Thread: Favorite Moments

    Default Favorite Moments

    - Ness collecting the ankles for 2 at the edge with 8 seconds left in the semi's against Donahoe to advance to the finals.

    - Reiter and Rivera both making AA, Reiter getting his third, and Rivera getting that elusive first. Even more so the fact that they both won their final matches was really cool.

    - Kish being ravaged by injuries, but still showing a ton of heart. Had he managed to beat Smith in the round of 12, even if everything this weekend had gone the same for Minnesota I'd have probably managed to be satisfied.

    - Keith Gavin and Phil Davis closing their careers off with titles.

    - Learning by text message on Thursday that Lost didn't know Anthony Robles only had one leg.

    - Listening to the TDR announcers say that they had a hard time telling Ray Jordan and Phil Keddy apart because they were both wearing black singlets.

    My faves:

The round of 12 where ISU went 6-0

    Mack, Gallick, and Bert AAing

Varner realizing he wouldn't win it, but could AA anyway, then letting Kish win in the quarters to AA (or was that a dream)

    Burroughs taking 3rd

    Bergman's Ah-nold impression

    * Iowa's team title, and Metcalf & Perry

    * Coleman Scott winning (even though it was over Slaton). He's been one of my favorites since he was in high school.

    * The fact that the team race for 2nd was so close

    * RAYMOND JORDAN (my North Carolina boy) finally breaking through the All American barrier. And another NC boy, Daren Burns, getting to the round of 12

    * These guys making AA: Mark McKnight, Matt Kyler, Mack Reiter, Hudson Taylor

    * The 7th place match at 133, love the blood!!

    * Jaggers. Been a favorite of mine ever since the OSU talent show video

    * guys fighting through injuries: Escobedo, Jaggers, Perry, Kish (yeah even though he didn't place, I think it was a victory just to compete)

    * Jenkins beating Caldwell. Churella beating Caldwell

    * The fact that 3 guys that have wrestled in the Super 32 Challenge made All American: Bubba Jenkins, Jon Reader, Raymond Jordan

    * Catching glimpses on TV of Doug Schwab, Joe Dubuque, and Tommy Rowlands

    * Having the technology to be able to put videos on youtube!!

** Oh yeah and I almost forgot -- the Dookies losing in the bball tourney today!!

Escobedo winning another title for Mena!
Leen and Jaggers upsetting the world.
Even though it was at the expense of Slaton, I'm glad Scott got a title!
Old teammates, Tom Brands and Tom Ryan kicked ass as coaches.

    * Matt Fields winning what we can only assume will be his last match ever.

    * Mark Perry blowing kisses to the crowd after his semifinal match.

    * Listening to Bobcat and Bob Dane talk for at least five minutes about how to pronounce "Michalak" (and, wait for it ... getting it totally wrong).

    * Screaming at the TV with my seven-year-old during the Metcalf match. (She knows all the Hawkeye starters' names and likes to try to teach her little friends how the scoring works.)

    * Phil Davis's TV interview (sewing parties!).

The announcer's...one in particular...not knowing that it was Donahoe wrestling for third and continuing to think it was Gardner well into the the late first and maybe early second period.

Not to spark another Iowa Asst. coach thread, but I gotta give credit to Zadick for his wardrobe choice. I pointed it out to some of the group who were over to watch and it was noted by my brother that Zadick was from Montana and the black Ostrich skin boots were not as surprising as one might think.

After hating Coleman Scott for sooooo long (saw firsthand how he treated lesser opponents like Thorne last season), his emotional reaction was really great to see. That was as pure a reaction as you could imagine and he really is a tremendous competitor who should be credited for mat awareness in reaching for that head and fighting to ensure that he turned the cradle when it was locked.

The Phil Davis sewing bit was right up there with Steve Luke's love for Hannah Montana that come up via the commentary during the MN/MI dual.

The stark realization that regardless of the bogus stalling call on Ness....Escobedo was truly the better wrestler and may clear up the debate whether Ness should move up to 133 to make new for Sanders....or maybe not?!?

Mack, Manny, and Kish going out with pride. Maybe I should include the other seniors like Gabe and CP, but it is still too painful. Maybe later.

The comical fake dialogue our group had during the 165 finals where that ref was so authoritative with his addressing the wrestlers. "Tannenbaum, you are in bottom position...Ferry, elbow goes last." "I think you mean Perry sir." "Whatever Nancy, just wrestle!" I realize this is just our group but it was rather entertaining. (I would like to acknowledge that it pains me to say, but I want to give great credit to Perry for his two titles and 3 (?) finals...can't hate on that. Hard not to pull for a student athlete like Tann.)

Having never known what that back tattoo was on Metcalf, I saw what it was tonight and after knowing what he went through that was pretty respectable.

J Jaggers....what a warrior!! Not much else to say.

No direspect intended, but Phil Davis's mother could woop some tail I reckon!

The heart show by Fanthorpe and Baker in their bloodbath for 7th.

What I can only assume was Jaggers mother screaming and pointing at him something very positive / emotional when he came up to them after his title. Pure familial emotion that sorta scared me at the same time!

There are too many to mention considering I was much happier after last years tourny, but what the heck.....this sport is too special to identify the negatives for my favorite teams without noting the other great parts.

(This post was kept Gage friendly)

Thank you to everyone for your updates and posts during this whole week and season as it was immensly helpful when not being able to be near the TV or computer.
