Swimming usually has a larger roster size than diving though.
It make perfect sense, the more I think about it. Keeping diving allows them to keep up their number of sanctioned sports so that their D-I status is safe, but at the same time, it's a sport that costs little more than scholarships since they just practice with the women.
THey said they were restructuring the spirit program when they dropped cheer, so I think all of the spirit squads were separate. Very few schools have cheer as a sport.
Yes, our competitive cheer team at Maryland is totally seperate from the spirit squad. It isn't simply a matter af annointing them as a "team." The OCR laid out the criteria we had to meet for them to consider competitive cheer a team for the purposes of title ix: scheduling, scholarships, coaching, etc. And they don't show up on the sideline for games.

The University of Miami did the same thing a couple of years ago. I gives them another team with minimal investment. Without digging into the NCAA Manual I don't know how or if the scholarships are seperated out like Cross Country is if it is a stand alone team without Track and Field.
Sports by Brooks wrote a post - warning, the pic they used was the racy one that got the cheerleading program tossed (allegedly!), so if you can't look at coeds in their undies while you are at work, wait to click until you get home:
Couple stories posted on both the IM blog and the SaveASUwrestling page. Facebook group was started around 1 p.m. and by 5:35 (Eastern), it's up to over 300 with nearly 2,100 invites sent out today, in four and a half hours alone.
TheMat.com and InterMat have linked to the SaveASUwrestling page as major news items.
I don't know what good it will do but I have e-mailed every ESPN talk radio show begging for them to give this story some air time. Maybe if we all send an email it will actually get a few minutes on the radio or TV. I have to play the sympathy card with Robles but whatever it takes I guess.
