So... what exactly did he do to "earn" this suspension?

Perry out for Iowa State meet

Iowa will have to take on the top-ranked wrestling team in the country without one of its top wrestlers.

Defending NCAA champion Mark Perry Jr. won’t be in the lineup Sunday when the No. 4 Hawkeyes wrestle Iowa State in Ames.

Perry, a senior 165-pounder, will serve a one-meet suspension after being disqualified during Iowa’s Nov. 24 meet against Old Dominion at the St. Edward Duals.

“I can’t articulate it exactly because I haven’t actually read it,” said Iowa associate athletics director Fred Mims, who oversees wrestling. “I’ve been informed about the misconduct he had at the last (tournament). The rule says if you are disqualified for misconduct, you are required to sit out the next scheduled meet.”

Perry had been prepared to sit out the UNI Open this past Sunday, but the tournament was canceled because of inclement weather. Several Iowa wrestlers are expected to compete Saturday at the Jim Fox Open in Dubuque, but Perry wouldn’t be allowed to serve the suspension by sitting out that tournament.

“That’s not a scheduled meet,” Mims said. “We had our schedule submitted to the Big Ten at the start of the year and the next meet is what he’s required to sit out. We waited for interpretation on that, and we got the interpretation on that today, so that’s the way it is.”

Thus, Iowa will likely use freshman Jake Kerr in place of Perry against sixth-ranked Iowa State freshman Jon Reader. Kerr dropped a decision against Reader last season in the championship match of the Glen Brand Open, but Kerr defeated Reader in a freestyle meeting later in the spring at the FILA Junior freestyle championships in Las Vegas.

This may be a good thing for Perry given his embarassing performance in the ODU bout. Seriously, he looked like a freshman JVer trying to win a spot in the varsity line up. Why expose yourself to another amateur show.

No, I don't. But, assuming he starts, Kerr may better than you think he is. Maybe he's not a guaranteed winner, but not a guaranteed fall or major by Reader either. That said, I'm not so disappointed about Perry. I wondered which Perry was going to show up, the National Champ or the unfocused hothead from St. Eds. No one guy makes a wrestling team. I like being a fan, but I live far enough away to desire a little objectivity.

At least I won't be complaining about one of the 9,000 seats I couldn't get. It should be a huge home advantage for the Clones.

Cyclone, I was at Carver yesterday afternoon when I heard that the update was being released to the press. It has been taken to the highest levels for clarification and neither the UNI or the Dubuque Open satisfy the sitting requirement of one competition. That opinion came back yesterday afternoon. I don't know if there are any other irons in the fire but it seems we will need to accept this is it and Perry is out.

Everyone makes miistakes but realistically this problem can be shared by a few people. No one should let their emotions get so far out of control that it causes this situation. We're not talking about a freshman wrestler here. Furthermore, Perry probably should have been sat down for the NC State match just to cool off and adjust himself. The sooner wrestlers realize there are no stars on a team the better the team bonds and will work together. Perry will be alright and so will the team. For now Kerr needs to step it up and he is definately up to it.

The individual match-ups are close at most of the weights and so obviously the bonus points gained/denied (and momentum) will be crucial.

I've been a forum reader for a long time but this is my first post, albeit a 'reply'. As a Cyclone, I was glad to hear this and it does give Iowa State a bit of an edge perhaps. However, Kerr (Perry's likely replacement) defeated Reader in a previous match up.

I seem to be negative on my teams and I have the same feeling for this match. While on paper, it seems like Iowa State should win based on the current rankings, but Iowa has a history of getting amped up for this. It wouldn't be the first time they've come in with a lower rank and win.

I am nervous and anxious about this match-up even though it's in Ames!!

Rankings need to be taken lightly at this early point in the season. If you went off of last weeks rankings, Minnesota should have won 6 matches against ISU, not the other way around.

I think it stinks. Can't they appeal it so that he can wrestle this week then serve the suppension after the ISU meet. When did Kerr beat Reader?
