ISU would have to give them a release in order for them to compete next year. That is the norm and what usually happens. VA Tech was pissed that Brands was leaving so they took it out on the wrestlers and did not give them releases, thus they lost a year of elegibility.
Thanks for posting the link to the Des Moines Register story...
Some things going through my mind...
Wonder what Kerry McCoy, Ken Chertow and the other Penn State alums who, a couple days ago, thought you had a real shot at the job, suddenly think about this outsider leaping into the lead?
And... if Cael says no, and one of these guys gets the job... would they always feel like you were the second choice?
And... if Cael was offered the job, unless the money was as shockingly huge as mentioned in this thread... would he take it?
And... if he is being offered upper 6 figures (or more) per year, does the coaching salary landscape suddenly change. Once you're paying one guy that much, will guys like Brands and Ryan be happy with less than $200,000?
If the numbers being tossed around are accurate, it could be the beginning of the end for collegiate wrestling. Only a handful of schools might be willing to compete at that price since it will drive the cost for coaches in others sports on campus.
Just curious, but have there been any rumblings out there that ISU may cut wrestling? Even a hint would surely drive Sanderson to investigate other opportunties. A significant budget cut could be enough of a push. These are tough times financially and who knows what crosses the minds of an AD and the BoTs.
Given the possibility of the flip to PSU, I'm sure it's not the money sparking his interest and it could be a tactical approach to gaining assurance from above for program continuation.
Life's not the breaths you take, the breathing in and out that gets you through the day ain't what it's all about. It's the moments that take your breath away.
There have been no talk whatsoever that ISU will drop wrestling. They would be one of the very last schools to do that. Wrestling is way to important to too many people around here to let that happen weather it is the team they like or not. There are many other programs that would be on the chopping block at ISU before wrestling.
I talked to a few of my cyclone freinds and they all said that if he left they would be Penn St fans. They would probably change their minds and go back to ISU after a few weeks but they will be mad. None of them really believe that he will leave though. I think it's gonna be like if their parents were getting divorced for them. They like him that much. One said he doesnt really care if Sanderson stays or not. He might have been feeling a little betrayed by the whole situation.
All of them said they don't want the Fanny Pack, Bobby D, back. But they would be happy having Bono running the team. I asked one of them if he would like Terry Brands to be the next coach there, his response was classic. He said, "Terry Brands would rather slit his own throat than coach at ISU." I agree.
I still don't think Cael is gone. I can't imagine why he'd leave unless there was friction between him and the administration, or PSU was offering an obscene amount of money. People are saying he'd have a better chance at recruiting at PSU, but who has he recruited and not got because he was at ISU?
10 returning starters from the 3rd place team at NCAAs
#1 overall recruit coming next year
Fanbase who worships him
$$$$$ - ?
You do the math..... I'll do the alfredo!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
If I were an ISU fan, I would be very upset, especially considering the deja vu aspect of it all. But the rest of us should look at it as a man who is taking the opportunity to do a job he loves, and get paid a shitload of cash for doing it. Please don't act like you wouldn't do the same.
