I'd suggest that the competencies needed to become a Division I head coach are more than just on-the-mat coaching ability. It's unlikely that the premier jobs would be given to an assistant coach, unless they are an heir-apparent like a Marty Morgan. Which means that most openings are going to be filled by someone who will have to build a program.

What skills does a coach need in order to build a program?
1. Certainly coaching ability.
2. Recruiting ability. And that means developing relationships over time, not just based on reputation.
3. Fundraising. Most likely a program that needs building will need money to do so.
4. Networking. The ability to bring alumni and friends back to support and build the program.
5. Outreach. Making community contacts, especially youth and high school wrestlers and coaches.
6. Political savvy. Knowing how to work within an athletic department to build and sell your program while competing for limited resources.

Just some thoughts based on recent experience.

I don't know who their lightweight coach is, that is kind of my point I think. I am sure they have some guys in the room but the first three guys for Minny in regards to coaching are J. Rob, Marty Morgan and Russell and those guys can't really get down and wrestle with these lighter weights.

I was wondering who was rolling around with the lighter guy at Minnesota.

I wonder if its Becker or Lawrence but they have to be in the 160-170 range.

Its a good question.

Tom, "Wants" to and "has" to. Kind of the same thing when you really think about it.

You, like him seem to have very strong personalities you will make a much better head coach than assistant. You know what is right, you know what you need and because you your level of work ethic there are not alot of people you could work for. Just my guess. Again People leave people. Every managagement guite in the country talks about this concept.
So you have done a great job managing this.
I personaly wanted to leave jobs. But due to not getting out of them what I needed. That being said. We all mature with time, so what ever was the issues seem to not matter as much as we get older. You are not the same guy you were 5 years ago.

I see him a couple years behind you in this getting done.

You guys need to give each other a professional break now and then.

I remember reading somewhere, or maybe hearing it on the GoldZone that Erickson still gets in the room and goes with the lightweights.

People over on the Guillotine mentioned that Reiter was probably going to stick around the room for a while, so even if they don't officially hire him as a coach, he'll be a good guy to work with the small guys.

I see if the first part you are referring to the Tom Brands quote. The rest of your post is a mystery, I have know idea what you are talking about.

I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling that way!
