Thread: Tom Brands

    Default Tom Brands

OK, I did not witness the Big-10's because Comcast sucks and they piss all the content providers off and all I get is crappy little CSTV. So, I listened to the Penn State broadcast. Can someone who was there; and is even somewhat objective, please verify or not the behavior of Tom Brands being over the top and subject to penalty.

This announcer made it seem like Brands was constantly on the mat inside the circle. Is he as bad as the guy says, or is Brands getting the special treatment?

    Objectivity is requested!

I am not very objective so I am certainly a bad person to ask here. The only thing I can say on the matter is that Brands was kind of pissing multiple coaches off and some of his wrestlers were starting to get in on the action as well.

Then I hear a kid like Metcalf come off the mat after beating DS in a very physical, much anticipated match and he has nothing but class and showed relative respect for his opponent. He came across confident but not cocky. So who is the coach and who is the student/athlete?

If my son wrestled D1 and took the mat at Big Ten's and his opponent and coach acted like that I guess I would have a hard time explaining to my son why someone would act that way. My son will shake hands with his opponent before and after the match and look into his eyes when he says "good match". He would act with humility and class or he will not participate in sports. I can only control what my son learns and I can't be responsible for others but I would hope that parents of kids who are considering their options consider this before sending their kids to wrestle in a program.

Personally, I think Brands is just very emotional. He was as a wrestler and he is as a coach. I think he will look back after this year and realize that he has done a good job of making his athletes better but not necessarily be happy with the way he did it all the time. I am happy for the kids at Iowa and the program in general but I think Brands has a little growing up to do.

I heard things along the same line. All I can say is that I heard it best from Coach John Smith in one of Flo's interviews with him. You're not only coaching them to be great individuals on the mat but also off the mat. I mean the wrestlers idolize him so whatever he does will directly affect them.

Yeah, that was my only real concern. John Smith didn't do a very good job of putting down any of JH's antics either when he was in a position to do so, so "hello pot!" from, "the kettle".

    LOL.

What I have heard (not objective). Slaton showed some poor behavior after his match with Reiter and he was taken aside by Coach Schwab and it was made clear that his behavior was not acceptable. Coach Brands is intense, firey, ect. Sometimes that behavior comes off to some as "classless". Tom is real competive guy and like Gable he will need to reign himself in once in awhile. Gable always had a coach on staff that could do that J Rob, Mark Johnson, Jimmy Z. Brands has a few excitable guys who are still competing with Schwab and Zadick. Hand needs to be that guy for Tommy.

No matter what people will find something to hate about Brands. After all he beat up wrestlers from a lot of schools around the country when he was competing. Plus he coaches at Iowa.

All that being said, I think I was pretty accurate in my assessment. Does Brands really need an entire "posse"? Maybe a few less corner coaches, water bottle carriers and jacket cleaners needed on Iowa's staff?

BTW, I am not a Brands hater, you know that by now.

I don't get the posse reference.

Gofer, you don't have to agree with me even though I'm right.

PS. I didn't even mention the "punch" that Reiter threw at Slaton.

Edit my previous post. People are jealous of Tom Brands keen fashion sense, he's cutting edge.

In the case of Brands and Smith I think it is a matter of winning and winning only. Neither one of them cares about what lasting impact they will have on their wrestlers or on their school. They care about themselves and their "legacy" and hopefully their athletes will see through this. Everyone has their own coaching style but at the end of the day these are student athletes and most of them won't be doing this professionally. They will be getting jobs like all of us and will hopefully benefit from their college experience. I had a coach in high school that got up and walked away because I was losing a match at districts. I ended up coming back and winning and qualified for state. But years later I will never forget him giving up on me.

Maybe he knew walking away from your match was the only way to motivate you.
