Hawkeye wrestler Mark Perry, Jr., was arrested on Thursday for driving while suspended.

According to police documents, Perry, a senior from Stillwater, Okla., was arrested at 4:22 p.m. at 1421 Coral Ridge Ave. in Coralville.

Online records show that Perry, who was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week on Wednesday, was ticketed and fined for an insurance violation in 2006, speeding in 2004, and failure to display his vehicle registration in 2003.

Perry, who wrestles at 165 pounds, is ranked second nationally. Last season, Perry was both NCAA and Big Ten champion. He named an All-American in 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 seasons.

Seriously? Why would someone do something like this? It always befuddles me to no end. What a stupid decision.

What is it about natural talent and ability to make one think that they are above making dumb decisions like this?

Sorry but the violations cited and periods don't add up to a suspension.

MV points, if any, for the '03 missing registration and probably the speeding violation in '04 were likely expired from the point calculation for being over 3 years old. The insurance violation usually isn't worth any MV points but would result in a fine.

How about his little escapade after winning the title last March, loss of license due to alcohol ? There must be another violation out there that caused a suspension....failing to pay parking tickets maybe ? The judge will suspend you and you won't even know it till you are yanked over. I'll hazard a guess the suspension was for something he probably wasn't even aware of it.

Every state is different in how they suspend licenses. For a short period in Illinois, any driver under the age of 21 who had more than one ticket conviction over a three year period had their license suspended. My license was suspended for that exact reason. So many suspensions piled up that the state couldn't deal with it and the repealed the law. That didn't really help with my insurance rates, though!

Yeah, its tough to go off what was said in the article.. Speeding itself is enough to get a suspension if he was going fast enough, couple that with a couple other minor violations and there ya have it.

The article didn't mention a public intoxication event he had a year or two ago, so his whole driving record may also not be included

If everything is there, it doesn't seem to be that terrible of a record.. Not many people can claim a perfect driving record, and most of the mess usually does occur at a younger age.

Well, I'm not sure what it is.

What I wrote earlier was sort of a knee jerk reaction. What I wanted to say, but didn't is why would someone who has the opportunity and ability like he does put himself in any situation that would risk his chances to repeat and build upon his accomplishments.

I say this about Professional athletes all the time. I understand he isn't a pro and kids make mistakes, thats fine. I just hate to see someone get arrested and have that jepordize their season or more importantly life.

I should have said this initially and when I read back it looks assinine (what I wrote). The natural talent statement was ameant to mean someone who is far more talented and accomplished than I am. His talent has nothing to do with his bad decisions.

If he didn't pay any of the other fines (insurance , speeding, etc) it would result in suspension. Since he dosen't get paid as much as if he was at Oklahoma State or Minnesota he might not have been able to pay the large fine for the insurance violation. j/k
