Thread: Metcalf slam in finals?

    Default Metcalf slam in finals?

(Okay, one more for today. As a photographer it's fun to go back and actually watch the matches on TV. Again, apologies if this has been discussed.)

On the second lift Metcalf literally left his feet coming down with Bubba. How was it not a slam? Don't get me wrong, I'm very into tough wrestling and fully understand what level we are talking about here, but this isn't open freestyle/greco is it?

It just seemed like a very hard shoulder drop. Did anyone hear if that knocked the wind out of Bubba? He got turned shortly there after.

I for one didn't see the slam and I was there. You guys know how biased I can be against Iowa and I didn't see the slam.

I saw the match and it didn't even cross my mind that it was illegal.

Not an intentional slam. I saw all the finals on TV, of course.

I was sitting four rows behind the press area and was with a ref who has officiated at this tournament many times. His take: it would have been a slam in high school, maybe a slam at a lower college level, but not a slam at this level of competition.

I was only a few feet away, and it didn't seem like a slam. The crowd and coaches would have gone crazy, too, if they saw something that didn't look right.

Don't you mean Zadick, Schwab, Gable and Brands would have gone crazy had it happened to their guy?

I think any coach would go crazy about an illegal slam. Yeah, the Iowa boys are slightly animated but no coach would stand for a slam.

I turned and asked if anyone else thought the slam "could" have been called illegal. Most thought it was hard, but borderline, that was at least the thoughts from those around press row.

In high school, I think that's definitely called, NCAA finals ... not so much.
