AD Pollard's remarks on Cael leaving:

    http://www.cyclones.com/ViewArticle....ATCLID=3722124

“During the last week, Cael and I talked numerous times and we had several in-depth and personal discussions about this decision. Those talks included me asking what, if anything, could we do to keep him at Iowa State. I also asked President (Gregory) Geoffroy, Bill Fennelly and Greg McDermott to reach out to Cael and they all did so. In the end, Cael said that he appreciated everything Iowa State and our fans had done for him but he believes winning a national championship will be easier at Penn State. He said the high school talent in Pennsylvania and surrounding states is the best in the country and the kids in that area grow up wanting to wrestle for the Nittany Lions. He also said their overall athletics department resources are the best in the country.”
    ...

“We will begin a national search for his replacement immediately and focus our full attention on identifying and recruiting a new coach who can add to the Iowa State championship legacies of former coaches Hugo Otopalik, Dr. Harold Nichols and Jim Gibbons.”

It does seem strange that goinng from a program that finished 3rd (and probably could have won) to a program that finished way down in the standings is making it easier to win a National championship. Maybe down the road, but probably not right away.

I haven't read the whole thread- does anyone actually know how much $$ Cael is making at his new job? Methinks a large increase in salary is a huge reason for the move. Not that this is a bad or unworthy thing- getting a promotion is good.

It's has been reported (correctly or incorrectly) that Cael contacted Penn St. first. If that IS the case do you think he was telling himself "I'll apply for this opening because it will mean significantly more money"?

In the Rev Wrestling radio interview (linked above) and in print, Cael has denied that the money is the deal. On the other hand, in the radio interview, he didn't articulate very well why he was leaving. Jamie Pollard did a better job of giving a reason: talking about the high school talent and the athletic department at Penn State. Not that Iowa State is short in either of these categories.

At this point, we don't know what Cael is being paid in his new job, although the rumors here suggest it is significant. A raise is the only explanation that makes sense to me.

People have been speculating 2.5 million for 5 years with a big signing bonus, but Sanderson said on TDR that was bogus. He declined to say what he was getting though...

    Begging the question:

Did Cael contact Penn State FIRST? And if so, was his reasoning that it would mean significantly more money?

From what I heard, he was contacted early on but declined an interview, then contacted them back later expressing interest.

Steve and Matclone, I don't know much about the situatiion. I just get skeptical when people say "money isn't the deal", especially when a change of scenery DOES mean a large increase in money. Especially when Sanderson's current team is arguably the favorite (or at least a favorite) to win a title right away.

Regardless of Sanderson's actual reasons for leaving, I'm not sure that claiming "I want to win national championships" is the best PR move. I personally don't care where he coaches, but if I was an ISU fan I would be pretty upset. Who among us wouldn't want a large increase in salary? However, claiming you left your 3rd-place school because they can't win a championship.. that hurts.

We don't know who contacted whom first. For argument's sake, let's assume that Cael contacted Penn State. Why would he do such a thing? Because he was unhappy at Iowa State? No evidence of such. No evidence that the AD doesn't like him, or the wrestlers, or the fans. He was the man. ISU is/was in a very strong position to challenge for the national championship next year.

On the other hand, Cael probably has some sense of his market value as a coach in the wrestling world--that is to say, he's on top.

I know little about the workings of these things, but are boosters prohibited from contacting coaches?
