Thread: Adam Frey's illness

Shane if he does something offensive then close it by all means.

I just think that given his rep, people are quick to jump on him. I don't think he was saying that Adam's habits are directly responsible, but rather couldn't help wonder if his weight cutting was one of the contributing factors, if he was predisposed to begin with. Given the available info on the disease I am wondering the same thing. Obviously it is a stretch, but not illogical. And yes it may be inappropriate given the timing, but what do you expect from Big? Some of you are over-reacting IMO.

Thanks quick I owe you one. Possibly I am wrong on this but I don't think I am being ridiculous. Its something to think about.

My problem is that Big doesn't know the difference between what you talk about with friends, and what you post on a public message board. At this point, some moron can now write "Some have speculated that Frey's lymphoma was caused by his weight cutting." After that, "some have speculated" will be removed from the sentence. It happens very quickly, and anyone who has been on the other board knows it's true. It's not what's best for the kid right now, and unless you're a total moral vacuum, which I don't think Big is, you want what is best for him. I'm sure these thoughts have already been running through the minds of Adam and his family and friends since the diagnosis, but having it discussed on a public message board is a completely different thing.

Basically, this is not the time or place. Big, I know that you always think it is the time and place for your opinion, but seriously, it's not.

    It is..... later.

There isn't anything bad, that can happen to anybody, which doesn't give you something to think about. How we address the various issues is how we move forward. But there is a time and place for this sort of thing and I think your timing is terribly off in this case.

Maybe the timing is off but it can possibly save some wrestler's life if he reads this and decides not to cut too much weight next year.

Start a new thread and make your case. Frey hasn't passed on and doesn't deserve to be your poster boy.

The stress you suggest doesn't help. But I can make a pretty good case for the stress of living in NYC being bad (it would kill me). Or the stress of divorce. Or the stress of being a bitter child of Russian ex-patriots..... all of which cause enormous stress that would impede the body from fighting a cancer.

On the otherhand..... when my mom was looking 90, and everything looked like she was doomed, she used that stress to live instead. The odds were 98% she would die. All of her daughter in laws are terrified of her. She can be very mean. You would think that such a brutally negative outlook would be against her.... yet it saved her life and she is still mean as sin 15 years later.

Weight cutting and it's affect is a very interesting topic, but can we move it to another thread.

I think some of you are being unfair to Big in my opinion. The information on wikipedia is coming from doctors or medical scientists. I'm not saying everything on wikipedia or other internet sources is always correct, but it wasn't always correct when a doctor or medical scientist wrote it in a journal prior to the internet either. If it were, there would be preventive measures that work, and higher rates of cancer cures. Big is formulating his opinion and communicating what he knows. I've always believed knowledge is enabling, and Big's intentions here are not negative, but positive.

I don't think that we're unfair to BIG, who enjoys inciting controversy here quite frequently. We all know that excessive weight-cutting is detrimental, but unless he can provide statistical evidence that excessive weight-cutting for wrestling and cancer are correlated, then his concept is hypothetical at best, and could be most damaging to Adam and to the sport.

The web has allowed a whole new level of misinformation to propagate. Scientific evidence takes time. Is cancer linked with weakened immune systems? Most likely it is. But can we prove a causal relationship in this case? That's very unlikely.

Very bad things can happen to very good people. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Adam Frey, and we are ALL hoping for his speedy recovery and continued success.
