One of the criteria is previous sport success, didn't ASU win and NCAA DI title years back?

I believe they did it with no finalists.

ASU won't be the last. Eventually there will be an elite groups of wrestling colleges in the mid-west / far east, with a smattering of survivors in the west.

My crystal ball says reverberations will reach lower levels... high schools, and we'll see the demise of many popular tournaments due to rising gas prices which affect costs of attending and hosting.

Wrestling's future is not bright. :-(

Arizona State University may have less cheerful sidelines at sporting events next season.

After racy photos of members of the university’s cheerleading squad were spotted on a campus blog called “The Dirty,” the school cut the squad completely, MyFOXPhoenix reported.

The school's athletic director, Lisa Love, made the decision Thursday evening. The pictures on the blog feature 6 of the cheerleaders posing in nothing but their bras and panties.

Although only six members of the squad are shown in the photographs, the entire 16-member squad will suffer the consequences, MyFOXPhoenix reported.

The cheerleaders told MyFOXPhoenix that the photographs were a result of college kids goofing off, and they believe the decision to disband the team has been in the works for a while. The photographs are two years old, and were taken at a “cheer party.”

ASU cheerleader Briana Barcelo told MyFOXPhoenix she believes the Web site is insignificant, and a way to ruin people’s lives.

“It’s just good timing on their part I guess,” Barcelo said of the photos surfacing at the same time the school decided to cut the squad. “And now it’s been all taken away.”

Rumor is spreading that ASU may be reinstated at a limited capacity.

Another one worth a read: http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepu...18sun1-18.html

Title IX's headlock

The Arizona Republic
May. 18, 2008 12:00 AM
The 1972 act of Congress to help eliminate sex discrimination in schools is known as Title IX, an amendment to the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Today, it is also the great, big elephant in the middle of Arizona State University's athletic department - the elephant that is as much responsible as the university's current budget crunch for the axing of three ASU men's sports.

Yes, the decision to eliminate men's wrestling, swimming and tennis is a reflection of the state's free-falling revenues. Facing a $3.4 million deficit, eliminating the three programs will save ASU $350,000.

Budget cuts, of course, are necessary for all enterprises that must meet a bottom line, and the programs headed by Lisa Love, the ASU athletic director, are no different.

But the choices that left ASU with eight men's programs and 12 for women were forced on the university as much by federal requirements regarding proportional resource allocation for men and women - Title IX, in other words - as by the need to cut spending. Given the extraordinary impact - both good and bad, by the way - that Title IX has had on college sports, it is irresponsible to pretend that elephant isn't there.

In 1979, the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights interpreted the 1972 law to require "proportionality" between men and women athletes in U.S. colleges and high schools.

Effectively, that requirement has evolved into a de facto quota system in which women's programs have been expanded and created to proportionally equate to the number of women on a school's campus. Faced with that strictly enforced mandate, schools have faced three choices: Expand opportunities for women, reduce athletic opportunities for men or attempt both.

In flush times, schools have found ways to strike a balance. Women's team sports such as basketball, softball, soccer and rowing have blossomed around the country. We no longer live in an age in which women were relegated to being cheerleaders for the men. For women, Title IX has worked to splendid effect. And, historically, ASU's record at striking a fair balance has been laudatory.

Generally, though, the interpretation of Title IX has not been great for male athletes, especially when budget woes put a ceiling on athletics overall.

In 1987, ASU's wrestling team won the NCAA title. On Tuesday, it joined the hundreds of college wrestling programs that have been eliminated since 1979 as school officials strive to meet Title IX requirements or face losing federal funding.

As the proportion of women on college campuses continues to increase relative to men, the predicament of athletic directors such as ASU's Love becomes ever more impossible, thanks to the harshly simplistic application of Title IX since 1979.

Yes, the loss of three men's sports is about resources. But it also is about an interpretation of a law that demonstrates indifference to the fate of one sector of humanity while seeking to improve the lot of another.

Love can’t possibly understand the amount of stress she has put all of our young athletes under! It was so cruel the way they dropped this bomb on them. How heartless do you have to be? And her excuses make me ill! Ohhhhhh, finals, ohhhhhhhh the tennis team is still competing, economics, blah, blah, blah! She could have told the wrestling team and Swim team months ago, I know the wrestling season was over in Feb and they could have had time to plan for their futures! Oh, but I’m sure the wrestlers are ever so GRATFUL they could take their finals in peace verses having a college team to compete at this coming season!?!? Is this Love person for real? Even if ASU can’t afford these 3 sports (which I still do not believe) there is absolutely no excuse for the timing and manner in which Love decided to inform these poor kids that they are SCREWED! Love has not only embarrassed herself, but she made the college & state of Arizona looks bad as well. Ortiz just signed 4 new guys, all out of state kids. They all turned down other offers I’m sure, so now what? They beg for the other offers back? Guess what, THEY ARE GONE! Given to other wrestlers… How could Love let that happened! She knew they were cutting the program, yet still allowed Ortiz sign new wrestlers… And other colleges have already signed their new wrestlers and spent their budgets, so even though they would love nothing more than to sign some of our athletes the money is no longer there! I just want to express how sorry am I that ASU did this to our Arizona athletes! I wish all these boys the best of luck and sincerely hope they all find a place call home and take pride in! I’m so saddened that ASU you let you guys down like this. Shame on you ASU! What goes around comes around 3 times over, you better watch out Love, you have A LOT of bad karma lurking over your shoulder!
