Where is this anti Cael rhetoric you speak of?*

*If you are talking about themat.com.

My response is: You don't order a poop sandwich and then complain about the taste.

While I wouldn't call this "Anti-Cael Rhetoric", I definitely think his comments below are either fear or frustration. He certainly didn't come off as confident like he tried (at least not to me, and I would consider myself as much a fan of Brands as I do Sanderson)

Then listen to Brands, who refuses to act under siege when he’s the one who was the primary conductor of the last two national championship squads.

“Regionally, they’re going to maybe be a stronger recruiting presence (1),” Brands said. “There’s still a lot of good kids out there.

“Resources (2) and money (3) and facilities (4) and being out there in the recruiting hotbed of Pennsylvania and Ohio and the East Coast (5) where the population is — they said eight of the 10 national champions (this year) grew up within a four-hour drive of Happy Valley. That doesn’t mean anything to me.”

“I’ve been in Penn State’s wrestling room and it’s nice. It is nice, and it doesn’t matter.
    (6)

    1) If they are a stronger regional presence, in the strongest region in the country, its a pretty big deal.

2-5) While Iowa's resources are probably better (coaching staff, history, fan base) I think that PSU has an advantage over Iowa in every other category.

I know he is trying to come off as confident in their system (and he should be!), but if 8 of the 10 kids that won the NCAAs were within driving distance of PSU it better actually mean something to him or he is delusional.

    6) Repeating the wrestling room situation makes me think that is his biggest fear about the whole deal.

Iowa is getting new facilities anyway. It doesn't matter.

People will come to Iowa and Iowa State, Oklahoma State, and Minnesota because they want to go to a great program with National Championship history.

If you see my earlier post Take the top 5 programs from last year (One is based in PA).

Edinboro who placed 5th had 6 kids out of 35 on the team were from PA.

So 6 kids out of approximately 175 total wrestlers on the top 5 teams wrestled in PA.

And one of the six was Adam Frey who wrestled at Blair Academy.

My point is you need good local kids(majority of the team), Some good regional kids, A few great local, regional and National talent to be a National contender.

It maybe easier for Cael to land PA, OH, NY, NJ kids now but, harder to get Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri, and Nebraska kids who grew up watching the Cyclones. It's a trade off in my opinion.

Edinboro is hardly Penn State with the only undefeated NCAA Champ in their backyard.

It remains to be seen how much of an effect Sanderson being at PSU will have on the overall recruiting in the region, but if the Alton brothers are any example, it could be very tough for anyone to steal the top PA talent from PSU going forward.

PA has the talent pool of WI, MN, & IA combined, so the PA kids that previously weren't coming to ISU now have an in-state option that is capable of immediately becoming a powerhouse.

It will be 2-3 years before we see how much of an effect he has on recruiting PA & other kids from that region, but I don't think he'd have made such a huge move if he didn't think it was going to make a huge difference.

Tim Flynn is a great coach. Let's not fool ourselves here. Cael only has 9.9 just like everyone else. He is also competing against 13 times 9.9 in PA alone. He will win some and lose some just like he did at ISU. He got taylor from OH, Thompson and Weatherman from IA, Beard, this list goes on and on. I'm sure he lost guys to Brands, Ryan, Robinson ect...

Somebody was going to get the Altons, Cael was in the right place at the right time. As Dan Gable used to say "now we just got to go get someone to beat them."

Take 10 kids out of a high school wrestling room and ask them to name the best wrestler they've heard of. I bet you never hear "Tim Flynn". You will hear "Dan Gable" or "Cael Sanderson" more often than not.

Not that Flynn isn't a great coach, he definitely is, but the name recognition isn't there like it is with Sanderson. He will almost certainly dominate east coast recruiting. OSU will continue to control Ohio pretty well, but look at the difference Tom Ryan made at OSU by keeping his kids in state.

He has 9.9, but has 3-4x the talent in his state.. It won't leak to different parts of the country as much. In state tuition is cheaper, so, (especially in this economy) keeping kids around PA to wrestle for a 4x-er will be easier than bring them across the country for the same %. With that in mind, a kid that is only worth 10-20% his first year will be much happier to take it from PSU where his tuition won't be crazy high like it would at Iowa- where he has to pay considerably more for his education & move across the country. Before, they were on the same playing field for the PA kids (and surrounding kids in states with reciprocity (if there are any??)) in terms of financing.

How many kids in Ohio had heard of Tom Ryan before he got to OSU? Yes Cael has "the name" but beyond that he is still just another good young coach. He can recruit all that talent he will still have to develop it. Cael will do great things as a coach @ PSU but, not anything he couldn't have done at ISU. IMO.

Anyone who says replacing OH, NJ, NY, PA kids with Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri, and Nebraska kids is just a trade-off needs to check in to Reality Inn for a few nights.

I take as a compliment from someone who thinks Terry Brands wasn't Cejudo's coach. My numbers above prove my point. take the plane from Fantasy Island and join me in reality. Btw say Hi to Mr. York and Tattoo for me.
