It is quite possible Sanderson was confronted with a reduction in schlarship budget. Non-resident scholarships cost more to the department than in state. If Pollard cuts the total financial value to be offered at 9.9, ISU will be forced to find more in-state athletes at in-resident rates versus out of state schollies and steers the coach into direct competition with Iowa for the talent. It handcuffs the coach's ability to talk to and attract out of state talent.
Very interesting point. If Pollard did that, it was short-sighted. He should have made the cuts in some of the other sports that stink more.

Most unfortuate if he does leave. No question it kills ISU's chance the team title next year and would open the door for many others to ask for a release.
I remember hearing that Moore got a release from Penn State and they let him go anywhere but a Big Ten school. Sounds like I was misinformed.

How often do redshirt athletes complete their studies in four years?
If they graduate, don't they have to get accepted into the Grad school to continue wrestling? Do athletic departments have enough pull to get their athletes into a grad program? Seems like a dicey proposition, I don't know about ISU, but most Big Ten grad schools are world class.

Depends on the STUDENT-athlete. Josh Haines finished his undergrad degree in 3 1/2 years so was taking graduate courses in 07-08. He had a career ending injury so the athletic department picked up his scholarship and he finished his Masters degree this year.

You would think so, but I don't know for sure.

Yes, Iowa State has a world class grad school--but mostly in the sciences. Key developments in both the atom bomb (Spedding's eggs) and the computer (Atanasoff-Berry) were made there.

Varner is a criminal justice major.

What will David Taylor do? Can he follow Cael to Penn State?

ISU will have a tough decision to make. It would be extremely difficult to see a national title condender be eliminated. But it's hard to do that to the kids when, let's face facts, they came to ISU to wrestle for Cael...not because it's isu(though that could play a slight role)

That's probably true for the out-of-state blue chippers. In-state, ISU has a rich wrestling history with some of the all-time greats and lots of illustrious alums. It fits some Midwestern kids better than Iowa or Minnesota. Many of these kids will go to ISU regardless. The same is true for PSU. Some kids there will go there regardless if it's Sanderson, Sunderland, or anyone else.

Didn't this year's Seniors come to wrestle for Bobby Douglas?
I know Cael was an asst. so in actuality they meant have been coming just for him.

On thing that turned me off on the Hokeyes that ditched VaTech, was when the admin. asked them to wait until they named the new coach and the new coach met with them before they made their decision, they declined and were absolutely refused to consider staying. It semed that was when Va Tech started playing hardball (At least that is my recollection of what happened)

The last time I read an LOI, it specifically references the athlete is bound to the agreement regardless of who is coach. By asking that question and their refusal to consider the new coach, it documented the fact they were leaving soley because the coach was leaving. That's all the evidence VTech needed to make the non-release stick. If they had said they hate the area and want to home to Momma, they probably would have gotten the release.
