    Default NCAAs: D1, D2 & D3 As One Event?

In his column in the April 4, 2008 issue of WIN, Bryan Von Kley makes a couple interesting proposals...

One is to have the championships for all three divisions of college wrestling together at one event. If I understand him correctly, he would have a single Division II/Division III session on the Wednesday immediately before the Division I championships traditionally begin. If any additional time is needed, those matches could be wrestled on Thursday between D1 sessions.

    He lists these potential plusses:
    > Diehard fans of ALL of college wrestling have only one event to attend -- less travel
    > D2 and D3 coaches don't miss out on watching potential recruits in action at HS state tournaments
    > D2 and D3 wrestlers get to compete in front of a potentially greater number of fans, and gain more media attention

    Whadya think?
    Mark

PS Sorry, I couldn't find a link to Bryan's column at the WIN website, hence my paraphrasing. If you can find a direct link, post it here.

The idea has merit. The majority attending the Div I tournament travel on Wednesday anyway. I suspect a lot would be interested in attending Div II/III finals that night.

The bigger issue is getting our season moved to a one semester sport that ends in mid-April.

I read Bryan's editorial and I understand his reasoning, but I just can't agree. First of all, what kid wants to work his/her butt off for 10 - 15 years to be the "warm-up act"?

Secondly, the atmospheres are completely different at the various tournaments - they have separate identities. The character of the DIII championships, especially, would suffer. It's a different type of fan that attends DIIIs.

Finally, this already happens at National Duals - and the DI fans get up and leave as soon as their favorite team is done. Clayton Rush probably had the most exciting tournament of any wrestler at National Duals and I'll bet almost none of the DI fans saw 10 seconds of his matches.

Keep them separate, but build on them.

On the other hand, the duals are a different animal. I agree that holding them as a warm-up act might seem to demean their tourney. And it's tougher for their parents and fans to travel mid-week.

However, it's unlikely I'd ever travel specifically to the Div II or III nationals but I'd certainly watch them, or at least the finals, if they were held prior to Div I. Just like the Division I wrestlers, the Div II and III athletes deserve to wrestle before larger crowds.

C'mon, Terp, Cedar Rapids is a great town (just ask grapplefan) and the DIIIs are a unique experience. I know I'll have a tough time getting you here for next year's event because it will be the same weekend as ACCs, but I have to try (I'd drive you by Brenda Frese's high school - free of charge).

No one, I repeat, NO ONE, wants college wrestlers to have a large audience more than I do. I'm just not sure that Bryan's suggestion is the best way.

I think that the NCAA might object to a mid-week event because of all the classes the athletes would have to miss.
