Default Minnesota v. Iowa Predictions & Discussion

We've seen quite a bit of discussion about one of the match ups in this dual here today. Anyone else interested in the other nine?

125: #1 Jayson Ness v. #3 Charlie Falck
133: #2 Mack Reiter v. #4 Joey Slaton
141: #4 Manny Rivera v. #10 Dan LeClere
149: #1 Dustin Schlatter v. #3 Brent Metcalf
157: #7 CP Schlatter v. #16 Ryan Morningstar
165: NR Scott Glasser, or NR Tyler Safratowich v. #1 Mark Perry
174: #11 Gabe Dretsch v. #3 Jay Borschel
184: #5 Roger Kish v. #8 Phil Keddy
197: NR Justin Bronson v. NR Chad Beatty
285: NR Yura Malamura, or NR Ben Berhow v. #6 Matt Fields

One thing I've forgotten the various times I've worked this dual out both on here, both in my head, and on here, is that Dretsch has actually beaten Borschel already this year. Might be important to some, not important to others. Borschel has wrestled better since their match at UNO, but as we know just about anything can, and will likely happen during a Gabe Dretsch match.

If Kish isn't 100%, Dretsch stealing 174 would be massive for the Gophers.

One idea that could be fun for this thread, although I doubt it'd be stuck to. We've got about ten days until this dual goes off, maybe we could concentrate on one match up per day in this thread?

Fields will NOT get a fall. I will wager a year's signature on that one.

125: Ness dec Falck 3-0 MN
Ness has won all the meetings in college, I see no reason that will change.

133: Reiter dec Slaton 6-0 MN
Reiter has only lost to Fanthorpe, which I don't believe will happen again. Reiter and Slaton have the same strengths, I think Mack is stronger at them.

141: Rivera dec LeClere 9-0 MN
Just gotta go with Manny here.

149: Schlatter dec Metcalf 12-0 MN
I'll go with the guy who is wrestling in front of the home crowd.

157: Schlatter dec Morningstar 15-0 MN
No reason Schlatter won't win.

165: Perry fall whoever 15-6 MN
When Perry is on, he's on. I think he'll be on.

174: Borschel dec Dretsch 15-9 MN
I have been more impressed by Borschel than Dretsch, but like Jensen says, Dretsch never does what he's supposed to.

184: Kish dec Keddy 18-9 MN
If Kish is not healthy, Keddy can win.

197: Beatty dec Bronson 18-12 MN
Beatty has wrestled real well and I figured I'd throw Iowa a bone.

285: Fields dec whoever 18-15 MN
I think Fields can get the major if he tries, but who knows.

The only thing I am sure of is that I am not going to be right.

125: Ness dec Falck 3-0 MN
A year ago I would have called this to Minny with bonus but not this year.

133: Reiter dec Slaton 6-0 MN
A barn burner, I am going with experience here over youthful exhuberance.

141: Rivera dec LeClere 9-0 MN
Again, experience over youth. Manny looking tough this year.

149: Metcalf dec Schlatter 9-3 MN
I REALLY like Metcalf and I think that if DS sits and waits for something to happen in this match then Metcalf is going to find a takedown here and there. I like Metcalf in the first one like DS against Esposito in the first one. DS hasn't seen someone come after him like Metcalf will in at least 12-18 months.

157: Schlatter dec Morningstar 12-3 MN
Morningstar coming together but C.P. has found some offense.

165: Perry maj Saf/Dretsch 12-7 MN
I will be disappointed if J doesn't give Saf the match here since Saf kept it to a decision or barely a decision last year I think.

174: Borschel dec Dretsch 12-10 MN
This one breaks my heart because I truly feel like this is a match that Dretsch can win. Borschel will wrestle a full seven minutes as he has shown against Gavin and others. Borschel can get sloppy but he's aggressive. I will go with aggressive and Borschel.

184: Kish fall Keddy 18-10 MN
The rumor of Kish's demise has been greatly exhaggerated. Kish is a second half wrestler and starts with the fall over a red hot Keddy to get the Gopher's crowd jumping out of their seats.

197: Beatty dec Bronson 18-13 MN
Bronson does the moonwalk for seven minutes where he pushes forward while stalling and Beatty comes out on top after seven minutes of pure confusion.

285: Fields m dec Malamura 18-17 MN
I think Malamura relishes his role as the "closer" and knows the importance of staying off of his back. He has shown an ability to stay with heavies on their feet and an almost amazing talent of getting out on bottom against some pretty damn big heavies. Fields beats him up pretty good but Malamura keeps it under a technical fall and wrestles all seven minutes.

What an amazing match. I am calling this the dual of the year.

Okay Jensen. I will comment on Ness-Falck. I think Ness pulls out a close one. I see Ness countering Falck and scoring a couple of takedowns on counters. If Falck can push the action and not extend himself he could win with one takedown.

By the way goferphan, glad to be the first Husker fan on here. Excited about this year but can't wait for the next couple of years.

125: #1 Jayson Ness v. #3 Charlie Falck

I just don't see how Falck pulls this one off. These numbers just keep running through my head, 23-1, 24-0, 16, 75%.

I think it'll be much more like the match at NCAA's, rather than the two times that Ness majored him during the regular season. It all depends on what really happens early on though, during the season, in both matches Ness got early takedowns, and just rolled over Falck from there. At NCAA's, Falck did a nice job parrying Ness' shots, and the match was scoreless going into the second.

On the mat, we all know about Ness, but Falck actually had riding time for a little while during their match at NCAA's, so it'll be pivotal for Ness if he gets on bottom to get up and out. Ness did wind up erasing it with his ride out after his third period takedown.

Call this match something like, 6-1 Ness. Two TD's, an escape, and riding time, to an escape for Falck. As Ness has shown though this year, he can put just about anyone in the country to their backs, he showed he could do it to Falck last year.

It would be MASSIVE for Minnesota if he could steal a bonus point at this weight. I wouldn't expect it, but the possibility is still there.

Minnesota 3 Iowa 0

I don't speculate on Hawk matches, but if you folks think the Hawks will give away ALL the lighter weights to Minny, you're living in your own dreams. Expect this meet to be hard-fought and close. I predict that there will be no falls by either side, unless Perry is healthy and brings his A-game, which doesn't seem to be the case right now. How is Kish's back?
