that weight. It's always a surprise each year to see how those who decide to move up a weight end up doing. For Keaton Anderson former Ohio State Buckeye, he couldn't have made a better choice. He looked better conditioned, healthier and stronger at 157 than he ever did in prior years at 149. He took it to Luke Becker in one of the first matches of the season 12-2 or something similar, then to top that off he defeated Gray Maynard for a Midlands Championship. Anderson was on fire and if it wasn't for a Torn ACL he might have won a national championship.
Damion Hahn's move up to 197, was also a smart move.
However, sometimes moving up can prove to be a mistake. Take a few 141 All Americans from 2007, who decided to move up to 149 in 2008. Ryan Lange and Don Fisch. Lange, at 141 finished at the BIG 10's 4th-2nd-1st. At the NCAA's he finished
R12-4th-2nd. His final year he bumped up to 149, and and at the BIG 10's finished 7th. At the NCAA's he went 1-2. Fisch, went from 5th as a junior to 0-2 as a senior. Moving up a weight class, was not smart for either one of them.
It just depends on so many factors. I personally see Ness being a lot like Gregor Gillispie was when he moved from 149 to 157. Still quite the butt kicker, but with a little more competition. Or maybe he might be like Phil Simpson the year he moved from 141 all the way up to 157. Went from taking a very strong statement 3rd place as a sophomore, to going 3 overtimes with Matt Lebe just to call himself an All American as a junior. Came back to 149, to finish 2nd as a senior.
