Default Minnesota wrestling fans, this must really be blowing your mind away

I mean the emergence of Iowa, Iowa State and Penn State this year as challengers to Minnesota supremacy must have been totally unforseen to your ego. Am I right?

No, its not. Its not like the Gophers didn't lose to Hofstra last year, and almost give away NCAA's.

Cael's boys are all a year older, Iowa has the Hokeyes riding high, and Penn State has a great senior leader in Davis, and a bunch of quality younger guys.

I think to the casual MN fan, much like the casual hawk fans from years past, it might have been a shock. But to people in the know, We knew from a dual stand point that the road would be tough.

Was it a total shock to OSU a two years ago when they faced their bumps in the road? it was certainly more of a shock than this is.

Going into the season there were too many holes to have a "supreme" dual team. 165, 197, and 285 were going to be uncertainties going into the season. On top of that, and I'm going to get killed for saying this especially here, but 157 is very inconsistent. 157 is going to e the weight where a lot of the season hinges this year because with the toss up weights, we need wins there.

So, to answer your question, NO. It isn't a shot to our collective ego's (at least mine) because if you are an objective fan, you know that a) nothing is for certain in the season, and b) there were big holes going in to the season from a dual perspective. (imo, 165 is less of a hile and more of a first year starter, 285 is sort of the same thing, but we were spoiled with Cole)

Also, with the teams you named, the only one that surprises me really is Penn State. They are a talented squad, but I didn't forsee them being as good as they are.

Hofstra last year was a shock. ISU is not a shock........Cael is on his way IMO in Gable's footsteps where he will end up a more successful coach than he was a wrestler.

That's impossible. ISU has already lost a match!

I have been shocked by Minny's "fall" from the top. I though with only losing one wrestler from last year they would run over everyone this year. They won NCAA's last year even though they basically had a horrible tournament. ISU wrestled a great tournament to come in 2nd and then lost three seniors. I did not think they would be close to Minny.

The big surprises for me are that Reiter has not fully recovered and CP seems to have regressed.

    BTW, good topic Big.

I guess I would be concerned if I thought all of our horses were wrestling at their best and we still weren't winning...that being said, Reiter, Saf/C.P. and Glasser are sure to take steps forward this year...I just can't figure out Dretsch...he seems to be possessed by a really weird wrestler this year and has this style that is almost unbearable to watch...you know the kind...the kid who joined your wrestling team as a sophomore and had never wrestled before but had the build for it and won against average competition...he has no technique and no plan going into a match...that being said...i think he could win or lose against any wrestlers in the Top 15 at any given time...

I WILL be surprised if I don't see some of these guys pick their game up a little bit as the season goes on...
