Default Iowa Wrestling Banquet

PERRY & Metcalf SHARE MOST VALUABLE AWARD

The 2008 Iowa Wrestling Awards Banquet was held in Iowa City on Sunday, May 4th. Over 400 Hawkeye fans, friends, and family listened as the Head Hawk Tom Brands congratulated his team for this year's accomplishements and then challenged them to take it to the next level as they prepare for next season.

Sophomore Brent Metcalf and Senior Mark Perry shared the Mike Howard award for the team's Most Valuable wrestler, and both were also recognized and awarded for earning individual national titles. Perry also earned the award for Most Pins in the 2007-2008 season. Other awards and recipients were:

Most Improved Award
Matt Fields

All-American Award
Charlie Falck
Joey Slaton
Jay Borschel
Phillip Keddy
Matt Fields

Coaches Appreciation Award
Daniel Dennis
Rick Loera

J. Donald McPike, Sr. Award (Highest G.P.A.)
Matt Fields

Mike J. McGivern Award (Most Courageous)
Chad Beatty

I was surprised that Matt Fields got most improved over Phil Keddy. Maybe its just a senior thing.

Guess I am a little surprised to see most improved go to Fields over Keddy.

I think you could make a case for Keddy being most improved in the entire country, let alone on his own team. I was little surprised to see Fields get the other award too. If someone had asked me to guess who on Iowa's team has the highest GPA, Fields would not have been high on my list.

Keddy was given the award and then he turned it down because he told Coach Brands he didn't win the National championship, he didn't deserve the Most Improved Award. The award was then given to Fields.

When did Metcalf change majors? Wasn't the quality of the engineering school part of his criteria (other than Brands of course) for deciding on VT/Iowa?

I was wondering the same thing. I'm kinda not surprised though, an engineering curriculum is incredibly demanding and well couple that with a very very demanding sport and one of them has to go.
