i guess i wasn't even referring specifically to mueller...i am talking about lesser opponents in general...lets use Rochester Duals as an example...he could be going after pins and working on his pinning combinations in these matches....hell, we outscored our opponents by 130-20 or something like that...

You are right on this and I agree that if Dustin were to move forward and initiate more attacks that he is going to get those calls and then force some of these "pretenders" from last year that gave him much closer matches then they should have to either wrestle or give up penalty points...there is not enough time in a match though to make these penalty points really hurt though unless your last name is Nagel...

I think Ness used this philosophy against Kist and it worked to his benefit...I would say that as long as Ness wrestles Kist this way every time and the ref is on top of what is happening in the match, that Ness gets this major every time and will hopefully get at least one opportunity to roll his guy over.

I agree completely, like I said Gillespie won the match on the terms that the refs allowed him to. I won't fault him for that whatsoever.

Maybe I stated this poorly in my original post, what I really meant was since he wrestled Espo, Dustin really hasn't wrestled an opponent that came out to the mat saying to themselves (about Dustin) "I'm going to get out here and just kick this guy's ass, just take the match to him. Score, and keep on scoring."

I think Caldwell and Metcalf are going to do that, and thats a big reason why I'm so excited to see Dustin lock up with them.

    #1 ISU
    #2 Gophers
    #3 Okie State
I don't see Iowa in the top 3 like some of you do. From what I have seen this season I may not even see them in the top five.

I could go through the line-up and probably give some sort of opinion on what I would like to see from some of these guys I have seen in the program the last three years. Obviously I am not a coach and the guys in the room know a lot more about their guys then I do but I think its pretty obvious that in yesterday's meet in hindsight we had a few matches where the bonus points could come from and we only got them in 1 out of 3 matches...that being said, the Gophers have said from Day 1 that their goal is a National Championship, not necessarily a National Duals Championship...in addition J. Rob has basically given his seniors permission to go after Individual Championships this year which certainly could be changing the way that they are approaching matches and practice. I don't know how this works as I have never had to prepare at the beginning of the season in order to peak at the end. My assumption is that they are working to get them in shape over time and to make sure that that the weight is coming off the right way over time so that they are not trying to pull weight at the end. I would also hope that for guys like Kish and C.P. they are going to start working on some skills that will help them against some of their top opponents this year.

I have to point a few things out here gopher, this is one of the biggest changes I've noticed in the gophers from years of old is that this year almost all of them are working for the fall. Remember that armbar move cole konrad used to pin everyone with? Well he must have showed it to a couple guys because if you go watch the rochester duals almost every one of the gophers tries it and some expierience some major success. I believe that is how cp got both of his pins and we all know cp is not known as a pinner. As for dustin not being agressive enough on top, did you watch the match against mueller? He almost turned him with an armbar, and when that didnt work he tried that kish crotch lift flip that he pinned pucillo with at B10s last year. You can tell he is really trying to open up on his feet he's taking shots and sometimes scoring, I just dont think it comes very naturally to him. I think dustin is going to have a very impressive year this year, I'm excited to see how he does against burroughs.

Pins at Rochester Duals aren't really that impressive...C.P. is going to get some matches this year as a senior that he ought to be able to walk on the mat and put a guy in trouble without a doubt.

As far as Dustin's match vs Mueller was concerned, you are right that I didnt' see it and that you have said that he was working that armbar and attempting some aggressive moves makes me feel better about the match.

My point is this: if in Natty Duals if we lock up against ISU or Okie State and Dustin is almost a gimme for a decision then what is the difference between a 1-0 match and a 9-2 match...if he can't open up on a guy in those matches but knows that he has a three point lead then he ought to be working the turn like a man possessed at that point. That's all.

Dustins "go to" shot is a duck, which means the other guy has to be exerting some forward pressure, its not so easy for him to score on a guy whos content to not get majored. I should think the difference between a 1-0 match and a 9-2 match is pretty obvious... one is domination and the other is not, if dustins winning 9-2 he can afford to get sloppy and give up a takedown. Against mueller dustin actually would have gotten the major with his takedown at the buzzer except he cut mueller in the 2nd period to try and work some more offense.
