A lot of jr. high and high schools have wrestling teams. There's also wrestling clubs, a few in each province, for students whose school as no team or for the top wrestlers to get extra training. Atheltes usually compete in tournaments, only a few duals. There are zone, city and provincial championships, with age-class nationals at the end of the year.
After high school, some CIS schools have wrestling teams where you can wrestle varsity, with 3 conferences (Atlantic, Canada West, Ontario). There's a bunch of tournaments, some informal dual meets, and conference and CIS championships at the end of the seasons. Non-university athletes can wrestle as club athletes with universities, or join a sr. wrestling club. Each year we hold a Sr. National championship and the winner goes to the WC's. In Olympic years there is an Olympic Trials tournament.

He was probably the best wrestler on Canada's team.

So along with his Olympic Gold he has at least one NAIA national championship.
