Adam Frey stared wide-eyed at his mangled green Honda SUV resting against a tree on a rural two-lane road outside Ithaca, N.Y.

He had walked away from the one-car crash with nothing more than a headache and sore neck.

"At that point, I almost felt like I was unbreakable," he said. "I looked at that and said, 'I should be dead. I should not have lived through this.' "

Frey, 22, of Shaler Township, didn't know during that moment of indestructibility that a couple hours later, he would begin the toughest battle of his life.

Great article. This kid is a true role model because of the way that he handles himself not only during the good times, but more importantly, during the difficult times.
