Cal Poly, better academics and better coaching staff in my opinion.

Not medicine. Leans toward philosophy, poli sci. MMostly just cares about wrestling. Looking at the big guys it appears SLO gets higher recruits but Davis' Alcala finished ahead of Powers in PAC 10.

Interesting, I see that UC Davis is a top 50 nationally ranked university, while Cal Poly is a top 10 western regional masters level school. At least by rankings it would seem that UC Davis is the better school.
Not that the only criteria should be rankings, but rather the academic fit, followed by the wrestling fit.

What weight is he?
If he is a little guy, Cal Poly has Sammie Henson and Matt Azevdeo in the room. If he is a big guy, Mark Munoz is at Davis.

Re: Seeking opinion: Cal Poly or UC Davis
Nice problem to have! Both schools have a number of similarities (great coaching staffs, Pac 10 members, beautiful settings, strong academics) and the differences are small. If the student were my wrestler, I would steer him towards which ever school had the best workout partners and assistant coach near his weight class. One other thing to consider, since you mentioned that he is primarily interested in wrestling, is the fact that UC Davis is geographically closer to additional opportunities for freestyle/greco competition and other collegiate programs to work out with, something that I think is an overlooked but very important consideration for off-season training. Davis is about one hour from the SF Bay area and the Bay Area Wrestling Association (BAWA) and less than 15 minutes from Sacramento and the Sac Area Wrestling Association. Both of these organizations offer Fall and Spring/Summer freestyle and greco tournaments pretty much every weekend. I personally found these organizations to be instrumental in my progress as a collegiate and international wrestler. It was also great to be able to drive a short distance and train with guys from Stanford, San Jose St. Skyline, Chabot, Sierra and Sac city colleges in the off season. I think Cal Poly is a bit isolated from other programs save for a JC or two.

Brother Mojo:
I used to wrestle in the BAWA! But the one I competed in was the British Amateur Wrestling Association!

Re: Seeking opinion: Cal Poly or UC Davis
Thanks for the input. In the end it looks like he chose Cal Poly over Davis even though he's a 285. Munoz leaving Davis was a clincher. The kid loved San Luis Obispo and who can blame him. This will be an upgrade for that spot for the Mustangs.

reputation of cal poly slo vs. uc schools
,
is uc davis or cal poly a better school
