Any ideas for what causes this collapse? No motivation? Not hungry? Satisfied with last year's championship?

Injuries. Couldn't get guys out on the mat this season and keep them there.

I honestly think that's only part of it. It seems like some of them simply lacked the desire (i.e. didn't have the fire) that they had in the past. While injuries were part of it I think there is something more that we'll never know about.
The NCAA selection committee just screwed the Gophers on seeding.

This is the same thing that happened at Ohio State Hellickson's last 2 years. Great recruits, great expectations and then the injuries wipe you out and change everything. I hope Jay doesn't have a run of luck like that and we lose another great coach.

I am going to go with a combination of these things:

    1. Injuries-just too many injuries all year long. I think we only had everyone back for the Ohio State dual and there is something to be said about consistency.
    2. Morale-when top guys are out its hard to stay motivated when you have no faith in their back-ups (Mellmer, McPhail). How many of our duals do we win if DS gets a dec instead of Mellmer giving up six or five? Its at least four duals, maybe more.
    3. Weight-we have a number of guys who have stayed at the same weight for four years. Reiter, Rivera, DS, C.P, Dretsch, Kish...cutting hard for two to three years is not easy and makes it difficult to remain consistent.
    4. Been There, Done That-I really don't think that had much to do with it but guys like Dretsch rarely raised there game when it counted. Looks like Iowa's sophomores by in large were able to meet the intensity of the season. It will be interesting to see if those Sophs can keep the intensity for two more years. I am guessing with guys like Metcalf in the room, that won't be a problem.
    5. Leadership-I think Trusty touched on this and I kind of agree that just because you have seniors doesn't mean anyone is stepping up and stoking the fire. You almost have TOO many seniors if that's possible although the fact that it was their final season should have been motivation enough for a guy like Dretsch.

They were really led by a Sophomore - at least it seemed like Ness was going to go after it each and every time out for SEVEN WHOLE minutes.
Those of you who think you know it all really annoy those of us who actually do ;)
