When you are at the top you are bound to take some ribbing from the envious majority but for the last 2-3 months themat.com has been nothing but a Brent Metcalf Manlove-fest. It was actually getting a bit disturbing. I think it is ironic that Iowa fans are some of the most passionate homers around (nothing wrong with passionate support for your team by the way IMO) but get their backs up quick if someone "disrespects" them by showing the same passion for their own squad. Let's be careful to distinguish "hate" towards Iowa from "ardent support" for your own team of choice.
Yeah, there has been some good-natured ribbing especially, as CYCLONE pointed out, about the Hawkeye fans rush to crown IOWA national champions and a dynasty before even a single match was wrestled at Nationals. They have a great young team but injuries, transfers and weight issues will have a lot more to say about success over the next few years than anyone wants to admit. That article seems like nothing more than a coach trying to psych his athletes up with the age old "us against them, we get no respect" line. I think it particularly ironic that this article mention the Patriots since their coaching staff pretty much perfected this motivational tactic. I can't blame Hawk fans and coaches for emulating the best though.
As Architeuthicus pointed out in a previous post, even as a partisan for another team, I find a certain comfort in the cosmic symmetry of Iowa being at the top again. When the dust clears at Nationals, if Iowa stands at the top I say enjoy the view and ignore the few true haters. As Mell Brooks said, "It's good to be the King!"

Even that being said, they haven't won this year yet. They probably will, but don't count your chickens before they hatch.

Its good to hear the coaches and athletes exhibit such confidence but I am not sharing it with them. This could be the most wide open race in years and probably will end up close no matter who wins. But I can say that I have lived in IC for 4 years and have loved wrestling my whole life and this is the first time in my time here that this town has gotten behind this team again, and its made for amazing buzz and excitement. I walked into Scheel's today hoping to find a couple shirts to don in StL, and what did I find but over a dozen different Iowa Wrestling shirts. While I am in no way going to claim a dynasty is happening, it feels really good to be back in a position where you are the team being chased. This can only be good for the sport in my opinion in that the Iowa fan base is almost certainly one of the top 5 (being modest ) and to have those rivalries come back in full force and Iowa being thrown into the parity that is college wrestling this year makes for more attention and press being driven towards the sport we all love so much! See you all in St Louie and GO HAWKS!

"Oh, they're two teams combined into 1, they have an unfair advantage, blah blah blah." The hate is there. Most of the Hawkeye fan posters not named WillyMan don't get into it over somebody supporting their team, but when they say negative things about Iowa...well, yeah, some of the fans start to bristle.

I think we are in the wrong sport if we are waiting for superlatives to abound about our teams. Unless you are unbiased as some are paid to be, its going to be an "us" against "them" mentality until the end.
If a team is lucky, they may get a tip of the cap at the end of the season.
I actually think some Iowa fans are waiting for some validation from the wrestling community that they are back. I think its going to take a little bit more than what they have accomplished this year but an NCAA title is a good start.

Well, this is no different. Minny took the hits when they were at the top of their game. Okie State, the Pats, Yankees, every top dog bears the wrath of fandom.
However, it seems it's only the Hawkeyes that can't take the heat. Just a pack of little weenies that don't like getting toasted lese they get gobbled up.
Try whining on Gable's shoulder, see where he sends you. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
