Another person who had suprising strength for his size and physique was Dave Schultz. You would never know to look at him, especially when he was going up against such physical marvels as Kemp and Monday, but Dave had amazing grip strength and leverage. Watch the Schultz-Carr USA Freestyle nationals final from (87?) where he makes Nate scream out in pain for a good example of Daves power.
Strange , but today I was watching DSchultz in some international matches and he just rips his opponents knee up to the guys back , ignores the ref who is trying to swat Dave offf the Knee and Dave just rips the kid over for back points -I had forgotten how strong and MEAN Schultz was .

A POX upon the House of DuPont.

Brother Morris,

You know your big men!

Just got out my handy copy of Jay Hammond's "The History of Collegiate Wrestling", and sure enough, here's what it says about the 1978 NCAA heavyweight title bout:

"The final match of the evening ended almost as quickly as the first one when two-time heavyweight champion Jimmy Jackson of Oklahoma State literally flattened John Sefter of Princeton in just 1:12. Jackson used his substantial weight advantage to counter a single-leg takedown attempt by Sefter and envelope him with a body press."

(FYI -- the first match referred to here was when Andy Daniels of Ohio University (yeah!) pinned Cal State-Bakersfield's John Azevedo in just 30 seconds.)

Here are some photos of the match,
Mark

Someone mentioned his brother Ed, but Lou Banach has to be on any list of strongest wrestlers. At about 215 lbs. he manhandled guys twice his size. He threw Tab Thacker, 440 lbs., even though he couldn't get his arms around him. He also bridged for nearly a minute under Dr. Death Steve Williams, 320 lbs. He and Ed could do strict sets of curls, 10 reps with 225 lbs.
