I know this is not going to go over well but its my personal opinion. I kind of agree with what Virginia Tech did in not giving the wrestlers their release. I would not have a hard time with Iowa State if they also did not grant the releases as well.

I just wish it was consistent which I guess with the rules it never will be. These are just kids but its obviously an important decision that they are making in picking a coach or picking a university. I think if the rules were consistent then you would see kids picking the UNIVERSITY they really wanted to go to versus the coach since the school is not going anywhere.

I hope all his recruits stay put and he builds his program at PSU the right way. The whole transferring because your coach is leaving is just bad for the sport, IMO.

I agree with that only in part. I do think it is good for the sport to have wrestlers stay at their school but I have the NCAA rule requiring them to do so. If a coach comes to my house, sit's in my living room and tells me how excited he is to have me in his room, how great of a fit I'll be for State U's wrestling team, and how he can't wait to see what we can do in the next 4-5 years, but then he can leave and go somewhere else as soon as he gets a better offer. I think that if a coach leave a wrestler should be able to follow w/o consequences. It's the biggest example of a double standard that there is.

When the coaches move around like men on a chess board, its a little tougher to ask the athletes to stick it out. When coaches stay at one school, like JRob or John Smith, it's easier to apply rules consistently. When you put as much time and energy into a sport as these wrestlers do, their choice of coach is going to take on more importance than their choice of school. I'm not saying this is good, but it's understandable. I may be mistaken, but the rules seem to enforced less consistently on the so-called "non-revenue" sports.

I don't know. I really think it is ok whatever they do, stay or go. That's just my personal opinion. If they want to honor their word and stay that is great. But if they want to leave with the coach they believe they can be the best with, can you really fault them for that?

Not having the transfer restrictions could kill a sport at a school and expose it to potential elimination. It is conceivable that a significant number in the ISU room would seek to opt out without the need for release. It would devistate the program overnight and if so few stayed behind the perception the school could no longer be competitive and could place the team in the hands of the reaper.

Life's not the breaths you take, the breathing in and out that gets you through the day ain't what it's all about. It's the moments that take your breath away.

Any type of doom and gloom in terms of Iowa State dropping their program as a result of this is ridiculous.

The situation there compared to the situation at Virginia Tech when Tom Brands left isn't even remotely comparable

This comment was not directed at ISU it was toward justification for the transfer restrictions. But if you take a program with a lesser reputation and the wrestlers follow their coach where ever and or head to other schools, then I can see the AD throwing up his hands and pulling the plug if there are not enough bodies in the room to be reasonably competitive. Particularly in these trying times of collegiate finances.

Some wrestlers grow up loving a particular school and may make their decision based on wearing the colors. Others may sign on to a school based on the coach and what that coach can do for them in terms of obtaining their personal goals.

If these ISU wrestlers love the school...then stay. If they signed on because of Cael Sanderson, then let them leave with him. Remember, the school uses Cael as a recruitment tool...and when he leaves, it's like a sucker punch to the wrestler. You can't tell them "I'm glad we got Cael to lure you into this school, but too damn bad that he's leaving"
