Nick Hayes blew it, with a weakened lineup i am sure the coaches were counting on him. I am not sure why he is rated to highly, but he has severly underperformed throughout his time at NU.

it looks like NU will not feature a regular lineup till after the midlands. there are too many holes, but we also have some capable freshmen. i have a feeling the coaches will use the midlands to decide who should be redshirted and who should wrestle.

it goes without saying though that their team will have seeding issues at National Duals...

knowing that Tamillow, Fox and Lang were out makes me feel a little bit indifferent about the results but I still don't know how you don't have better back-ups at that program. Does that expose some possible depth issues?

There has always been depth issues at Northwestern. They have 23 kids on their roster and that includes red-shirts. It isn't like they have been at the top year after year and have kids beating down the door to go there. They are just starting to get to the top.

off course we have no depth. We have 3 wrestles in our recruiting class while most top programs bring in 6 -8 wrestlers. plus its alot easier for a wrestler to take is chance at walking on at a state school than at NU at a cost of $40,000+. it will be impossible for NU to reload year after year like minnesota. NU's success will be more cyclical because we will never be strong from top to bottom.

we were weak at the middle weights last year, and we will still be weak there this year because our best wrestlers at those weights are freshmen. but the next two to three years those would be our strongest weight class while we get weaker at the heavier weights. ideally, we should probably redshirt our freshmen to get them experience while retaining their eligibility but thats not really an option when you have no depth whatsoever.

125 precin...solid wrestler, will be competitive against anyone
133 sulzer/metzler...neither of these guys would win in the big10
141 lang...should be in the mix to win it all again
149 gould/colletti/smith...in all honesty we might as well forfiet at this weight
    157 bertin/kellog(Freshmen)...average
165 battaglia(freshmen)/kellogg (freshmen)...these guys would be good but probably not right away
    174 Hayes/battaglia (freshmen)...hayes is overrated
184 Benefiel (freshmen)/kolovic...benefiel is going to be great some day, probably not this year.
197 tamillow/Schoen (freshmen)...tamillow should come close to winning it all
    hwt Fox...all american

its good to have someone on this forum that knows NU well...i hadn't considered the issue with walk-ons but that certainly makes sense...

had herbert not taken his olympic redshirt this year I think Northwestern would have had the points to be Top Five and Possibly Top 3...

    You could easily argue:
    Lang #1 or #2
    184 Herbert #1
    197 Tamillow #1-#5
    Hwt Fox #1-#5

That is four potential champs (not likely) but for sure four high ranking AA's.

Exactly, but it sure is fun when they do well.

yea...while i am very happy for Jake for getting the olympic redshirt, a part of me wish we had it in the lineup. i think with him in the lineup we could easily be looking at the best year for NU wrestling.

well, if its any consolation, you can be damn proud of herbert if he gets his chance in the olympics and if not, he will return and win you a national championship again at 184 in 2009...
