Should really be on any list.

I'd be curious as to how hard Penn State went after him before making the Cael hire.

I know he had some preliminary discussions with Penn State. I don't know how serious either party was though.

I heard from a friend who said people told him that Pollard was in IC talking to Gable and Brands...which one I don't know. I don't know if this rumor has any basis in fact but just thought I'd throw it out there so if it turns out to be true I can say I told you so.

I'm just spitballing here, but here's another thought:

Gable is THE coach everyone looks up to. He knows how to motivate, how to peak, how to get everything out of his wrestlers. But he's old.

Heskett is supposedly a good recruiter, and he's a great guy who wrestled his ass off for ISU. He young and doesn't have a ton of coaching experience, though.

Hire Gable and Heskett as co-coaches. Give them a year or two together where Heskett can learn from Gable, and after that Heskett will be the head coach.

Crazy? You bet. But, is it any crazier than Cael leaving ISU?

For the record, my money is NOT on this scenario.

I know that it was not very serious on PSU's end

Hahaha... For an ISU fan that would be a phenomenal situation. I just can't imagine why Gable would go back into coaching--especially at ISU after 35+ years. It seems like he has definitely left his ISU blood in the past and is totally an Iowa guy now. Maybe he would do it just to build up wrestling, though.

I really don't want to see Heskett leave tOSU yet, but I know it's bound to happen relatively soon, so it might as well be to his alma mater. Best of luck to him if it happens!

EDIT: After listening to Gable's interview on Wrestling411, I see that he says there is a slight possibility that he would go back. That would be AWESOME!

Not a bad idea. Good for ISU wrestling. Good for wrestling in Iowa. Good for Heskett (if he's healthy enough.) Good for Gable to keep ties to his alma mater (if he's healthy.enough, too.) Good for the Hawkeyes to keep the rivalry going (and the crowds large.)

ISU IS Gable's alma mater. He has a vested interested in their success. A lot of schools consult with him for his opinions on coaching selections.
