I don't know if I agree that Northwestern will be weak at the upper weights over the next couple of years. They won't be as tough as having Herbert, Tamillow, and Fox... but Benefiel, Herbert, Schoen and Kuhar are pretty solid. Then add in Welch at 165, Roddy at 174, Benefiel at 184, Schoen at 197 and Kuhar at 285 the year after that and it still looks pretty decent. Don't you think?

Winning breeds winning, and the 4th place finish this past year will help NU bring in more top notch recruits. Will the admissions standards be a problem? Of course they will. But Northwestern made themselves a player nationally last season, and I don't see them leaving the national scene any time soon.

you are correct...i guess 141, 149, 157 would be our achilles heel. a couple of those young guys should end up being all americans but they huge shoes to fill.

I agree with you. They landed Benefiel, Welch, and Roddy as blue-chippers the last couple of years. Add in some good quality guys like Battaglia, Kuhar, Kellogg etc. and things are heading in the right direction.

Now if they can get a couple of blue-chippers at the lower middle weights, like "NUwildcats" suggests, they would be set.

admissions is not as much problem in nonrevenue sports. top athletes in nonrevenue sports usually have the work ethic to excel in the classroom, not to mention the fact that they value their degree because there are no million dollar contracts waiting for them in a professional league.

If NU could stay in the top 5 for a few seasons, the academics will actually become an asset. Who in their right mind will go to Iowa when the can come to NU, compete for a top program and get a NU degree. no offense to the children of the corn.

welch, roddy and galka were excellent students in high school. they all add acceptances to stanford, galka also got into cornell and columbia.

NU's success will be more cyclical because we will never be strong from top to bottom.
You're not the only program with these issues. At Harvard there's no athletic scholarships and no redshirts, and the costs make NU look like Michigan (for out-of-staters.) It's probably the same for Cornell and Penn, too. But these programs do an amazing job of attracting blue-chip talent that can pass their rigorous admissions processes.

When I read this yesterday and looked at the box score, Two things came to mind.

    1) This isn't news...NW gave up two forefits and NIU still barley beat them.

    2) I don't even want to go over to the illinoismatmen.com boards to read about this.

Number 1 pretty much speaks for itself. Good win NIU, anytime you beat a highly ranked team that speaks well for your program, but come on....you gave a match away to NDSU. seriously...come on! Also Hayes didn't really blow it, I'll say this much...Duke Burke is the real deal. without seeing it, I'm certain that it was a spectacular match.

Number 2, with all due respect to the fans of hometown/state teams...they tend to get a bit overzealous there about NIU. I don't post there, but I read there a lot without seeing it I can only imagine what kind of "I told you so's" are being thrown about.

I think NW being ranked 4 or 5 is fine for tournaments, but in no way should they be that high for dual meets. but thats why they wrestle...good job to NIU, but take it for what its worth.

Thanks for the link, I tried to link them from here but my post count was not high enough...I swear I have posted at least 5 times here.

DH - let me know if its a problem posting here. I do see you guys are selling stuff here too so that might be the problem. Shoot me an email...
