Default Gophers have to be disappointed

From being a "prohibitive" favorite after last years NCAA's to repeat as champs - they are in 10th place right now. It seems like an astounding collapse! I know some of it is injury related but this group of seniors has to be disappointed in the results. Thanks for the memories seniors - I wish it could have been different for you.

Mack's going out with a bang. Come on, Mack, third place!

3rd would be a good finish. If someone told me that Mack and Rivera would AA this year I would have said without a doubt that we were going to win it all.

I would not have counted on DS, CP, Dretsch, Saf and Kish to have wrestled so poorly down the stretch. Kish gets a pass from me however.

I'm really disappointed CP didn't place. I was really wanting to see him finish on a high note.

I'm also pulling for Reiter to get 3rd. And I'm just glad Kish was able to compete.

Very true they have to be disappointed. I honestly believe injuries had a lot to do with it but at the same time several teams (IA, ISU, etc.) made tremendous strides this year.

Additionally, several of MN's starters never really seemed to have gotten better as their careers progressed and I wonder if that's a matter of coaching, individual determination or what. I think JRob and his staff may want to take a look at the way they train and see if that is causing the injuries and also if it's responsible for the guys in their charge for plateauing early in their wrestling careers. Now I know their are exceptions like Manny who improved every year but what about guys like Dretsch?
The NCAA selection committee just screwed the Gophers on seeding.

I'm shocked too. This isn't like the teams of last few years. That they don't win it all is one thing. But that they drop down to around tenth is astonishing, given the proven level of talent. I just don't get it. No other team (Iowa, ISU, OSU) can do this to you. You have to do this kind of thing to yourself.

If I were a Minny fan I'd be wanting Marty to be the head man!

Marty will get his chance soon enough I think. I know J. Rob wanted to see this recruiting class go out and I think he is certainly disappointed for them and even in himself for how the season turned out. For those who are complaining about the #10 finish, remember that there is only about a 15 point difference between 10th and 2nd. C.P., Dretsch and Kish could have easily made up that difference had they wrestled a little bit better or been healthy.

All that being said, I agree that quite a few teams took some tremendous strides this year and made it the most exciting year that I can remember.

In hindsight, I wish J Rob and staff would have considered putting Dretsch up to 184 and then putting Glasser in at 174 and leaving Saf at 165. I think Kish was obviously in bad shape. I think Dretsch could have stayed in there against 184 at Big Ten's and it would have been nice to have been able to keep Glasser back in the line-up. Kish would not have gone for that however.

I am looking forward to seeing some new faces in the line-up next year.

That is how coseit can be I think.

I think Dretsch at 184 would have been a bad idea. He's a kid who likes upper body ties and throws, but he's not that great at them...put him against bigger guys then he already struggles with, and he won't do so well, IMO.
