Default Did Hickson (ref) talk too much in 141 final?

[Apologies if this has been discussed already.]

I know Dave Hickson from high school, he's originally from upstate NY (interestingly, not far from where Lou Roselli grew up). I know he's considered one of the best refs out there today. I was shooting the match from a distance so didn't hear him talking, but watching the match last night he was really chatty. Too chatty?

Tim Johnson was remarking how much he was talking while Blatnick (also a NYer) was just silent as if he didn't have anything good to say about how much Dave was directing them to "shoot of the tie up" and "someone take a shot" etc.

I did like his last comment to JJ: "Way to tough it out."

    Thoughts?

    It did seem excessive.

I surmise the refs were encouraged to get vocal since ESPN put mikes on them.

I agree, some of those refs really sounded like they were hamming it up a little bit.

While sitting matside this weekend I snuck a few few peaks at the NCAA Official Evaluator's notepad. The evaluators were evaluating on how vocal the officials were, some were not very vocal and I presume they want them to be somewhat vocal during the match.

Other things on the list were things such as positioning, anticipation and whether the match was difficult to ref or easy to ref. Of course there was a section on stalling too.

I haven't watched the match on TV in its entirety so I really can't comment on it yet, but thought I'd share with you why this one might be a little talkative.
I will smash your face into a car windshield and then take your mother, Dorothy Mantooth, out to a nice seafood dinner and never call her again!

Tell me about it, this morning, I woke up and I shit a squirrel, but what I can't get is the damn thing is still alive. So now, I've got a shit covered squirrel running around my office and I don't know what to name it.

I don't have a problem with a vocal ref...although I wouldn't be surprised if it had something to do with ESPN/TV. Guys at this level certainly know what they're doing and it's up to the ref to make sure neither one of them forgets that during the match

I also have no problem with a vocal ref. I'd rather have that, than some of the guys that will suddenly with no warning throw up a stall fist. I agree that some of the officials were probably a little more vocal than usual because of being mic'd, but most of the better officals I've known in any sport are vocal. Usually it's to let guys know when they're close to being called for something, so that they can correct it w/o the ref having to interject themselves into the match or game.

I don't wanna go too far off the rails here, but it's similar to sex (or, coitus).

If I look like I'm struggling, having a hard time getting my move on, then speak up and tell me what I'm doing wrong.

If I'm clearly trying to improve my position, working hard on top, then pipe down and let me do my thing.
