All sounds about right. Its all a pitance compared to the wrestling camp income however.

I wish that college football and basketball coaches made the same.

That's not really a fair comparison. Wrestling does not and cannot bring in as many spectators as football (just by the size of the stadiums) and outside of Iowa, wrestling does not bring in as many spectators as basketball. Beyond that, donations and merchandise sales bring in much more money than wrestling. The market also puts the price for D-1 football and basketball coaches at the level it's at.

At Missouri, for example, Brian Smith has brought Missouri to levels it has never before seen. His salary went up after MU took 3rd at NCAAs and he was given an extension, ending any rumors of Brian leaving MU for greener pastures. Gary Pinkel also brought Mizzou football to places it has never been- finished ranked 4th, and along with that, sold out the Cotton Bowl and Faurot Field for most home games. Though Brian also boosted attendance and donations considerably, it just can't be compared to what football did. So Pinkel was awarded a raise and an extension - putting his salary in the high six figures and ending any rumors of him leaving. Basically, both coaches were awarded justly.

The AD at Rutgers just announced that he signed Vivian Springer to a new 7 year deal last October. No one asked why he's just announcing now.

The feature clause in this deal, "What he get she gets." He, is Greg Schiano or any other head football coach. Stringer gets the same base salary has the football coach and the same rights to summer camp revenue, 100% less facility lease expenses of $20 per camper per day. The difference lies in the bonus package which can take Schiano to $2.2 mil while Stringer would get $1.7 mil if she maxed out. Big East title, National title plus 100% graduation rate, excluding intercollegiate transfers.

The announcement happened to come 2 days after her ladies team knocked off No.1 and undefeated UConn.

Actually a sports popularity dictates its stadium size, not the other way around. You can't say wrestling isn't popular enough because it doesn't have big enough stadiums. In addition, of course you can't sell merchandise if you don't have spectators. If the sports gets more popular, they will sell more merchanise and need bigger stadiums and arenas. (see MMA).

Missouri wrestles at the Hearnes Center, an arena that holds 14K. The top draw of fans we've ever gotten is 6K. Welsh-Ryan Arena, where Northwestern wrestles, holds around 10K. As we noted on the Northwestern/Minny thread, there were tons of empty seats. The arenas have the seats - the people aren't there.

Thank you. I was trying to explain this to someone on the other forum and they just ain't believing it.

Women's basketball coaching salaries (note this is the coaches salaries, not the gender of the coach) are inflated because schools have to try to balance salaries due to gender quota concerns.

Other coaches get what the market demands. I provided an example of how many women's lacrosse coaches got a nice bump two years ago when Navy lured Cindy Timchal from Maryland. Suddenly other schools renegotiated contracts of some of the top coaches to keep them in place, knowing Maryland was looking for a new hire.
