I was talking with an adminstrator this weekend and this was a key point that was mentioned when they asked about Penn State's camp monies. Could very well be major part of the justification for a higher salary.
However it is a slippery slope for a school to depend so heavily on outside money to pay salaries. It the major benefactor becomes disgruntled, do they then control department decisions (think Oregon)?
If the money is no longer there for any number of reasons, is PSU contracturaly obligated to pay the salary? If so, it could cause great harm to their budget.
And then there is the title ix issue that may rear it's head, depending on who is appointed to head the DOE's OCR. Unless PSU has already thought of that and boosted the salaries of coaches of some womens' teams.

For those of you interested in the historical aspect of Cael's move as seen by some/many Iowa State fans, a story I wrote for the news website Examiner.com

Cael is seizing opportunity. You can't fault him for that. And as a PSU Wrestling fan and the Dad of a 7 year old who dreams of Wrestling for PSU...I understand perfectly why Cael made this decision.
Welcome to the State of Wrestling, Cael. My son Jumped for joy and can't wait to see you in the corner next season.
Go Lions!!!!!!

Thanks for the link Mark.

"There has been a lot of speculation as to why I have decided to take the job at PSU. I have taken the job because of the long term opportunity and limitless potential of Penn State Wrestling. When I say opportunity, I am not talking about money. I have answered many questions where people are speculating that I got a million dollar contract (dont know where that came from) or something ridiculous like that. The truth is that the offer I received was less then a 10% increase from what I made last year. "
That sounds much closer to reality rather than the mass hysteria and dollar numbers tossed about last week. PSU may have made up the loss of camp revenues so the overall salary might be around $200,000/yr.
Re: Cael Sanderson to Penn State University
There is only one person who would be most deserving and worthy of the ISU job and that is Terry Brands.
If Gable can go to Iowa, Terry can go to ISU. This would be great for wrestling and for the state of Iowa. Besides, Terry and Tom are used to doing battle againist each other, they have been doing it since they were born. They would create a frenzy in wrestling and put on one heck of a show.
Everyone knows Terry bleeds black and gold, but he deserves to be a D1 head coach and would be the best fit.
The only thing - who's the gas and who's the fire; it would be an explosion.

Fair or not, these days we get to examine these matters under a more powerful microscope. Pardon me for being a little more skeptical of his purported reasons for leaving. As for the high school talent argument, if you look at Iowa State's current team, only two of the 10 starters (Clark and Mueller) are from Iowa. It's not like he had trouble attracting good wrestlers from wherever.
